Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Tumor imaging with myocardial perfusion agents has been a focal point for researchers. A kinetic study with 99m Technetium- methoxyisobutylisonitrile ( 99m Tc-MIBI) was performed to evaluate the tumor uptake of this radiopharmaceutical in lung cancer. Thirty-five patients with lung cancer were studied. In 21 (60%) patients, there were regions of high uptake of 99m Tc-MIBI in the lesions. Heart/tumor (H/T), heart/lung (H/L) and tumor/lung (T/L) ratios were obtained. H/T and H/L ratios were 1.66±0.22 and 2.10±0.28 in 2-3 min, and 1.69±0.25 and 2.14±0.27 in 29-30 min respectively. The T/L ratio was 1.28±0.10 in 2-3 min and 1.29±0.14 in 29-30 …

Lupus Anticoagulant And Anticardiolipinantibodies In Unexplained Fetal Losses, Güli̇nnaz Alper, Ege Nazan Tavmergen, Yasemi̇n Kabasakal, Taner Onat
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Lupus anticoagulant (LA) and anti-cardiolipin antibodies (ACAs) are acquired antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs), which are considered to be important markers for pregnancy losses and intrauterine fetal demise. LA and ACAs have anticoagulant effects in vitro and thrombotic effects in vivo and are considered to be the cause of recur-rent pregnancy losses (RPLs), resulting from placental vascular thrombosis and infarction. The aim of this study was to identify the most sensitive and specific method of deter-mining APA positivity and to evaluate the prevalence of APA in patients with unex-plained RPL. The experiment consisted of 25 women with unexplained RPL, the patient group, …

In this study, we evaluated 39 patients, who had been followed up in various centers, in order to determine the psychosocial effects of IDDM on children and young patients. The mean age of the patients was 15.58±2.29 years and the mean duration of diabetes was 4.41±3 years. We measured the depression and self-esteem scores in all patients using a standardized questionnaire for Turkish children. Depression was found in four patients (10.3%), and the self-esteem scores of all patients were within the normal range. There was no correlation betwenn depression or self-esteem scores and age, sex, puberty, duration of diabetes or …

Angela Koenig of Lemay worries about her diabetic son Kyle all the time. Medicaid dropped Koenig from its rolls in November 1997. She took a new job a few months later as a bill collector for MCI in Earth City. But she can’t afford to pay $320 a month for family health insurance coverage. Koenig, son Kyle, 6, and her daughter Emalee, 2, are without insurance for the first time. “What if he rides his bike and falls and breaks his arm?” asked Koenig, 23. “We really need insurance.”[1]

Arsenic Residues In Grey Mullets Caught In Lake Van, Ali̇ Bi̇lgi̇li̇, Ender Yarsan, İdri̇s Türel
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, pollution caused by arsenic residues in grey mullets (Chalcarburnus tarichii, Pallas 1811) living in Van Lake were investigated. A Total 120 samples, from the four seasons from 01.01.1994 to 01.01.1995 were collected. The organic parts of the muscles were washed with a mixture of magnesium oxide and magnesium nitrate according to the dry ash method and arsenic residues were measured by silver diethyl dithyocarbamate in a spectrophotometer. By analyzing the 120 fish samples, arsenic residues were calculated to be 0.009 - 0.347 ppm (average 0.051±0.046). In light of these results as the arsenic residues in grey mullets …

Detection Of Listeria Species In Minced Beef, Ufuk Tansel Şi̇reli̇, İrfan Erol
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In recent years there has been an increase in the number of outbreaks of human listeriosis and contaminated foods have been considered to be a potential source of infection. In this study, a total of 100 minced beef samples were obtained from different butchers and supermarkets in Ankara and examined for the presence and degree of contamination with Listeria species. The minced beef samples were collected in aseptic conditions and transported to the laboratory in cold storage. The method suggested by USDA - FSIS was used for the isolation and identification of Listeria spp. In addition, the degree of contamination …

Determination Of Cyanide Levels In Sorghum Halepense At Different Vegetation Stages In The Aydın Area, Mustafa Sari, Ferda Akar, Fatma Karataş
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, HCN levels in 150 Sorghum halepense samples obtained from the province of Aydın during 3 different vegetation periods were determined. The analysis was carried out using spectrophotometry. According to the results of the analysis, average HCN levels during the tiller, flowering, and postflowering stages in Sorghum halepense leaves, were 460.8, 144.8, and 44.22 ppm respectively. It was concluded that HCN levels in Sorghum halepense growing in the province of Aydın would be toxic for herbivores during the tillers and flowering stages.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this project was characterization of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against O 1 Man. 69, a vaccine strain of the Ankara Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Institute and detection of the antigenic variation in field virus strains. For that purpose,17 MAbs were used. Activities of MAbs against 146S, enzyme treated 146S (146S-T) and 12S antigenic particles of O 1 Man. 69 virus strain were estimated by indirect ELISA. Reaction to viral capsid proteins was detected by Western immunoblotting and detection of the neutralization specificity was done by both in vitro and in vivo neutralization tests and mouse protection assay. …

The research was performed to investigate factors affecting milk composition and chaning of milk components with lactation stage in Anatolian buffaloes. The material of the research was formed by 109 milk samples belonging to 28 cows rasied at 12 units of 3 seperate village of Çarsamba District of Samsun Province. Milk samples were taken at AM milkings in one month intervals. Lactation stages' effect was found significant level statistically (P

Stewart Pollock knows how to make a play. On his favorite kind of court - the kind with a net in the middle - he can set up the winning volley with a perfectly placed approach shot. On the court on which he served for the past twenty years, the New Jersey Supreme Court, Justice Pollock proved himself an equally gifted playmaker, earning a reputation as one who could forge consensus through judicial craftsmanship and common sense. Appellate judging is a team sport, though one would hardly know it by looking at recent United States Supreme Court cases, with all …
