Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers Jan 1999

Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Richmond Mine of the Iron Mountain copper deposit contains some of the most acid mine waters ever reported. Values of pH have been measured as low as -3.6, combined metal concentrations as high as 200 g/liter, and sulfate concentrations as high as 760 g/liter. Copious quantities of soluble metal sulfate salts such as melanterite, chalcanthite, coquimbite, rhomboclase, voltaite, copiapite, and halotrichite have been identified, and some of these are forming from negative-pH mine waters. Geochemical calculations show that, under a mine-plugging remediation scenario, these salts would dissolve and the resultant 600,000-m3 mine pool would have a pH of …

The Search For Unrecognized Pathogens, David A. Relman Jan 1999

The Search For Unrecognized Pathogens, David A. Relman

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

The distribution and diversity of microorganisms in the world are far greater than have been previously appreciated. Molecular, cultivation independent methods have played a key role in this insight. To what extent do humans remain ignorant of microbial diversity within the human body and the settings in which microorganisms cause human disease? In addition to implicating microbial agents in nontraditional infectious diseases, the use of methods such as broad-range polymerase chain reaction, representational difference analysis, expression library screening, and host gene expression profiling may force a reassessment of the concepts of microbial disease causation.

Feasibility Of Growing And Feeding High Oil Corn To Pigs, Larry L. Bitney, Duane Reese, Robert Caldwell Jan 1999

Feasibility Of Growing And Feeding High Oil Corn To Pigs, Larry L. Bitney, Duane Reese, Robert Caldwell

Nebraska Swine Reports

A feasibility analysis on the growing and feeding of high-oil corn (HOC) to pigs was conducted. The cost to produce HOC is about 25 to 32 cents per bushel higher than for normal corn (NC), primarily due to 7 to 10 percent yield reduction for HOC. Diets made with HOC contain between 1.5 and 3 percent additional fat. Therefore, feed efficiency should be improved, on average, by 3 to 6 percent when HOC is substituted for NC. In most cases, daily gain should improve by 0 to 3 percent with HOC in the diet. High-oil corn grown in central Nebraska …

A Population Approach To Diagnosis Of Grow-Finish Diarrhea Complex, Gerald E. Duhamel, Michelle R. Mathiesen Jan 1999

A Population Approach To Diagnosis Of Grow-Finish Diarrhea Complex, Gerald E. Duhamel, Michelle R. Mathiesen

Nebraska Swine Reports

Because the growing-finishing phase of pig production accounts for 60 to 70 percent of the total feed costs, improvements in feed efficiency during that period can significantly effect cost-benefit potential. Alimentary tract diseases caused by bacterial agents can significantly impact the capacity of growing-finishing pigs to utilize nutrients. Although disease problems in the poultry industry are most often diagnosed by complete examination of several live animals submitted for necropsy, such an approach is cost prohibitive for growing-finishing pigs. To better control enteric bacterial diseases of growing/finishing pigs, we investigated the value of examining fecal specimens taken front a representative number …

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador Jan 1999

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Deslanting the Lens examines the historical and sociological implications of how Asian men have been represented in popular American film. From the early days of “yellowface” to caricatures like Long Duck Dong, Asian men have been relegated to perpetual foreigner status in American cinema. This paper will explore why the portrayal of Asian men has been limited to very specific ideas about Asian and Asian Americans are in society. This analysis will also include how socio/political events have shaped and influence popular perceptions about Asians, that inform how Asian men continue to be depicted in film.

Clear And Present Danger: Enforcing The International Ban On Biological And Chemical Weapons Through Sanctions, Use Of Force, And Criminalization, Michael P. Scharf Jan 1999

Clear And Present Danger: Enforcing The International Ban On Biological And Chemical Weapons Through Sanctions, Use Of Force, And Criminalization, Michael P. Scharf

Faculty Publications

Currently there are two means of enforcing the international prohibition of chemical and biological weapons. First, the international community can induce compliance through imposition of sanctions, such as trade embargoes, freezing of assets and diplomatic isolation. Second, when sanctions fail, States can individually or collectively respond to the threat of chemical or biological weapons by using military force. After exploring the potential strengths and weaknesses of these approaches, this article examines the desirability of supplementing them with a third approach based on the criminal prosecution of persons responsible for the production, stockpiling, transfer, or use of chemical and biological weapons.

Self-Study for North Central Association accreditation

This document has been developed as a part of the planning processes ongoing within the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) community and the University of Missouri (UM) System In 1993, the four-campus UM System conducted a significant planning effort under the aegis of the University’s Board of Curators focusing on program review, which involved a detailed setting of academic priorities Within the past two years, the four- campus system has, based on inclusive planning, established priorities for additional support from the State of Missouri under a "mission enhancement" effort Further, the UMR campus has a well-developed annual planning cycle which produces …
