Trace-Element Concentrations In Streambed Sediment Across The Conterminous United States, Karen Rice Jan 1999

Trace-Element Concentrations In Streambed Sediment Across The Conterminous United States, Karen Rice

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Trace-element concentrations in 541 streambed-sediment samples collected from 20 study areas across the conterminous United States were examined as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. Sediment samples were sieved and the <63-μm fraction was retained for determination of total concentrations of trace elements. Aluminum, iron, titanium, and organic carbon were weakly or not at all correlated with the nine trace elements examined: arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, and zinc. Four different methods of accounting for background/ baseline concentrations were examined; however, normalization was not required because field sieving removed most of the background differences between samples. The sum of concentrations of trace elements characteristic of urban settings-copper, mercury, lead, and zinc-was well correlated with population density, nationwide. Median concentrations of seven trace elements (all nine examined except arsenic and selenium) were enriched in samples collected from urban settings relative to agricultural or forested settings. Forty-nine percent of the sites sampled in urban settings had concentrations of one or more trace elements that exceeded levels at which adverse biological effects could occur in aquatic biota.

Gender Differences In The Relationships Among Ses, Family History Of Alcohol Disorders And Alcohol Dependence, Geoffrey M. Curran, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Elizabeth M. Hill, Sharon A. Mudd, Frederic C. Blow, Robert A. Zucker

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Objective: Potential moderator and mediator roles of several measures of socioeconomic status (SES) were investigated for the relationship between a family history of alcoholism( FH) and alcohol dependence symptoms in adulthood. Method: These analyses were performed with a sample of 931 men and 385 women participating in studies at the Alcohol Research Center, University of Michigan. Hierarchical multiple regression equations were used to assess whether SES mediated and moderated relationships between FH and alcohol dependence symptoms. Results: In general, measures of SES (education, occupation, personal and household income) were more important predictors of alcohol dependence symptoms among men, while FH …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

An epidemiological survey for the monitoring of bovine tuberculosis transmission was carried out in western Liguria, a region in northern Italy. Fifteen Mycobacterium bovis strains were isolated from 63 wild boar samples (62 from mandibular lymph nodes and 1 from a liver specimen). Sixteen mediastinal lymph nodes of 16 head of cattle were collected, and 15 Mycobacterium bovis strains were subsequently cultured. All M. bovisstrains isolated from cattle and wild boars were genotyped by spoligotyping and by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with the IS6110 and IS1081 probes. All M. bovis strains showed the typical spoligotype characterized by …

Learning Outside The Box: Making Connections Between Co-Curricular Activities And The Curriculum, Myra S. Wilhite, Elizabeth A. Banset Jan 1999

Learning Outside The Box: Making Connections Between Co-Curricular Activities And The Curriculum, Myra S. Wilhite, Elizabeth A. Banset

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Students have much to gain from the integration of co-curricular activities into the curriculum. In out-of-class experiences, students tend to take greater responsibility for their own learning; they learn from one another as well as their instructors. In addition, cocurricular activities promote personal growth, physical and mental health, academic achievement, social and cultural awareness, and help students formulate short- and long-range goals.

Successful co-curricular programs encourage the development of friendships, a sense of belonging, enhanced intellectual awareness, improved academic performance, an appreciation of different perspectives, and close interaction with faculty and staff members who really care about students.

Juvenile Curfew Challenges In The Federal Courts: A Constitutional Conundrum Over The (Less Than) Fundamental Rights Of Minors', Charles W. Gerdes Jan 1999

Juvenile Curfew Challenges In The Federal Courts: A Constitutional Conundrum Over The (Less Than) Fundamental Rights Of Minors', Charles W. Gerdes

St. Thomas Law Review

The purpose of this Comment is to examine the inconsistency of analytical methodology that has been employed in the federal courts to determine whether the fundamental rights of minors are coextensive with those of adults in a given regulatory scheme. Specifically, the Comment focuses on this analysis in the context of juvenile curfew ordinance challenges. Further, the Comment proposes a substantive analytical methodology that implements the instruction of Supreme Court precedent in the realm of minors' constitutional rights. To achieve this purpose, the Comment necessarily investigates Supreme Court decisions analyzing the coextensive nature of a minor's fundamental rights. In some …

Missing Pieces Of Memory: A Rejection Of Type Classifications And A Demand For A More Subjective Approach Regarding Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Lonnie B. Richardson Jan 1999

Missing Pieces Of Memory: A Rejection Of Type Classifications And A Demand For A More Subjective Approach Regarding Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Lonnie B. Richardson

St. Thomas Law Review

Part I of this Comment will address Freud's discovery of the effects of childhood sexual abuse. Freud's subsequent suppression of his discovery has led in part to the contemporary disbelief in the existence of childhood sexual abuse. Part II will focus on the psychological aspects of incest, exploring the impact of trauma on children and the resulting repression of the traumatic memories. Part III will review the policy considerations and recent developments involving the statute of limitations in delayed discovery of childhood sexual abuse cases. This part addresses the need to permit plaintiffs to sue for latent harm that went …

Zoning In Florida Under The Religious Freedom Restoration Acts: What City Officials Should Watch Out For In Defending Their Ordinances Against Freedom Of Religion Claims, Steven D. Ginsburg, Natalie J. Carlos Jan 1999

Zoning In Florida Under The Religious Freedom Restoration Acts: What City Officials Should Watch Out For In Defending Their Ordinances Against Freedom Of Religion Claims, Steven D. Ginsburg, Natalie J. Carlos

St. Thomas Law Review

Mr. Justice Holmes, speaking for the Supreme Court in Schenck v. United States, stated: "The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic." Today we revisit this theme in the context of a religious organization's right to build its houses of worship in neighborhoods whose elected representatives have determined are inappropriate locations for churches and synagogues. Does a religion have the right to disregard general zoning laws of neutral application, claiming its beliefs are in conflict and burdened, and asserting they have a superior right to …

Incompetence In The Brain Injured Individual, D. Michael Bitz, Jean S. Bitz Jan 1999

Incompetence In The Brain Injured Individual, D. Michael Bitz, Jean S. Bitz

St. Thomas Law Review

We will initially address the historic acceptance of scientific propositions by the law as they relate to sanity. Insanity is one of the earliest forms of incompetence addressed by the criminal justice system. The current treatment of the courts with respect to head injuries will be presented. Following, there will be an explanation of the philosophical demand for an independent mens rea to sanction punishment. This will be tied to the relationship between head injuries and crime. Specifically, how a form of injury directly affects an individual's ability to make competent decisions while appearing outwardly normal. The legal implications of …
