Virginia Commonwealth University's Program For K-6 And 6-8 Teachers: The Interdisciplinary B.S. In Science, R. W. Farley
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has very recently revised its requirements for the K-6 Certification to include a total of 21 hours in mathematics and science as well as a three credit hour methods course in mathematics and science. This requirement includes a physical science and a biological science course, each with a laboratory component, a contemporary mathematics course with extensive student projects, collaborative work and applications, a statistics course and interdisciplinary science and mathematics course. We believe that as students complete these requirements they will meet the new State K-6 licensure requirements in all areas, with the exception of geometry. …

[Review Of] Gustavo Leclerc, Raúl Villa, And Michael J. Dear (Eds.). Urban Latino Cultures: La Vida Latina En La., Catherine S. Ramirez

Throughout the twentieth century (and now the twenty-first), the specter of a Latina/o past, present, and future has haunted the myth of Los Angeles as a sunny, bucolic paradise. At the same time it has loomed behind narratives of the city as a dystopic, urban nightmare. In the 1940s Carey McWilliams pointed to the fabrication of a "Spanish fantasy heritage" that made Los Angeles the bygone home of fair señoritas, genteel caballeros and benevolent mission padres. Meanwhile, the dominant Angeleno press invented a "zoot" (read Mexican-American) crime wave. Unlike the aristocratic, European Californias/os of lore, the Mexican/American "gangsters" of the …

Multi-User Domain Object Oriented (Moo) As A High School Procedure For Foreign Language Acquisition, James A. Backer
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Foreign language students experience added difficulty when they are isolated from native speakers and from the culture of the target language. It has been posited that MOOs (Multiuser domain Object Oriented) may help to overcome the geographical isolation of these students. MOOs are Internet-based virtual worlds in which people from all over the real world meet for synchronous textual conversations and can interact with asynchronous textual objects found there. Students who enjoy a MOO site may identify with its virtual target language community and find integrative motivation which the literature suggests is necessary for advanced language acquisition.

Humanist Ethics And Political Justice: Soto, Sepúlveda, And The "Affair Of The Indies", G. Scott Davis
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
In the debate over Spanish treatment of the natives of the New World, both sides regularly invoked Aristotle on natural slaves. This paper argues that the interpretation of the Spanish Dominican Domingo de Soto displays a greater understanding of Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition of justice than that of Juan Gines de Sepúlveda, the Spanish Humanist. The paper goes on to argue that it is the humanist tradition itself that disposes Sepúlveda to misconstrue Aristotle and the tradition of political justice.

For far too long, too many educational environments have been schooling environments focused on teacher- delivered and student-received information rather than learning environments focused on teacher- facilitated and student-generated knowledge. This must change. Young people are capable of extraordinary achievements and significant contributions, and it is the responsibility of educators, parents, taxpayers, policymakers and the business community to provide learning environments that make this possible. With your continuing support, IMSA will work continuously, diligently and resolutely to model and help others become such a learning environment.

Population Weights In The International Order, Geoffrey Mcnicoll
Population Weights In The International Order, Geoffrey Mcnicoll
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Population relativities play little part in the international system. A nation’s economic and military power is influenced by population size, but as one factor among many. Formal relations among states exclude population from consideration by the principle of sovereign equality. Three sources of possible change in this situation are explored, in which states would be “population-weighted” to a greater degree than before. Convergence of productivity levels around the world, expected by many, would bring the economic and population rankings of states more into line. Such convergence is occurring, but selectively and for the most part quite slowly. Anticipation of its …

A Comparison Of Wildlife Control And Cattle Vaccination As Methods For The Control Of Bovine Tuberculosis, R. R. Kao, M. G. Roberts
A Comparison Of Wildlife Control And Cattle Vaccination As Methods For The Control Of Bovine Tuberculosis, R. R. Kao, M. G. Roberts
Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
The Australian brushtail possum is the major source of infection for new cases of bovine tuberculosis in cattle in New Zealand. Using hypothetical values for the cost of putative cattle and possum Tb vaccines, the relative efforts required to eradicate Tb in cattle using possum culling, possum vaccination or cattle vaccination are compared. For realistic assumed costs for 1080 poison bait, possum culling is found to be a cost-effective strategy compared to cattle vaccination if the required control area is below 13 ha per cattle herd, while possum vaccination is cost-effective for control areas of less than 3 ha per …

Isolates Of Uromyces Appendiculatus With Specific Virulence To Landraces Of Phaseolus Vulgaris Of Andean Origin, Craig M. Sandlin, James R. Steadman, Carlos M. Araya, Dermot P. Coyne
Isolates Of Uromyces Appendiculatus With Specific Virulence To Landraces Of Phaseolus Vulgaris Of Andean Origin, Craig M. Sandlin, James R. Steadman, Carlos M. Araya, Dermot P. Coyne
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Five isolates of the bean rust fungus Uromyces appendiculatus were shown to be specifically virulent on bean genotypes of Andean origin. This specificity was demonstrated by the virulence of five pairs of isolates on a differential set of 30 Phaseolus vulgaris landraces. Each isolate pair was from a different country in the Americas and consisted of one Andean-specific isolate and one nonspecific isolate. Of the differential P. vulgaris landraces, 15 were of Middle American origin and 15 were of Andean origin. The Andean-specific rust isolates were highly virulent on Andean landraces but not on landraces of Middle American origin. …

White Privilege And Affirmative Action, Sylvia A. Law
White Privilege And Affirmative Action, Sylvia A. Law
Faculty Articles
As we approach the new century, the Nation is at a critical juncture with respect to race relations and the law. For the past two decades “affirmative action” has been the central mechanism through which we have promoted racial integration, and, at the same time, a central issue of controversy. Since 1996, many authoritative voices challenge the legitimacy of affirmative efforts to achieve racial integration. The Supreme Court has struck down many affirmative action programs. The Court has not upheld any affirmative action program since 1989, when, by a 5-4 decision, it approved a narrowly targeted Congressional program to encourage …

Searching For The Structural Vision Of City Of Boerne V. Flores: Vertical And Horizontal Tensions In The New Constitutional Architecture, Thomas W. Beimers
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
During the Rehnquist Court, America has witnessed accelerating federal judicial activism on behalf of States' rights, and a judicial branch that increasingly views itself as final arbiter of the proper allocation of power between the federal and State governments. Apologists for this trend identify it closely with perceived structural checks embedded in the Constitution, which are designed to ensure greater participatory access in self-governance. Despite this laudable goal, federalism-based precedents appear to conflict with civil rights legislation, such as the Americans With Disabilities Act and the Age Discrimination In Employment Act.
This article attempts to reconcile this apparent conflict by …
