A Comparison Of Public Agency And Casino Employee Turnover Rates In Las Vegas, Timothy A. Clemens Nov 1999

A Comparison Of Public Agency And Casino Employee Turnover Rates In Las Vegas, Timothy A. Clemens

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The primary focus of this professional paper is to determine and then compare turnover rates between public agencies and the gaming industry in the Las Vegas area. The paper's intention is to discover what differences and similarities in employee turnover rates exist between public agencies and casinos. A secondary focus is to determine if the public sector can provide any lessons to lower employee turnover to the Las Vegas gaming industry. This secondary focus is based on the assumption that public agencies have higher employee retention (and, therefore, a lower rate of turnover) than those found within the Las Vegas …

Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano Nov 1999

Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano

Student Work

Communication and migration are tied through the common concept of community. Communication is the nervous system of a community, transmitting shared ideals, goals, and norms among citizens. Communication also is the process by which a community projects its identity or image to the outside world to attract new individuals who will nourish it economically and socially. Despite this deep connection between communication and community, migration research seldom incorporates communication theory. Likewise, communication scholars rarely look at the process of migration. The purpose of this thesis was to establish those theoretical links between communication and migration, look at how communication has …

Zoning Speech On The Internet: A Legal And Technical Model, Lawrence Lessig, Paul Resnick Nov 1999

Zoning Speech On The Internet: A Legal And Technical Model, Lawrence Lessig, Paul Resnick

Michigan Law Review

Speech, it is said, divides into three sorts - (1) speech that everyone has a right to (political speech, speech about public affairs); (2) speech that no one has a right to (obscene speech, child porn); and (3) speech that some have a right to but others do not (in the United States, Ginsberg speech, or speech that is "harmful to minors," to which adults have a right but kids do not). Speech-protective regimes, on this view, are those where category (1) speech predominates; speech-repressive regimes are those where categories (2) and (3) prevail. This divide has meaning for speech …

Kronos: A Java-Based Software System For The Processing And Retrieval Of Large Scale Avhrr Data, Z. Zhang, J. Jájá, D.A. Bader, S. Kalluri, H. Song, N.Z. El Saleous, E. Vermote, J.R.G. Townshend

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

At regional scales, satellite-based sensors are the primary source of information to study the earths environment, as they provide the needed dynamic temporal view of the earth's surface. Raw satellite orbit data have to be processed and mapped into a standard projection to produce multitemporal data sets which can then be used for regional or global earth science studies. In this paper, we describe a software system Kronos for the generation of custom-tailored data products from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor. Kronos allows the generation of a rich set of products that can be easily specified through …

A Free Trade Agreement Between The United States And Mexico: The Right Choice, Jesus Silva, Richard K. Dunn Nov 1999

A Free Trade Agreement Between The United States And Mexico: The Right Choice, Jesus Silva, Richard K. Dunn

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, Messrs. Silva and Dunn demonstrate that the intended Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United States and Mexico is a natural and necessary step in the two countries' economic relations. Their approach is to trace the steps which have led to the FTA and to analyze the evolution and progression of Mexican economic, legal, and political polices which have reached a point permitting and necessitating a trade pact. An agreement between the two countries is both logical and compelled though it will have permanent consequences and potential obstacles. Nevertheless, the agreement must be implemented and with an …

A La Conquista, Carlos Ruiz-Valarino Nov 1999

A La Conquista, Carlos Ruiz-Valarino

Theses

This thesis paper is an integral and complementary part of my thesis exhibition "A la conquista . . .” Its purpose is to enhance my audience's understanding of the interests and vicissitudes that have motivated me to undertake such a challenging task. This project has its origin in an earlier autobiographical photographic project. Through it I developed an interest in visually questioning aspects related to my past and present: How did I become the individual I am? And what aspects of my experience define my identity? My parents are of different nationalities, I was born in Puerto Rico, and then …
