Family conceptions of the nature of their relative's illness are part of the coping process and reveal the cultural construction of the illness experience. As part of a larger qualitative study conducted at the Schizophrenia Program of the Department of Psychiatry, Escola Paulista de Medicina - Unifesp, 14 relatives of 8 out-patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were interviewed and invited to talk freely about their ideas and feelings concerning their relative's problem. Qualitative analysis was conducted to elicit categories of illness representations. Three main categories are presented for discussion, Problema de Nervoso, Problema na Cabeça and Problema Espiritual (Nerves, Head and …

A Look Into The New Diabetes Criteria, Jenny Kinsley Jan 1999

A Look Into The New Diabetes Criteria, Jenny Kinsley

Honors Capstones

Diabetes Mellitus, a metabolic disorder of hyperglycemia affecting over 16 million people in the U.S., can result in long-term complications if not diagnosed and properly treated early. Diagnostic criteria were originally set in 1985 by the World Health Organization (WHO), using the oral glucose tolerance test along with a fasting plasma glucose (FBS) to confirm diagnosis. In 1997, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) determined that only a FBS was necessary to make a diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to compare interpretations of the FBS values of subjects using the WHO and ADA criteria. Thirty participants, from 35-65 years …

Equity As A Paradigm For Sustainability: Evolving The Process Toward Interspecies Equity, Gwendellyn Io Earnshaw Jan 1999

Equity As A Paradigm For Sustainability: Evolving The Process Toward Interspecies Equity, Gwendellyn Io Earnshaw

Animal Law Review

The concept of sustainability has evolved through a wide variety of definitions. Traditionally, sustainability was seen as a system of management which would allow humans to perpetually exploit the world's natural resources; that is, to manage resources so they would never be depleted. More recently, however, writers have argued the traditional concept of sustainability has failed because a truly sustainable system recognizes all resources and stakeholders for their inherent value. Equity is thus the essential ethic of a sustainable system. This article adopts this modern view of sustainability and identifies interspecies equity-the consideration of nonhuman animals based upon their inherent …

Animal Thing To Animal Person -- Thoughts On Time, Place, And Theories, Steven M. Wise Jan 1999

Animal Thing To Animal Person -- Thoughts On Time, Place, And Theories, Steven M. Wise

Animal Law Review

The rule that "animals are property," and do not merit legal rights, is ingrained in the law of English-speaking countries. Challenges to this rule must be brought in strategic, thoughtfu, sensitive, sophisticated, and coordinated ways. This essay offers seven related strategic considerationsf or anyone who wishes to battle the "animals as property" rule.

Religious Attitudes Toward Cloning: A Tale Of Two Creatures, Dena S. Davis Jan 1999

Religious Attitudes Toward Cloning: A Tale Of Two Creatures, Dena S. Davis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This Essay offers one analytic structure with which to approach the study of religious responses to cloning and suggests that, whereas the negative reactions are tied to a Frankenstein approach--that is, one which uses all the horror of that myth to express our fears about humans getting into the creation business--the more positive reactions express what I will call the Golem approach, based on a lesser-known legend.

One Piece Of The Puzzle: Why State Brownfields Programs Can't Lure Businesses To The Urban Cores Without Finding The Missing Pieces, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson Jan 1999

One Piece Of The Puzzle: Why State Brownfields Programs Can't Lure Businesses To The Urban Cores Without Finding The Missing Pieces, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

U.S. EPA, state legislatures, and state administrative agencies have invested considerable time and money resources to encouraging urban renewal through the redevelopment of contaminated urban properties, called brownfields. These efforts attempt to induce businesses to clean and redevelop brownfields by reducing the numerous environmental barriers to redevelopment, such as the enormous cost of clean-up and threat of immeasurable liability. In this Article, I argue that environmental barriers to redevelopment, although important, are but one piece of a complicated urban redevelopment puzzle. The other pieces, largely missing from existing efforts to encourage redevelopment of brownfields are non-environmental factors, such as size …

Maternal-Fetal Conflicts, The Social Construction Of Maternal Deviance, And Some Thoughts About Love And Justice, April L. Cherry Jan 1999

Maternal-Fetal Conflicts, The Social Construction Of Maternal Deviance, And Some Thoughts About Love And Justice, April L. Cherry

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

FIRST PARAGRAPH: In the short amount of time that we have together today, I would like to accomplish three tasks. First, I would like to offer a brief overview of what and whom we are talking about when we talk about "maternal-fetal conflicts." Second, I would like to discuss some of the assumptions that are held about the women involved in these "conflicts," with the hope that giving voice to these assumptions might help us better understand why we may be willing to accept the coerced medical treatment of pregnant women, or legal sanctions against pregnant women who refuse treatment …

Disentangling The Law Of Public Protest, Kevin F. O'Neill Jan 1999

Disentangling The Law Of Public Protest, Kevin F. O'Neill

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The purpose of this Article is to alleviate the confusion that so frequently surrounds the law of public protest. Much of that confusion can be avoided, when analyzing a given case, by zeroing in on who is regulating the speech in question. There are four regulatory players, who act in four distinct settings: restrictions enacted by legislative bodies, the issuance of permits and fees by government administrators, speech-restrictive injunctions imposed by the judiciary, and the influence of police as a regulatory presence on the street. Discrete lines of precedent attend each of these players. Legislators and judges, for example, are …

Analysing The Extraterritorial Application Of The National Environmental Policy Act, Browne C. Lewis Jan 1999

Analysing The Extraterritorial Application Of The National Environmental Policy Act, Browne C. Lewis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of whether, in light of Congress' actions and the judicial precedents, NEPA should be applied extraterritorially. Section One discusses the extraterritorial application of United States laws in general, the bases supporting the extraterritorial application, and the tests courts have relied upon to determine the appropriateness of extraterritorial application. The section also explores the presumption against extraterritoriality and the logic behind it.

In the second section, the paper addresses the extraterritorial application of NEPA. That sections includes an analysis of the congressional, executive and judicial treatment of the issue. The third …
