Anne Frank: From Shared Experiences To A Posthumous Literary Bond, Laureen Nussbaum Jan 1999

Anne Frank: From Shared Experiences To A Posthumous Literary Bond, Laureen Nussbaum

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Anne Frank is the best known victim of the Nazis, the representative of all the Jewish children murdered by them. She has become an icon, the heroine of a romanticized play and a subsequent film that made her name a household word all over the world and, at least in this country, the object of heated debates about her putative Jewishness or the lack thereof. While she has risen to fame as a symbol, her talent and her aspirations as a writer have generally not been taken seriously. However, the editor of a recent anthology, Women Writing in Dutch, published …

Collision At Sea: The Irreconcilability Of The Superseding Cause And Pure Comparative Fault Doctrines In Admiralty, Kelsey L. Joyce Hooke Jan 1999

Collision At Sea: The Irreconcilability Of The Superseding Cause And Pure Comparative Fault Doctrines In Admiralty, Kelsey L. Joyce Hooke

Washington Law Review

Courts have long sought to develop rational methods both for limiting a tortfeasor's liability and allocating damages among multiple tortfeasors. Courts developed the doctrine of proximate cause to address the first concern, employing superseding cause analysis when multiple forces produce an injury. In admiralty, the U.S. Supreme Court resolved the second concern by adopting pure comparative fault in . In Exxon Co. v. Sofec, Inc., the Court endorsed the continued use of superseding cause in admiralty cases, holding that it does not conflict with pure comparative fault. This Comment argues that the Sofec Court's method of superseding cause analysis …

The Effects Of Personality Characteristics And Stress On Physical Illness, Carly A. Andersen Jan 1999

The Effects Of Personality Characteristics And Stress On Physical Illness, Carly A. Andersen

Honors Projects

Recent research has indicated that personality characteristics and stress may influence the incidence of illness (Dreher, 1995). The majority of studies have examined personality characteristics and stress in acutely and chronically ill populations. However, this phenomenon has not been extensively studied in healthy populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among personality characteristics, subjective stress, and physical illness in a sample of undergraduate students. This study tested a moderator model in which personality characteristics interact with stress to influence the incidence of physical illness using hierarchical multiple regression. Study participants included 55 undergraduate students selected from …

Completing The Demographic Transition, John Bongaarts, Rodolfo A. Bulatao Jan 1999

Completing The Demographic Transition, John Bongaarts, Rodolfo A. Bulatao

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Despite ongoing declines in fertility in many countries, the population of the world is experiencing a period of rapid expansion, and its size is expected to exceed 10 billion by the end of the demographic transition. Three causes of this growth are identified and quantified: 1) fertility above the replacement level of two surviving children per woman, 2) continuing declines in mortality, and 3) population momentum resulting from a young age structure. A set of simple analytic expressions is proposed for estimating these factors from standard demographic indicators. Population momentum is shown to be the main cause of future growth …

National Collecting Trends: Collection Analysis Methods And Findings, Anna H. Perrault Jan 1999

National Collecting Trends: Collection Analysis Methods And Findings, Anna H. Perrault

School of Information Faculty Publications

The primary focus of collection evaluation and assessment has been the subjective judgment of the strengths and weaknesses of library collections. The process has generally been a local application, often utilizing peer group comparative data. Quantitative collection analysis to support the subjective processes of collection evaluation and assessment is now almost universally conducted through extraction of data from local systems or network databases. National collecting patterns can be studied through the use of data extracted from the bibliographic utilities. This article examines the use of data from the OCLC/AMIGOS Collection Analysis CD and standard statistical series as a methodology for …

Annual Reports

For far too long, too many educational environments have been schooling environments focused on teacher- delivered and student-received information rather than learning environments focused on teacher- facilitated and student-generated knowledge. This must change. Young people are capable of extraordinary achievements and significant contributions, and it is the responsibility of educators, parents, taxpayers, policymakers and the business community to provide learning environments that make this possible. With your continuing support, IMSA will work continuously, diligently and resolutely to model and help others become such a learning environment.

The View From The Bottomless Pit: Truth, Myth, And Irony In A Civil Action, Jerome P. Facher Jan 1999

The View From The Bottomless Pit: Truth, Myth, And Irony In A Civil Action, Jerome P. Facher

Seattle University Law Review

This Article offers the observations, analysis, and commentary of Beatrice's chief trial counsel about some of the important issues and rulings in Anderson, the accuracy of the events reported in A Civil Action, and the misimpressions created by the book's undoubted tilt in the plaintiffs' direction. Wherever possible, this Article's effort to balance the scales relies on court records, trial and hearing transcripts, and on other actual trial materials in Anderson to present the relevant facts and events in the context in which they arose. Contrary to the erroneous impression of justice gone astray created by the book …
