Data Warehousing Failures: Case Studies And Findings, M. Dean Fenton, M. E. Haywood, Joseph Gregory Gerard, L. E. Gonzalez, Hugh J. Watson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Eight studies of data warehousing failures are presented. They were written based on interviews with people who were associated with the projects. The extent of the failure varies with the organization, but in all cases, the project was at least a disappointment. Read the cases and prepare a one or two page discussion of the following: 1. What’s the scope of what can be considered a data warehousing failure? Discuss. 2. What generalizations apply across the cases? 3. What do you find most interesting in the failure stories? 4. Do they provide any insights about how a failure might be …

Federal Special Education Law And Discipline Of Students With Disabilities: A Description Of The Factors Influencing Key Actors Involved In The Development Of Sections 612(A)(1)(A) And 615(K) Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Cheryl Corona Magill Jan 1999

Federal Special Education Law And Discipline Of Students With Disabilities: A Description Of The Factors Influencing Key Actors Involved In The Development Of Sections 612(A)(1)(A) And 615(K) Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Cheryl Corona Magill

Theses and Dissertations

Until the 1997 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), policies regarding discipline of students with disabilities were set primarily by case law. In 1995, the debates over reauthorization of the IDEA focused on proposed provisions designed to describe. at the federal level. the measures and procedures to be used by public school officials when disciplining students with disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the factors influencing key actors involved in the development of the two sections ofthe I997 IDEA that address discipline of students with disabilities. A review of the literature suggested …

Optimisation Studies In A Batch Pharmaceutical Company, Sarah Fitzgerald Jan 1999

Optimisation Studies In A Batch Pharmaceutical Company, Sarah Fitzgerald

Theses

This thesis outlines a collaborative project between industry and academia based on a short term research contract.

In the past in Eli Lilly, process optimisation in a multi-purpose, modular building had been mainly confined to equipment commissioning and new product development. It was necessary to embark upon an exercise to develop an optimisation programme m order to meet the increased requirements and demands of the building. Increased market demands, through the introduction of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, and the demand for cycle time reduction through the expiry of existing patents, made the need for optimisation inevitable.

The purpose of this thesis …

Early Childhood Education: The Disadvantaged Child: How Early Is Early?, Eileen O'Neill Jan 1999

Early Childhood Education: The Disadvantaged Child: How Early Is Early?, Eileen O'Neill

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper is influenced by many years of work in residential services for children in need. My experience has spanned the changing nature of residential care, from the group home model of the 1970 and 1980's - which provided long term care to children, apart from their family, with little or no family contact, - to the more individualised care offered in units today for children with very specific needs, for short periods of time, usually in conjunction with their own families. This is in keeping with the spirit of the Child Care Act (1991). Children admitted to care are …

From Family To Care: Issues For The Child, Paul Bailey Jan 1999

From Family To Care: Issues For The Child, Paul Bailey

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

It is still widely held that the traditional or conventional nuclear family is the only suitable environment in which children can grow up and that any deviation from this norm puts children at a considerable disadvantage (Kahan, 1989). The vulnerability of children and young people coming into residential care in Ireland due to their dysfunctional family experiences, and how coming into residential care and their subsequent experience therein can sometimes further increase this level of vulnerability for the adolescent child has been well documented. This paper discusses the question: What can we, as residential child care workers and agencies, do …

Mental Health, Adolescents And Children: A Comparative Analysis Of The Practice/Policy Interface, John S. G. Wells Jan 1999

Mental Health, Adolescents And Children: A Comparative Analysis Of The Practice/Policy Interface, John S. G. Wells

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Mental health services for children and adolescents in Ireland exist in a state of ambiguity. Services operate within a context of resource constraints and increasing demand. The result is that practitioners have to prioritise the client groups according to policy dictates. In Ireland the policy priority is children at risk of physical and sexual abuse. Utilising current literature in the field, this paper discusses the potential consequences of such a focus for clients, practitioners and policy through a comparative analysis with the United Kingdom. It is argued that a lack of legislative clarity, combined with a focus on abuse has …

Disadvantage Or Disadvantaging: Conceptualising Class Differences In Education As A Disease Or As A Process?, Roland Tormey Jan 1999

Disadvantage Or Disadvantaging: Conceptualising Class Differences In Education As A Disease Or As A Process?, Roland Tormey

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Much of the writing on differences in educational attainment by different social classes in Ireland has started by accepting the use of the tenn 'educational disadvantage' and trying to define it afterwards (Kellaghan et at., 1995; Boldt and Devine, 1998). Others, like Drudy and Lynch have simply dismissed the use of the tenns out of hand, preferring instead to write about social class differences in education (1993, p 52). Far from discouraging the use of the term, this latter sort of intervention seems to have had no effect and the use of the tenn has continued to proliferate in this …

Pumping Dietary Iron: Implications For Aerobic Endurance Exercise, Melvin H. Williams

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) In an earlier issue of ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal (Sept/Oct, 988), Barry A. Franklin, Ph. D., FACSM, president of ACSM, authored an article called," Pumping Iron: Rationale, Benefits, Safety, and Prescription" where he presented evidence supporting the health benefits of resistance training an anaerobic type of exercise training. As we all know, aerobic endurance exercise training also conveys multiple health benefits.

Loss Of Earning Capcity Benefits In The Community Property Jurisdiction - How Do You Figure., Aloysius A. Leopold Jan 1999

Loss Of Earning Capcity Benefits In The Community Property Jurisdiction - How Do You Figure., Aloysius A. Leopold

St. Mary's Law Journal

In the interest of uniformity, benefits for the loss of earning capacity should be subject to the same legal principle when determining marital property rights, regardless of the context in which those rights arise. However, courts throughout the United States have relied upon four different methods to determine title to loss of earning capacity benefits upon divorce. These approaches include the unitary approach, the analytic approach, the mechanistic approach, and the case-by-case approach. Because the determination of title to benefits varies tremendously, the need for certainty in this area of the law is necessary particularly in light of the Texas …

An Explanatory Model For The Maya Ethnomedical Syndrome Cha'lam Tsots, George E. Luber Jan 1999

An Explanatory Model For The Maya Ethnomedical Syndrome Cha'lam Tsots, George E. Luber

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Although the ethnomedical system of the Highland Maya is generally well understood, little is known about the Tzeltal Maya ethnomedical syndrome Cha'lam tsots, or "second hair." In an attempt to better understand the emic conceptualization, and possible biomedical equivalence of Cha'lam tsots, ethnographic data from semi-structured interviews was collected from the Tzeltal Maya municipality of Tenejapa, in the central highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. Analysis of explanatory models elicited from 20 informants revealed a generalized agreement as to the etiology, symptomatology, course, prognosis, and treatments of this illness. Analysis of these findings will help guide further research into the …

Editorial: Roles And Expertise, Alvin Sallee Jan 1999

Editorial: Roles And Expertise, Alvin Sallee

Journal of Family Strengths

We all take on roles, probably several each day. Parent, worker, consumer, spouse, or shortstop, the roles we play are varied and complex. After one's own family, perhaps the roles of consumer and worker are most important to Family Preservation. How do we come to play these roles, and in what ways are they changing, or should they change? Often, neither the worker or family set out to play their roles, but through the twist and turns of life, the opportunity to serve and preserve a family presents itself. At a recent conference, a group of workers spoke of how, …

Coordination Of Family Preservation Services In A Rural Community: A Case Study, Richard Freer, Kathleen Wells Jan 1999

Coordination Of Family Preservation Services In A Rural Community: A Case Study, Richard Freer, Kathleen Wells

Journal of Family Strengths

Family preservation programs designed to prevent the out-of-home placement of children depend on the coordination of services from multiple agencies. Little is known regarding how coordination occurs. This case study examined this issue. Information was sought from all workers who provided services to each of five families and 'from families' case records. Thirty-one workers were interviewed with a semi-structured interview schedule containing rating scales and questions with open-ended response formats. Case records were reviewed with a case record review form. Analyses of data revealed the following. Services were coordinated to a moderate degree but that coordination deteriorated over time. Workers …

Examples Of Collaboration Between Psychologists And Clergy, Laura C. Edwards, Brian R. K. B. Lim, Mark R. Mcminn, Amy W. Dominguez

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Some psychologists may be interested in working collaboratively with clergy and yet may not know where to start. What kinds of collaborative projects are possible? A qualitative analysis of 77 narratives offered by psychologists and clergy involved in collaboration revealed that collaboration between psychologists and clergy currently takes place in at least four contexts: mental health services, parish life, community concerns, and academics. Reported obstacles to collaboration are also described. Essential attitudes for psychologists interested in collaborating with clergy include respecting clergy as professionals, willingness to venture out from traditional professional settings, and exploring innovative collaborative possibilities.

Flooding, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "A behavioral approach used in elimination of unwanted fears or phobias. In flooding the client either is directly exposed to or imagines highly frightening events in a protected setting. Presumably the fear-inducing stimuli will lose their influence once the individual is fully exposed to them and discovers that no harm occurs. Following a discussion of the person's fears, the person is then asked to imagine the most feared situation. The therapist describes the salient fearful elements to enhance visualization. Thus an individual who is fearful of elevators is asked to imagine boarding a glass-enclosed high-speed elevator, then watching through …
