The Changing Form And Function Of Claisebrook - East Perth, Graeme R. O'Neill Jan 1999

The Changing Form And Function Of Claisebrook - East Perth, Graeme R. O'Neill

Theses : Honours

This study will focus on the changing social function and form of Claisebrook, East Perth, and will show how the area has geographically changed over time. This research will also examine the significance of the area to the Aboriginal people and focus on the settlement and land use patterns from the 1830's to the 1990's. It will then elucidate the characteristics attributable to a sense of place, and link these to the physical and urban environment throughout different periods of time. Finally, this study will concentrate on the current redevelopment, investigating the current form and function of the area. It …

The Death Of Edward Mcmurty, David J. Wishart Jan 1999

The Death Of Edward Mcmurty, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Edward McMurty would have been lost to history if it hadn't been for the way he died and for what it meant in frontier Nebraska. McMurty's bloated body was found on 20 June 1869 in a pond on an island in the Platte River, about five miles from the town of Columbus (Fig. 1). He had been missing for six weeks. His body had been tethered to a large log and weighted down in the water. But distant snowmelts in the Rocky Mountains and a torrential Nebraska downpour on June 19th swelled the Platte, which flowed onto the island, flooding …

Review Of Satanta: The Life And Death Of A War Chief. By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Benjamin R. Kracht Jan 1999

Review Of Satanta: The Life And Death Of A War Chief. By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Benjamin R. Kracht

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Set-t' ainte, or "White Bear," whose name was Anglicized into Satanta, was one of the most feared Southern Plains warriors and raiders in the mid-nineteenth century. Robinson's biography of Satanta also remembered as the "Orator of the Plains"-grew out of the author's research into the history of Fort Richardson and the May 1871 killing of seven teamsters outside the nearby town of Jacksboro, Texas. White Bear and Big Tree, the two Kiowa warriors held responsible for the teamsters' deaths, were the first American Indian leaders to be tried in a civil court (State of Texas v. Satanta and Big …

Community Dreaming In The Rural Northwest The Montana Study, 1944-47, Philip J. Nelson Jan 1999

Community Dreaming In The Rural Northwest The Montana Study, 1944-47, Philip J. Nelson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

On 28 April 1944, three intellectuals, each representing the views of different regions of the country, met in Chicago and laid the basis for an experimental program in adult education and community outreach. Ernest Melby, the newly appointed chancellor of the University of Montana system of higher education, Baker Brownell, a respected Northwestern University philosophy professor and leading advocate of the small community, and David Stevens, head of the Humanities Division of the Rockefeller Foundation agreed on the shape of a community action project that would later be called the Montana Study. They brought together the concerns and needs of …

Multilife Premium Calculation With Dependent Future Lifetimes, Michel Denuit, Anne Cornet Jan 1999

Multilife Premium Calculation With Dependent Future Lifetimes, Michel Denuit, Anne Cornet

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Actuaries traditionally have calculated multi-life (joint life) premiums by assuming the independence of the future lifetimes of insured persons. Recent studies, however, demonstrate dependence of the future lifetimes of couples (such as husbands and wives). This dependence materially affects the values of multi-life annuities and insurances. Using the Frechet-Hoeffding bounds and Norberg's Markov model, we determine the effect of this dependence in lifetimes on the actuarial present values of a widow's pension benefit.

A Matter Of Prostitution: Becoming Respectable, Beverly Balos, Mary Louise Fellows Jan 1999

A Matter Of Prostitution: Becoming Respectable, Beverly Balos, Mary Louise Fellows

Articles

Feminists have achieved significant antiviolence legal reforms in the areas of domestic abuse, sexual harassment, and rape over the past three decades. These reforms, however, have reinforced old borders between the traditional categories of violence and prostitution and have constructed new borders by maintaining the distinction between worthy and unworthy women. Despite these flaws, the law reform efforts have the capacity to transform the legal and social meaning of prostitution. By adopting an approach that transcends consent or coercion and private or public, Professors Fellows and Balos use the concept of respectability to introduce an analytically powerful framework for rethinking …

Prospectus For Information Ecology, John R. Stepp Jan 1999

Prospectus For Information Ecology, John R. Stepp

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Information Ecology (hereafter IE) is a field of inquiry being developed, in part, by members of the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia (Appendix A). The following prospectus represents a work in progress and is the latest incarnation in a series of revisions since the first IE prospectus was developed in 1990 (Appendix B). The purpose of the prospectus is not to bound what is, admittedly, an eclectic mode of investigation, but rather to outline a field of inquiry that is inherently multidisciplinary and seeks theoretical complementarity both among disparate fields and levels of analysis. The goals are as follows: …

Transit Gis Applications In Fairfax County, Virginia, Wenyu Jia, Brendan Ford Jan 1999

Transit Gis Applications In Fairfax County, Virginia, Wenyu Jia, Brendan Ford

Journal of Public Transportation

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (DOT) manages a fixed-route bus system (the Fairfax Connector) that encompasses 58 routes. To better support the planning, operation, and marketing of this bus system, the Fairfax County DOT and the Fairfax County Department of Information Technology formed a team to develop a pilot project of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) transit applications. These applications would serve as a demonstration to facilitate automation, analysis, accessing, and plotting of transit data. To be successful, the applications had to be cost effective and match users' technical needs with their abilities. Paramount to the success of this project …

A Transit Access Analysis Of Tanf Recipients In Portland, Oregon, Thomas W. Sanchez Jan 1999

A Transit Access Analysis Of Tanf Recipients In Portland, Oregon, Thomas W. Sanchez

Journal of Public Transportation

Little evidence exists regarding the relationship between transit service availability and the ability of welfare recipients to find stable employment. While policymakers continue to assert that increased public transit mobility can positively affect employment status, there is little empirical evidence to support this theory. It is generally assumed that public transit can effectively link unemployed, carless persons with appropriate job locations. From these assumptions stems the common belief that if adequate transit were available, the likelihood of being employed would increase. Hence, the call for more transit services to assist moving welfare recipients to gainful employment. Current available evidence is …

Stakeholder Preferences In Advanced Public Transportation System Planning, Jonathan Levine, Soonae Park, Steven E. Underwood, Richard R. Wallace Jan 1999

Stakeholder Preferences In Advanced Public Transportation System Planning, Jonathan Levine, Soonae Park, Steven E. Underwood, Richard R. Wallace

Journal of Public Transportation

Transportation planning in general and planning/or intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in particular are notable both for multiple goals and for multiple constituencies. In response to complex policy environments such as this, multicriteria decision analysis often was utilized to assist in the evaluation of alternative investments or policy directions. This approach is extended here to assess stakeholder valuation of broad goals of an ITS planning process, the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) operational field test in the metropolitan Detroit area. Two levels of goals were considered: broad system-wide goals (e.g., energy savings, interagency coordination, congestion reduction) and specific service …
