Ezra And Dorothy Pound: Letters In Captivity, 1945-1946, Robert Spoo, Omar Pound

Books

These fascinating letters capture the most traumatic experience of Ezra Pound's life, when he was incarcerated at the end of World War II and indicted for treason. Omar Pound and Robert Spoo have collected and edited the unpublished correspondence between the poet and his wife, combining it with restricted military orders and extensive references to FBI documents, previously unknown photographs, and an insightful introduction, to create the definitive work on this period of Pound's life.

Measured Energy Expenditure Of Tube-Fed Patients With Severe Neurodevelopment Disabilities, Roland N. Dickerson, Rex O. Brown, Jane M. Gervasio, Emily B. Hak, Lawrence J. Hak, John E. Williams

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Objective: To determine measured resting energy expenditure (REE) of nonambulatory tube-fed patients with severe neurological neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Methods: Twenty patients were prospectively studied. Only steady state indirect calorimetry measurements were taken. All measurements were conducted using a canopy system. Nutritional needs were met entirely by enteral feedings via a permanent ostomy.

Results: REE was widely distributed from 16 kcals/kg/day to 39 kcals/kg/day. The mean REE (888 ±176 kcals/day) of the patients was significantly (p < 0.01) lower than predicted as estimated by the Harris-Benedict equations (1081 ± 155 kcals/day) and World Health Organization equations (1194 ± 167 kcals/day). Fat-free mass (FFM) was the best parameter for predicting REE. Two predictive equations were developed that are not significantly biased and more precise (≤ 15% error) than conventional predictive formulas.

Conclusion: Conventional formulas for estimating energy expenditure are inaccurate and generally overestimate measured energy expenditure of nonambulatory patients with severe developmental …

Cooperative Binding Of Heat Shock Factor To The Yeast Hsp82 Promoter In Vivo And In Vitro, Alexander M. Erkine, Serena F. Magrogan, Edward A. Sekinger, David S. Gross Jan 1999

Cooperative Binding Of Heat Shock Factor To The Yeast Hsp82 Promoter In Vivo And In Vitro, Alexander M. Erkine, Serena F. Magrogan, Edward A. Sekinger, David S. Gross

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

revious work has shown that heat shock factor (HSF) plays a central role in remodeling the chromatin structure of the yeastHSP82 promoter via constitutive interactions with its high-affinity binding site, heat shock element 1 (HSE1). The HSF-HSE1 interaction is also critical for stimulating both basal (noninduced) and induced transcription. By contrast, the function of the adjacent, inducibly occupied HSE2 and -3 is unknown. In this study, we examined the consequences of mutations in HSE1, HSE2, and HSE3 on HSF binding and transactivation. We provide evidence that in vivo, HSF binds to these three sites cooperatively. This cooperativity is seen …

Sharing Alike: French Family Taxation As A Model For Reform, Ayla A. Lari

Duquesne Law Review

The current system of federal income taxation neither recognizes nor accommodates the realities of the modern American family. The author proposes an alternative method of taxing personal income based on the French method of taxation. The French method of taxing each family member's portion of total family income in the aggregate according to a universal rate schedule is examined as a model that better reflects the actual living arrangements and financial burdens of American taxpayers.

Legal Procedure - Collateral Estoppel Doctrine - Application Of Collateral Estoppel From An Administrative Hearing To A Civil Action, Jennifer R. Minter

Duquesne Law Review

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court held that, given the fast and informal nature of unemployment compensation proceedings, as well as the economic risk in those actions, a factual finding made during an unemployment compensation hearing should not be afforded preclusive effect in a subsequent civil action brought by the same employee.

The Law Of Civil Commitment In Pennsylvania: Towards A Consistent Interpretation Of The Mental Health Procedures Act, Steven B. Datlof Jan 1999

The Law Of Civil Commitment In Pennsylvania: Towards A Consistent Interpretation Of The Mental Health Procedures Act, Steven B. Datlof

Duquesne Law Review

Pennsylvania courts inconsistently interpret the Pennsylvania Mental Health Procedures Act, which governs the issue of whether a doctor can recommend that an individual be involuntarily committed to the psychiatric ward of a hospital. The author submits that mental health review officers in urban centers tend to interpret the statute's "clear and present danger standard" much more narrowly than do officers in rural centers. The author proposes a consistent interpretation based on the plain language of the statute, such that the clear and present danger need not always be evidenced by threats of harm and acts in furtherance of those threats.

Duquesne Law Review

The Supreme Court of the United States held that a plaintiff does not have to prove that a hospital acted with an improper motive when seeking recovery for alleged violations of EMTALAs stabilization requirement because the language of the statute does not support such a test.
