Alcohol Education For Elementary School Children, Pam R. Stamper

Graduate Research Papers

In 1992, close to 90% of high school seniors reported past experience with alcohol, while 50% stated use in the last month and 3% reported daily use of alcohol (Adger & Werner, 1994). According to a report in 1993, 78% of high school seniors had used alcohol in the past year and one-third stated that they drank heavily (Feaster, 1996). The average age of children first using alcohol, outside of the family or religious functions, was twelve years (Bosworth & Cueto, 1994; Feaster, 1996; Mason & Hodge, 1995). National data showed that adolescents and preadolescents used alcohol at age eleven …

Bibliotherapy : Background, Application And Research, Carla Marie Eich

Graduate Research Papers

This paper examines bibliotherapy in several aspects. Bibliotherapy is using books to help with client's problems or for developmental adjustment and growth. Bibliotherapy has a long history, dating back to early man. However, it was not until this century that scholars began studying it further. In 1949, the process of bibliotherapy was developed which is discussed in this paper. Research support for bibliotherapy has been mixed and speculation as to why is also discussed. There are many limitations of bibliotherapy which are important to consider if a therapist is interested in bibliotherapy. This paper allows the critics of bibliotherapy to …

Treatment Strategies Used To Teach Adults Diagnosed With Mental Retardation Appropriate Interpersonal Skills, Laurie S. Youngblood

Graduate Research Papers

Currently, the care of individuals diagnosed with mental retardation is moving toward meeting their needs in the least restrictive environment. Mildly retarded individuals are being guided away from the custodial care of institutions to normalized apartment settings. This integration into the mainstream of society, which allows the retarded individuals to lead as normal a life as possible, is the goal of normalization process. An expected outcome of community living is that these individuals will have increased opportunities to meet people and develop relationships. Living and working in a more free environment is a great challenge for the individual with mental …

Evolving Views Of Civil Litigation: Future Civil Procedure Courses, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 1999

Evolving Views Of Civil Litigation: Future Civil Procedure Courses, Jeffrey A. Parness

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

There is reason to think that Professors McManamon, Resnik and Eskridge might each welcome an independent civil procedure course chiefly focused on civil claim settlements. Professor McManamon wonders whether alternative dispute resolution processes are as "easy to grasp" as some have opined. She counsels that we should not fear creativity and "that we should not be afraid to question our Lengdellian universe." In conclusion, Professor McManamon urges civil procedure teachers to "communicate... to our students" the dramatic changes in civil litigation over the years in ways that make "the most sense." While expressing and urging us to maintain continuing faith …

The Substantive Elements In The New Special Pleading Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness, Amy Leonetti, Austin Bartlett Jan 1999

The Substantive Elements In The New Special Pleading Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness, Amy Leonetti, Austin Bartlett

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Recently there have emerged new special pleading standards applicable to discrete substantive law claims or to certain remedial requests. These norms often raise troubling procedure/substance questions in separation of powers and choice of law settings. The questions are especially difficult where the standards are hard to locate; to distinguish from nonpleading laws; and to differentiate by rationale(s). In the separation of powers setting, these questions must be approached only after undertaking a distinct and detailed analysis of each relevant government's allocation of lawmaking duties. American governments differ significantly in these allocations. In the choice of law setting, these questions can …

The Relationship Between Perceived Job Pressure And Self-Reported Bulimia Symptoms Among Female Las Vegas Production Show Dancers, Ann Blyth Bullis Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Perceived Job Pressure And Self-Reported Bulimia Symptoms Among Female Las Vegas Production Show Dancers, Ann Blyth Bullis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between weight oriented job pressure and bulimic symptomatology among female Las Vegas production show dancers. Surveys were distributed to approximately 100 dancers at the professional level in the Las Vegas area at the professional dance and Pilates studios as well as backstage at two of the shows. The surveys measured perceived weight oriented job pressure, body dissatisfaction in response to weight oriented job pressure, and differences in self-reported attribution between symptomatic bulimic and non-bulimic dancers. This study may provide evidence for the need to implement prevention measures for this at-risk …

The Role Of Qualifying Language On Consumer Perceptions Of Environmental Claims, Thomas J. Maronick, J. Craig Andrews Jan 1999

The Role Of Qualifying Language On Consumer Perceptions Of Environmental Claims, Thomas J. Maronick, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

A copy-test of seven environmental claims on aerosol packages shows that consumers interpret general, unqualified claims (e.g., environmentally friendly or ozone friendly) as meaning the product is safe for the environment in both an absolute (safe) and a relative (safer) sense. These perceptions of environmental safety are enhanced by specific qualifiers for general claims such as No CFCs and general qualifiers for specific claims. In addition, the results show that almost all specific environmental claims improve consumers’ perceptions of the aerosol product relative to general claims for environmental benefits of the product. Implications for marketing and public policy professionals are …

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap Jan 1999

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter will identify and examine some of the major legal issues raised by the development and proliferation of technologies involved in assisted reproduction. It will review the application of existing legal principles, statutes and common law rules to these issues, and will illustrate the uncertainty present in the current legal regime in Canada. The chapter will then evaluate the need for a unified regulatory framework for reproductive technologies ("RTs").' While the focus of the chapter is an identification and review of the legal issues, it should be understood that these are shaped in a moral, ethical and social context.

Legal Forms, Family Forms, Gender Norms: What Is A Spouse?, Shelley A. M. Gavigan Jan 1999

Legal Forms, Family Forms, Gender Norms: What Is A Spouse?, Shelley A. M. Gavigan

Articles & Book Chapters

The limits of the normative nature of law may be illustrated in the current English Canadian context by apparently contradictory phenomena: Legal defeats of welfare mothers (e.g. Masse and Falkiner), and the legal victories of lesbian mothers (Re K). Drawing upon Fine, this paper employs the analytic frame of form and content to analyse contradictions within the legal form, notably in respect of the definition of spouse and the regulation of relations of property and poverty, and the struggles of lesbian parents who have applied to the courts to formalize their relationships to their children by way of adoption, and …

A Two-Dimensional Analytic Tidal Model For A Narrow Estuary Of Arbitrary Lateral Depth Variation: The Intratidal Motion, Chunyan Li, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson Jan 1999

A Two-Dimensional Analytic Tidal Model For A Narrow Estuary Of Arbitrary Lateral Depth Variation: The Intratidal Motion, Chunyan Li, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson

CCPO Publications

An innovative method is introduced to solve a two-dimensional, depth-averaged analytic model for narrow estuaries or tidal channels with arbitrary lateral depth variations. The solution is valid if the lateral variation of the amplitude of tidal elevation (\Delta a\) is small, i.e., \Delta a\ much less than a, where a is the amplitude of the tidal elevation. This assumption is supported by a 60-day observation of elevation in the James River Estuary using pressure sensors at both sides of a cross section of the estuary. The error introduced by the solution is of the order of \Delta a\/a, which has …

A New Interdisciplinary Mathematics And Science Course, P. E. Mcneil Jan 1999

A New Interdisciplinary Mathematics And Science Course, P. E. Mcneil

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

As Norfolk State University has been considering how to adequately prepare students to teach the challenging new mathematics and science called for the Virginia Standards of Learning [1], we have reached the conclusion that the student programs need to provide interdisciplinary experiences linking mathematics and science. We reached the conclusion for two reasons. First, even with the larger number of courses called for in the new licensure regulations, there are not enough course hours available to teach all of the different mathematics and science topics that future teachers need to have studied. Second, elementary and middle school students do not …

Higher Education's Greatest Current Opportunity And Responsibility, R. F. Watson Jan 1999

Higher Education's Greatest Current Opportunity And Responsibility, R. F. Watson

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Preparing the next generation of teachers at all levels from kindergarten through college is higher education’s greatest current opportunity. Getting it right may be our greatest challenge. The face of science and technology is by definition changing constantly. Today, many feel that the most important work in science is going on increasingly at and across the interfaces of the traditional discipline. To serve our society well, education in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, and technology must change accordingly. In my view, curricula at all levels (K-16) too often continue to reflect only the narrow traditional disciplinary approaches that science has taken …

Statutes With Four Legs To Stand On? An Examination Of "Cruelty To Police Dog" Laws, Craig Ian Scheiner Jan 1999

Statutes With Four Legs To Stand On? An Examination Of "Cruelty To Police Dog" Laws, Craig Ian Scheiner

Animal Law Review

Since 1978, forty states and one United States territory have passed laws to protect police dogs. Despite the numerous peculiarities contained in these laws, as well as the legal issues raised by them, none of the laws have been reviewed in academic literature. Although the courts have had little occasion to analyze the vast breadth of issues surrounding the police dog laws, there is much to be said about the components of the various statutes. This article examines the statutory requirements and prescribed penalties relating to police dog statutes and opens debate on the prudence and value of such laws. …
