Implant Strategies On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Finishing Steers, Rob Cooper, Todd Milton, Frank Prouty Jan 1999

Implant Strategies On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Finishing Steers, Rob Cooper, Todd Milton, Frank Prouty

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A 145-day finishing trial was conducted to evaluate implant strategies on performance and carcass characteristics of yearling steers. Implanting steers with Synovex® C initially and then reimplanting with Synovex® Plus 75 days prior to slaughter improved feed efficiency compared to a single implant of Synovex® Plus or a reimplant program using Synovex® S. Carcass quality, as measured by the percentage USDA Choice carcasses and marbling scores, was unaffected by implant strategy. However, implanting steers with Synovex® PlusTM as a single implant or in a reimplant program increased profitability because feed efficiency and carcass weight were increased without decreasing carcass …

Section Three Of The Defense Of Marriage Act: Is Marriage Reserved To The States, Kristian D. Whitten Jan 1999

Section Three Of The Defense Of Marriage Act: Is Marriage Reserved To The States, Kristian D. Whitten

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

It seems clear that the Framers of the Constitution of the United States believed that laws defining and regulating marriage were among the "numerous and indefinite" powers reserved to the states. Early U.S. Supreme Court decisions echoed that sentiment, and as recently as United States v. Lopez, the Court has cited regulation of domestic relations as a quintessentially state power. In 1996 Congress and the President reacted to the possibility that Hawaii might license same-sex marriages by enacting the Defense of Marriage Act, Section 3 which defines the words "marriage" and "spouse" for all federal laws, regulations and programs. This …

Western Australian Agriculture - Key Achievements 1998 - 1999, Agriculture Western Australia

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

During 1998/99 Western Australia's agricultural industries continued to build on an enviable international reputation for a professional approach to business and a proven track record in producing and supplying food and fibre products of consistently high ·quality.

A global increase in demand for food and fibre, changing consumer behaviour, and further world trade liberalisation offer great challenges and opportunities for the export of Western Australian agricultural produce. Agriculture Western Australia has responded to these changes with increased emphasis on quality assurance and supply chain management to focus on specific consumer and end-user requirements, and to improve alliances between producers, processors …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Fourteen rats were examined and divided into two groups of 7: the control (Group a) and NGF-treated animals (Group B). All animals received a 50 g clip-compression injury to tthe spinal cord at the T9 level. In the NGF-treated animals, NGF (0.1 mg/kg NGF) was injected subcutaneously for seven days. After spinal cord injury, the mean AChE activity was 41.47±1.7122 activated substrate min/ml/gr. wet tissue and 47.52±1.471 in NGF-treated animals. The difference between Groups A and B was statistically significant (p

A Review Of The Anticoagulant Pesticide Pindone, Laurie E. Twigg, Tim J. Lowe, Gary R. Martin, Garry S. Gray Jan 1999

A Review Of The Anticoagulant Pesticide Pindone, Laurie E. Twigg, Tim J. Lowe, Gary R. Martin, Garry S. Gray

Books & book chapters

A review of the use of pindone for rabbit control in Western Australia is timely due to increased public concern over the use of this toxin, and because non-target deaths of some native Australian animals have been known to occur following its use. Pindone is one of the first generation indandione anticoagulant rodenticides which were developed in the late 1940' s. The toxicity of anticoagulants arises from their inhibition of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the blood. Thus therapeutic administration of vitamin K provides a reliable antidote against anticoagulant poisoning. Pindone is slow acting and works best with repeated small …

Tax Expenditure Analysis And Constitutional Decisions, Linda Sugin Jan 1999

Tax Expenditure Analysis And Constitutional Decisions, Linda Sugin

UC Law Journal

Proponents of tax expenditure analysis have insisted that when tax programs are economically equivalent to direct spending programs, they should be treated as legally equivalent. While agreeing that tax expenditure analysis is a tool of immense importance and usefulness to legislatures, Professor Sugin argues that courts should be wary about adopting that analysis into constitutional adjudication. She analyzes the problems of legalizing tax expenditure analysis by exploring the definitional problems inherent in defining the tax base, the political manipulability of the tax expenditure budget, the dangers of constitutionalizing the definition of income, and the theoretical challenges presented by the hybrid …

Misconceptions And Misleading Information Prevail - Less Regulation Does Not Mean Less Danger To Consumers: Dangerous Herbal Weight Loss Products, Jennifer Sardina

Journal of Law and Health

This Note will examine the dangers associated with current dietary supplement regulation under the DSHEA and the problem of ill-informed consumers. As reflected in the title of this Note, misconceptions about dietary supplement regulation are abundant; consequently, section II of this Note will further discuss and offer illustrations in support of this position. Part III gives an overview of current regulation under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. Also a brief discussion of the legislation that preceded the DSHEA is offered in section VI. Part V of this Note analyzes and defines the dietary ingredients that are …

Consumer-Directed Prescription Drug Advertising: Effects On Public Health , William E. Holtz

Journal of Law and Health

This Paper will evaluate the effectiveness of the current FDA regulatory scheme regarding consumer-directed prescription drug advertising. Part II discusses the relevant history of consumer-directed prescription drug advertising of prescription drugs which is a relatively new practice in the United States. Possible explanations are reviewed for why the change in focus from physicians to consumers as the targets of such advertising has occurred. Part III explains the major classifications of consumer-directed advertising that the FDA has categorized and examines the differences existing among them. Part IV focuses on the current FDA regulatory scheme and begins to expose some of the …

Effect Of Hypoxia On The Respiratory Burst And Associated Bactericidal Activity In The Pronephritic Cells Of The Mummichog, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Ann Boleza Jan 1999

Effect Of Hypoxia On The Respiratory Burst And Associated Bactericidal Activity In The Pronephritic Cells Of The Mummichog, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Ann Boleza

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Estuaries provide habitat and spawning grounds for numerous species of plants, birds, fish and shellfish. Levels of dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH in estuarine waters vary with diurnal, tidal and seasonal cycles. Anthropogenic factors may further exacerbate these variations in water quality. The studies presented here tested the hypothesis that hypoxia, including hypercapnia and acidosis, suppresses antibacterial defenses provided by phagocytic cells. The respiratory burst of phagocytic cells was stimulated with zymosan and Vibrio parahaemolyticus to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which are potent antibacterial agents. The respiratory burst is oxygen dependent and therefore may be inhibited by hypoxic …

Managerial Uses Of Activity-Based Costing, Mandy Ritzke Jan 1999

Managerial Uses Of Activity-Based Costing, Mandy Ritzke

Honors Capstones

Product costs are a function of activities. Activity-based costing uses this theory to more accurately cost products. More companies are considering activitybased costing for their products. These companies have a lot of questions that need to be answered before switching their entire costing services. There are four categories of costs that are used in determining the cost of a product. By grouping costs into these categories, companies are able to see what costs are unnecessary and should be eliminated. Activity-based costing provides for better decision-making. A manager faces many decisions about products including the "make or buy decision". When using …

Food For Sport Or Faustian Bargain: Regulating Performance Enhancing Dietary Supplements, Jennifer Kay Braman Jan 1999

Food For Sport Or Faustian Bargain: Regulating Performance Enhancing Dietary Supplements, Jennifer Kay Braman

Cleveland State Law Review

The defining line between legal and illegal substance-between dietary supplement and drug is horribly skewed. Accordingly, Part I of this Note will investigate the complexities that exist with regard to the classification and regulation of dietary supplements, looking at the history leading to the passage of the governing Dietary Health and Supplement Act of 1994. Part II will focus on supplements that consumers may use for performance enhancement purposes, and the regulation of sports products. Part III will look at the regulatory debate over dietary supplements, the andro product example and the interrelationship between drugs and sport. Part IV will …

The Abortion Right, Originalism, And The Fourteenth Amendment, Steven Graines, Justin Wyatt Jan 1999

The Abortion Right, Originalism, And The Fourteenth Amendment, Steven Graines, Justin Wyatt

Cleveland State Law Review

In this article, the Privileges or Immunities Clause will be re-conceived in its original context, at the center of the Fourteenth Amendment. This re-conception includes the assumption that The Slaughter-House Cases" were decided incorrectly.'" The contention of the article is that abortion restrictions, as a specific originalist matter, can be considered economic legislation and that they also economically burden women, such that they unconstitutionally abridge two privileges or immunities, the Lochnerian liberties to contract and the engagement in any of the common occupations. Specifically, abortion restrictions violate "the prohibition on redistributive 'class' legislation ... that was deeply rooted in the …

The Maladaptation Of Miranda To Advance Directives: A Critique Of The Implementation Of The Patient Self-Determination Act, Thaddeus Mason Pope Jan 1999

The Maladaptation Of Miranda To Advance Directives: A Critique Of The Implementation Of The Patient Self-Determination Act, Thaddeus Mason Pope

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, Thaddeus Pope argues that the Patient Self Determination Act (PSDA) is a failure on its own terms. The Article first identifiesthe central purpose of the Act as the protection of patient autonomy. The Article then reviews much of the empirical research on the implementation of the Act. This research suggests that the medical preferences expressed in advance directives completed pursuant to the PSDA are usually not based on real understanding because patients are merely "Mirandized" of their right to direct their post-autonomous medical care. Although some scholars contend that this is the most that can be expected …
