A Matter Of Prostitution: Becoming Respectable, Beverly Balos, Mary Louise Fellows Jan 1999

A Matter Of Prostitution: Becoming Respectable, Beverly Balos, Mary Louise Fellows

Articles

Feminists have achieved significant antiviolence legal reforms in the areas of domestic abuse, sexual harassment, and rape over the past three decades. These reforms, however, have reinforced old borders between the traditional categories of violence and prostitution and have constructed new borders by maintaining the distinction between worthy and unworthy women. Despite these flaws, the law reform efforts have the capacity to transform the legal and social meaning of prostitution. By adopting an approach that transcends consent or coercion and private or public, Professors Fellows and Balos use the concept of respectability to introduce an analytically powerful framework for rethinking …

The Transformation Of The Juvenile Court--Part Ii: Social Structure, Race, And The "Crack Down" On Youth Crime, Barry C. Feld Jan 1999

The Transformation Of The Juvenile Court--Part Ii: Social Structure, Race, And The "Crack Down" On Youth Crime, Barry C. Feld

Articles

Part I briefly analyzes the social history of the juvenile court and argues that the progressive reformers who created the juvenile court designed it to discriminate against "other peoples' children," a feature that carries over into contemporary juvenile justice administration. Part II analyzes the "constitutional domestication" of the juvenile court. It places the U.S. Supreme Court's juvenile court "due process" decisions in a broader social structural context and argues that the Court emphasized procedural safeguards as part of its broader agenda to protect the civil rights and liberty interests of minorities. Part III analyzes the impact of the juvenile court's …

Case Finding And Case Management Of Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Infections Among Women: What We Do And Do Not Know, Nicole Haberland, Beverly Winikoff, Nancy L. Sloan, Christiana Coggins, Christopher J. Elias

Reproductive Health

As the world grapples with the HIV pandemic, the implementation of the agenda determined by the International Conference on Population and Development (1994) at Cairo, and the matter of providing health services of adequate quality in an ethical, gender-sensitive manner, new questions are arising about how to attend to reproductive tract infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), among women. This paper reviews the results of validation studies of syndromic algorithms, other nonlaboratory clinically based tools, and risk scoring for finding women infected with chlamydia and gonorrhea, particularly among those attending family planning and antenatal clinics in developing countries. The results …

Beyond The Formalism Debate: Expert Reasoning, Fuzzy Logic, And Complex Statutes, Edward Adams, Daniel Farber Jan 1999

Beyond The Formalism Debate: Expert Reasoning, Fuzzy Logic, And Complex Statutes, Edward Adams, Daniel Farber

Articles

Formalists and antiformalists continue to debate the utility of using legislative history and current social values to interpret statutes. Lost in the debate, however, is a clear model of how judges actually make decisions. Rather than focusing on complex problems presented by actual judicial decisions, formalists and antiformalists concentrate on stylized examples of simple statutes. In this Article, Professors Adams and Farber construct a more functional model of judicial decisionmaking by focusing on complex problems. They use cognitive psychological research on expert reasoning and techniques from an emerging area in the field of artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, to construct their model. …

Environmental Responsiveness In Australia's Bus And Coach Supply Chain, Ann M. Brewer Jan 1999

Environmental Responsiveness In Australia's Bus And Coach Supply Chain, Ann M. Brewer

Journal of Public Transportation

The responsiveness of business enterprises to the natural environment is of great concern to both the government and industrial sectors in Australia. A key question emerges as to which industries are environmentally more responsive than others. This article examines transportations contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It identifies and describes environmental responsiveness within Australia s bus and coach sector, a major operator of passenger transport. This sector is defined in the full context of the supply chain; that is, the integration of business processes from manufacturers and suppliers of vehicles and fuel to the providers of services and information for …

A Transit Access Analysis Of Tanf Recipients In Portland, Oregon, Thomas W. Sanchez Jan 1999

A Transit Access Analysis Of Tanf Recipients In Portland, Oregon, Thomas W. Sanchez

Journal of Public Transportation

Little evidence exists regarding the relationship between transit service availability and the ability of welfare recipients to find stable employment. While policymakers continue to assert that increased public transit mobility can positively affect employment status, there is little empirical evidence to support this theory. It is generally assumed that public transit can effectively link unemployed, carless persons with appropriate job locations. From these assumptions stems the common belief that if adequate transit were available, the likelihood of being employed would increase. Hence, the call for more transit services to assist moving welfare recipients to gainful employment. Current available evidence is …
