Family Law And Gay And Lesbian Family Issues In The Twentieth Century, Nancy Polikoff, David Chambers Jan 1999

Family Law And Gay And Lesbian Family Issues In The Twentieth Century, Nancy Polikoff, David Chambers

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Over the past thirty years, lesbians and gay men have increasingly challenged conventional definitions of marriage and the family. In this brief article, the authors tell the story of gay people and family law in the United States across this period. They divide their discussion into two sections: issues regarding the recognition of the same-sex couple relationship and issues regarding gay men and lesbians as parents. These issues overlap, of course, but since family law discussions commonly treat adult-adult issues of all sorts separately from parent-child issues, the authors believe it convenient and helpful to do so as well.

Policy Watch: Developments In Antitrust Economics, Jonathan Baker Jan 1999

Policy Watch: Developments In Antitrust Economics, Jonathan Baker

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

During the late 1970s and 1980s, the federal courts transformed antitrust rules and the federal enforcement agencies altered their case selection criteria in response to theories developed by industrial organization economists. These developments in economic thinking, often associated with the Chicago school, led current antitrust law and practice toward a greater skepticism about the relationship between market concentration and market power and a greater recognition of the possible efficiency-enhancing role of vertical agreements (contracts between firms and their customers or suppliers) than was present in the 1950s and 1960s.This survey will begin where those developments leave off by highlighting more …

Differential Diagnosis Of Late Onset Psychosis Using Neuropsychological Assessment And Neuroimaging Techniques, Susan Fralick Ball

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Few references in the literature have been made with respect to the diagnosis of late onset psychosis by the use of behavioral observations coupled with neuropsychological and neuroimaging techniques. This is a report of the case of a 68-year-old woman who experienced a sudden onset of psychotic illness characterized by delusions and confabulation. As part of her neurobehavioral evaluation, a SPECT scan revealed right frontal and left anterior temporal lobe hypoperfusion. Serial neuropsychological evaluations demonstrated decline on tests of executive control (monitoring, allocation of attention, perseveration) and visuospatial abilities, whereas performance in other areas of cognitive functioning remained close to …

The Relationship Between Septic Systems And Incidence Of Giardiasis And Shigellosis In Florida, Sharon Heber Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Septic Systems And Incidence Of Giardiasis And Shigellosis In Florida, Sharon Heber

All ETDs from UAB

A retrospective cohort study was conducted, to assess the relationship between onsite sewage treatment and disposal system (OSTDS) failures and giardiasis and shigellosis. Cases in close proximity to OSTDS were analyzed to ascertain any association with failed systems. It was predicted that the risk of acquiring giardiasis or shigellosis was greater than one when comparing exposure to failed versus functional OSTDS. Records of failed systems, functional systems, and disease cases were mapped using a geographical information system (GIS). Cases and households with cases around failed systems were considered exposed cases, and cases and households with cases around functional systems were …

Social And Legal Repercussions Of Latinos' Colonized Mentality, Laura M. Padilla Jan 1999

Social And Legal Repercussions Of Latinos' Colonized Mentality, Laura M. Padilla

Faculty Scholarship

This essay begins by defining internalized oppression and racism and exposing the harms they cause. It dissects the reasons we engage in internalized racism and explains how once exposed, it will be easier to engage in a conscious effort to eradicate internalized racism. It will then describe how the intersectionality of internalized oppression and racism is expressed in the Latino community. The essay will then re-imagine Latino identity without internalized oppression and racism. It will include ideas on how to overcome internalized oppression and racism generally, both at the corporate and individual levels. The essay concludes that exposing internalized oppression …

The Effect Of Sinoaortic Denervation On Renal Wrap Hypertension, J. Mark Van Ness, Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde, Teresa Craig, Joseph R. Haywood

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

The purpose of this study was to determine whether sinoaortic deafferentation (SAD) alters the severity of hypertension or sympathoadrenal contribution to mean blood pressure (MAP) during renal wrap hypertension. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters for 24-hour recording of MAP and heart rate. All rats underwent either SAD or sham SAD (Intact) surgery and were allowed to recover for 10 to 14 days. The rats were then assigned to a normotensive (Sham) group or a hypertensive (Wrap) group in which 1-kidney figure-8 renal wrap was performed. SAD increased the acute MAP response to renal wrap (Intact-Sham=5+/-1 mm Hg, …

Evaluating Bankruptcy Mediation, William J. Woodward Jr. Jan 1999

Evaluating Bankruptcy Mediation, William J. Woodward Jr.

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This Article aims to do several things. First, it will briefly describe a court sponsored mediation program developed several years ago by the court and bankruptcy bar in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The program depended on trained mediators who did their work on court-selected bankruptcy matters on a pro bono basis. Partly because of its "cost-free" nature, the program created a need for periodic evaluation to ensure the court and bar that it was delivering positive results without inflicting undesirable hidden costs on the participants or the local bankruptcy system as a whole.6

Constitutional Protection For Conversations Between Therapists And Clients, Paul E. Salamanca Jan 1999

Constitutional Protection For Conversations Between Therapists And Clients, Paul E. Salamanca

Missouri Law Review

People have long perceived a connection between mental and even physical illness and spiritual anguish. Yet, modem culture tends to view both types of illness from an increasingly medical perspective, seeking a genetic or environmental explanation. In most cases, this "medical model" is probably the best approach, even if it is imperfect. First, the purely medical explanation may be accurate. Second, even if it is not accurate, treating the symptoms of a disease with a spiritual source is probably far easier than treating the source itself. Ultimately, however, we must take note that disease is often not the result of …

Zinc Mining Contamination And Sedimentation Rates Of Historical Overbank Deposits, Honey Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jason L. Carlson Jan 1999

Zinc Mining Contamination And Sedimentation Rates Of Historical Overbank Deposits, Honey Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jason L. Carlson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Sediment-associated contaminants released by past mining activities in the Tri-State Lead and Zinc District in southwest Missouri pose a long-term risk to water quality. This study uses sedimentological and geochemical analyses to describe the relationships between mine contaminant dispersal and historical sedimentation patterns of the Honey Creek watershed ( 176 km2) which drains the Aurora Sub-district along the eastern boundary of the Tri-State District. This watershed has been subjected to an intense period of Pb-Zn mining that began in 1886, peaked in 1916, and ended by 1930. The objectives of this study are to: (1) determine the magnitude and distribution …
