The Effect Of A Student Orientation Program Upon Transfer Student Retention, And An Investigation Into The Causation Of And Potential Remedies For Transfer Student Attrition, Rebecca Norton Helm

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the effect of orientation upon the retention of transfer students at a metropolitan university in the mid-south. The study was longitudinal in nature and utilized both a chi-square test to evaluate the difference in retention between transfer students who did and did not attend a new student orientation program, and a logistic regression to control for the effects of other well known influences of retention. The predictive model developed accurately identified 81.69% of persisters and nonpersisters. New student orientation, age, previous college GPA, and declaring a major were found to be significant predictors of retention; however …

The Forgotten Ones: Maternal Abusers And Their Victims: A Pilot Study, Shane A. Dunphy Jan 1999

The Forgotten Ones: Maternal Abusers And Their Victims: A Pilot Study, Shane A. Dunphy

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper analyses the phenomenon of mothers who sexually abuse their children, most specifically their sons. It defines the term Maternal Abuse, offers a review of the contemporary academic discourse on female sexual abusers, and presents a quantitative study of maternal abuse in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which appears to show that the existing statistics from Health Board and ISPCC reports (SEHB Section 8 Report, 1997; ISPCC National Report, 1997) significantly underestimate it's prevelence. It concludes by suggesting that though Ireland is considerably more aware of the phenomenon of sexual abuse than in the past, but that …

Mirrored Silence: Reflections On Judicial Complicity In Private Violence, Zanita E. Fenton

Articles

Tracy and John had been married for seven years. They were so in love when they met at college. He brought her flowers and wanted to spend all of his free time with her. Everything was perfect. But it seemed to become increasingly tumultuous as soon as they got married, two years later. He didn't just want to spend all of his time with her; he had to know what she was doing every waking moment of the day. He had to approve of her activities and her friends. He called her at work every day. If she wasn't at …

Will The Bang Mean Big Changes To Japanese Financial Laws, Jessica C. Wiley Jan 1999

Will The Bang Mean Big Changes To Japanese Financial Laws, Jessica C. Wiley

UC Law SF International Law Review

In response to both domestic and international pressure, the Japanese government began a series of reforms designed to deregulate their financial market in 1998. The reform plan is modeled after the British and U.S. deregulation measures often-termed "Big Bang" reforms. The essence of Japan's Big Bang is the end of highly segmented financial markets in favor of a single market where domestic and foreign banks, securities houses, insurance companies and other financial institutions will be free to compete in each other's business specialties.

The recent amendments to the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Law are an example of Japanese Big …

Sweating The International Garment Industy: A Critique Of The Presidential Task Force's Workplace Codes Of Conduct And Monitoring System, Heidi S. Bloomfield Jan 1999

Sweating The International Garment Industy: A Critique Of The Presidential Task Force's Workplace Codes Of Conduct And Monitoring System, Heidi S. Bloomfield

UC Law SF International Law Review

Like employers in the United States, employers in Japan seek to prevent their former employees from competing with them by using noncompete covenants. As Japan's work force and employment system become more diverse, individualized and laterally mobile, noncompete provisions are appearing before the Japanese courts with increasing frequency.

The Japanese courts' approach to noncompete clauses is to scrutinize their "reasonableness" by balancing the competing interests of the employer in protecting its business goals and the employee in preserving his right to freedom of occupation. However, the notion of "reasonableness" has been elusive, causing the Japanese courts to struggle with application …

Entrepreneurs And Entrepreneurial Development In State-Owned Enterprises Reform In China: Problems And Corruption, Baiwei Fu Jan 1999

Entrepreneurs And Entrepreneurial Development In State-Owned Enterprises Reform In China: Problems And Corruption, Baiwei Fu

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The report focuses on microeconomic reform in China, especially on entrepreneur problems and corruption in State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). China has about 145,000 SOEs employing 113 million people. State enterprises account for 70 percent of fixed assets but only 34 percent of industrial output. The total state enterprise debt is greater than China’s bank deposit base. In some cases, SOEs are unable to afford to pay worker salaries or make pension payments. Reforms caused large-scale lay-offs and plant closures in recent years.

Entrepreneurs’ corruption contributes negative effects to SOE reform. Corruption is one way of getting around political control and poor …

Aggravating The Immigration Paradox: The Nicaraguan Adjustment And Central American Relief Act's Effect On U.S. Immigration Policy, Annette C. Escobar

St. Thomas Law Review

Part I of this Comment analyzes United States immigration policy in 1996 as differentiated from the change marked by NACARA. Part II briefly explains the Supreme Court's previous holdings on immigration issues and its interpretation of immigration law. The author concludes that the Court should hold that immigration law must comport with the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution, both due process and equal protection. Part III demonstrates Congress' motivation in passing NACARA as well as the Act's general provisions. Part IV analyzes the effects and implications of NACARA. Specifically, it explains the Act's innate discriminatory tendencies, …

A Preliminary Analysis Of The Supply And Demand For Middle School Mathematics And Science Teachers In Virginia, J. A. Sigler Jan 1999

A Preliminary Analysis Of The Supply And Demand For Middle School Mathematics And Science Teachers In Virginia, J. A. Sigler

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Virginia Colleges and Universities have a major challenge to produce educated elementary and middle school students. The magnitude of this challenge can be measured by studying the number of current teachers in each grade in Virginia and the anticipated retirements and departures from the profession for other reasons. The new licensure requirements have their biggest impact for the preparation of middle school teachers since middle school teachers will no longer be able to receive general middle school certification.
