Moral Dilemmas And Cases Of Conscience : Trollope's Morality In The Warden And The Last Chronicle Of Barset, Hannah Louise Rogers Jan 1999

Moral Dilemmas And Cases Of Conscience : Trollope's Morality In The Warden And The Last Chronicle Of Barset, Hannah Louise Rogers

Theses : Honours

This thesis offers an exploration of Trollope's morality in The Warden and The Last Chronicle of Barset. Existing critical work which explores Trollope's morality often argues either for or against Trollope's moral relativism. This thesis argues, instead, that Trollope's morality unifies aspects of both theoretical perspectives. It reconciles the polarisation of Trollope's moral absolutism and moral relativism, taking the middle-ground. In doing so, it makes evident the contradictions and extremes in existing Trollopian criticism.

The thesis places Trollopian morality within the historical and socio-cultural context of Victorianism. It focuses on the Victorian consciousness of change, securing a definition …

Bicultural Involvement And Psychological Well-Being In Second Generation Chinese Migrants In Australia, Denise A. Kensit Jan 1999

Bicultural Involvement And Psychological Well-Being In Second Generation Chinese Migrants In Australia, Denise A. Kensit

Theses : Honours

The present study, a replication of Szapocnik, Kurtines and Fernandez's (1980) study, measured the relationship between bicultural involvement and psychological wellbeing for second generation (i.e. born in Australia) Chinese migrants in Perth, Western Australia. Ninety volunteers participated in the study. They were all Australian citizens, over l 8 years of age, and spoke English. Two studies were conducted. Firstly, four volunteers participated in semi-structured interviews to provide a context to data yielded from the quantitative study. Secondly, eighty-six second generation migrants (i.e. born in Australia) completed a questionnaire that included the Bicultural Involvement Questionnaire (B1Q) and the General Health Questionnaire, …

Transforming The Mediasphere : Sweden, A Case Study Of Conflicting Discourses In Socialist And Capitalist Broadcasting Values, Kent Ingemar Svensson Jan 1999

Transforming The Mediasphere : Sweden, A Case Study Of Conflicting Discourses In Socialist And Capitalist Broadcasting Values, Kent Ingemar Svensson

Theses : Honours

Sweden has undergone major changes in its mediasphere during the last twelve years, during which two oppositional forces have been particularly at work, capitalist and socialist. Goth those forces have influenced the direction in which the national mediasphere is transforming. The challenges of these political discourses, and responses from the parties involved regarding the role of the media in society, has been increasingly visible since the late 1950s, when the public service monopoly was first called into question. The Swedish socialist government has promoted and protected its non - commercial public service monopoly, through which they could mould national identity …

Smoking : An Exploration Of Message Framing And Death Anxiety, Ian James Parker Jan 1999

Smoking : An Exploration Of Message Framing And Death Anxiety, Ian James Parker

Theses : Honours

The focus of this thesis is the replication and extension of research by Tversky and Kahneman (1981) who found that how a message is worded or framed can significantly affect decisional choice. Tversky and Kahneman (1981) demonstrated that a message framed in terms of "lives saved" was favoured over one which read "lives lost" notwithstanding that the net sum of survivors was equal in both instances. The authors referred to the effects of message framing on decision making as Prospect Theory. This thesis studied Tversky and Kahneman's (1981) research applied to the issue of smoking. The preference for a positive …

The Evolving Practice Of Medicine: A View From The Front Line, Robert M. Corwin, Thomas H. Dennison, Patricia B. Franklin, Paul B. Ginsburg Jan 1999

The Evolving Practice Of Medicine: A View From The Front Line, Robert M. Corwin, Thomas H. Dennison, Patricia B. Franklin, Paul B. Ginsburg

Center for Policy Research

The health care system in the United States has been experiencing rapid change for decades. Beginning after World War II, the health care system grew and expanded. Change was driven by advances in technology, shifting demographics, and increases in the supply of physicians and hospitals, all fueled by supportive public policy and governmental funding. While change continues today, new dynamics drive the direction of change. These new dynamics generally share a common theme of cost containment. The purchasing power of buyers, both industry and government, has overshadowed the historical power of providers. Managed care financing mechanisms have changed provider behavior …

Helping The Working Poor: Employer- Vs. Employee-Based Subsidies, Stacy Dickert-Conlin, Douglas Holtz-Eakin Jan 1999

Helping The Working Poor: Employer- Vs. Employee-Based Subsidies, Stacy Dickert-Conlin, Douglas Holtz-Eakin

Center for Policy Research

In the United States and Europe there has been renewed interest in subsidizing firms that employ disadvantaged workers as a means of addressing poverty and other social problems. In contrast, the prevailing practice is largely to provide social welfare benefits directly to individuals. Which approach is better? We re-examine the relative merits of employee- versus employer-based labor market subsidies and conclude there are good reasons to continue to rely on the direct, employee-based approach. In practice, low-wage workers are seldom either low-skill or low-income workers. Furthermore, workers who might quality for a firm-based subsidy are reluctant to so identify themselves …

Cash Constraints And Business Start-Ups: Deutschmarks Versus Dollars, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Harvey Rosen Jan 1999

Cash Constraints And Business Start-Ups: Deutschmarks Versus Dollars, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Harvey Rosen

Center for Policy Research

In this paper we analyze microdata to explore differences in the rates at which American and German workers leave their salaried jobs to become self-employed. We document that the rate of self-employment is lower in Germany than in the U.S., and the rate of transition from wage-earning to self-employment is lower as well. We find evidence that German workers face liquidity constraints that are more severe than those of their American counterparts. Further, the difference in transition rates cannot be attributed to observable differences between German and American workers.

Estate Taxes, Life Insurance, And Small Business, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, John Phillips, Harvey Rosen Jan 1999

Estate Taxes, Life Insurance, And Small Business, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, John Phillips, Harvey Rosen

Center for Policy Research

One criticism of the estate tax is that it prevents the owners of family businesses from passing their enterprises onto their children. The problem is that it may be difficult to pay estate taxes without liquidating the business. A natural question is why individuals with such concerns do not purchase enough life insurance to meet their estate tax liabilities. This paper examines whether and how people use life insurance to deal with the estate tax. We find that, other things being the same, business owners purchase more life insurance than other individuals. However, on the margin, their insurance purchases are …

Personal Ontologies, Michael N. Huhns, Larry M. Stevens

Faculty Publications

Corporations can suffer from too much information, and it is often inaccessible, inconsistent, and incomprehensible. The corporate solution entails knowledge management techniques and data warehouses. The paper discusses the use of the personal ontology. The promising approach is an organization scheme based on a model of an office and its information, an ontology, coupled with the proper tools for using it.

Emotion Processing In Alzheimer's Disease: The Clinical Implications, Shirley Ann Radford Jan 1999

Emotion Processing In Alzheimer's Disease: The Clinical Implications, Shirley Ann Radford

School of Psychology Theses

The purpose of this study is to extend the literature on recognition and identification of non-verbal communicative signals of emotion in those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. To date, there have been few studies in this area, yet emotion processing deficits may have an important effect on the quality of life of Alzheimer's patients and their families. The experimental condition consisted of a set of tasks involving face and prosody discrimination problems in which participants were asked to choose between a number of stimuli presented on cards (facial cues) or on audio-tape (prosody cues). In addition, a measure of general cognitive …

An Exploratory Study Of Coping, Psychological Distress, Self-Esteem And Perceived Stress In Patients With Chronic Bowel Disorders, Georgina Cratchley Jan 1999

An Exploratory Study Of Coping, Psychological Distress, Self-Esteem And Perceived Stress In Patients With Chronic Bowel Disorders, Georgina Cratchley

School of Psychology Theses

This study had 4 aims. The first aim was to explore the relationships between personal control and coping responses in patients with the chronic bowel disorders of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The second aim examined coping in IBS and IBD patients as a process, by focusing on a specific episode of their primary symptoms. The coping profiles of the IBS and IBD patients were compared to establish whether differences in coping between the 2 groups were present. The third aim examined differences between groups and tested for linear trends across IBS, IBD patients and Non-patient …

Feedlot Marketing/Sorting Systems To Reduce Carcass Discounts, Rob Cooper, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Dillon Feuz Jan 1999

Feedlot Marketing/Sorting Systems To Reduce Carcass Discounts, Rob Cooper, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Dillon Feuz

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A project involving 4,348 cattle and five commercial feedlots in Nebraska was conducted to evaluate marketing/ sorting systems to reduce overweight and overfat carcasses . At reimplant time, cattle were weighed and fat depth estimated either by ultrasound or by manual rib palpation. Cattle heavier and/or fatter than a predetermined weight and fat depth were identified for early sale. The system of sorting did not reduce carcass discounts. Reimplant fat depth was poorly correlated to carcass fat depth. At reimplant time (~90 days prior to slaughter), we were unable to consistently identify cattle which would become Yield Grade 4 carcasses.

Steer Performance Within Summer Grazing Systems, D. J. Jordon, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Todd Milton, Rob Cooper

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A growing/finishing trial in 1996-97 evaluated summer grazing systems and subsequent finishing performance. Steers were wintered on cornstalks and assigned to one of three summer grazing systems: 1) Sequential removal of cattle from bromegrass, 2) Bromegrass/warm season grass, or 3) Sandhills range. Steers on the sequential bromegrass treatment gained fastest in the summer, but had a higher slaughter breakeven. Sequential bromegrass, steers were on grass where cost of grain was fixed, for fewer days; therefore, breakeven was increased. Steers on the bromegrass/ warm-season treatment had the lowest slaughter breakevens due to more total weight gain on forage. Slaughter breakevens were …

Women In The New Millennium: The Promises Of The Past Are Now The Problems For The Millennium, Lundy R. Langston Jan 1999

Women In The New Millennium: The Promises Of The Past Are Now The Problems For The Millennium, Lundy R. Langston

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the equality principle, while intended to promote gender equality, has failed to address the unique challenges and needs of women, particularly in legal and workplace contexts. Despite advancements in women's rights, structural disparities persist, with women bearing disproportionate burdens in caregiving, employment, and legal proceedings. The analysis critiques how courts and policies often ignore the biological and societal differences between men and women, leading to outcomes that perpetuate gender inequality. The article emphasizes the need for a more nuanced approach to equality that accounts for these differences and addresses systemic power imbalances.

The Ties That Bind, Melissa F. Savage Jan 1999

The Ties That Bind, Melissa F. Savage

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the evolving legal recognition of foster parents' rights, particularly focusing on the constitutional protections afforded to long-term foster parents under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. It highlights the significance of the Rodriguez v. McLoughlin case, which established that foster parents who have formed strong emotional bonds with a child and are in the process of adoption may have a constitutionally protected liberty interest in their relationship. The analysis emphasizes the tension between the contractual nature of foster care and the emotional ties that develop, advocating for due process protections for long-term foster parents while …

Increased Solar Ultra Violet Radiation And Possible Links To Health Effects In Nunavut, Shaun Greig Carson Jan 1999

Increased Solar Ultra Violet Radiation And Possible Links To Health Effects In Nunavut, Shaun Greig Carson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Ultra violet radiation (UVR) is believed to be linked to many health problems, and numerous studies have been conducted on Caucasian populations at all latitudes. Nunavut, in the Canadian Arctic, comprises approximately one fifth of Canada's land mass and has a scattered population, the majority of which (over 70%) is Inuit. Nunavut also possesses a unique physical geography, as well as culture, which may result in its population being at great risk from UVR Very little research has been conducted in Nunavut on the affects of increased solar UVR and possible links to health. This thesis has compiled baseline data …

An Examination Of The Creation And Impact Of A Supported Housing Program For Psychiatric Consumer/Survivors, Shannon Parkinson Jan 1999

An Examination Of The Creation And Impact Of A Supported Housing Program For Psychiatric Consumer/Survivors, Shannon Parkinson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Supported housing has existed for approximately a decade, but knowledge on the implementation of the approach and the impacts on consumer/survivors is scarce. The current qualitative study described a supported housing program in Winnipeg, Manitoba and determined a fit with the definition of supported housing developed by Parkinson, Nelson, and Horgan (1999). Information was presented regarding the implementation process of this program, including review of the program operations, implementation of the shift, remedying difficulties, and maintaining practice within the values of the community integration/empowerment paradigm As well, three individuals shared personal stories of their involvement in the program and the …

Substrate And Enzyme Profile Of Fast And Slow Skeletal Muscle Fibers In Rhesus Monkeys, Varvara P. Grichko, Gwen J. Gettelman, Jeffrey Widrick, Robert H. Fitts Jan 1999

Substrate And Enzyme Profile Of Fast And Slow Skeletal Muscle Fibers In Rhesus Monkeys, Varvara P. Grichko, Gwen J. Gettelman, Jeffrey Widrick, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Results from the Russian Cosmos program suggest that the rhesus monkey is an excellent model for studying weightlessness-induced changes in muscle function. Consequently, the purpose of this investigation was to establish the resting levels of selected substrate and enzymes in individual slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibers of the rhesus monkey. A second objective was to determine the effect of an 18-day sit in the Spacelab experiment-support primate facility [Experimental System for the Orbiting Primate (ESOP)]. Muscle biopsies of the soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles were obtained 1 mo before and immediately after an 18-day ESOP sit. The biopsies were freeze-dried, …
