Adolescent Females As Participants In Service Learning And Their Moral, Social, And Political Ideologies: A Case Study, Allison R. Erickson
Adolescent Females As Participants In Service Learning And Their Moral, Social, And Political Ideologies: A Case Study, Allison R. Erickson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Service learning programs have been increasingly more popular among social service agencies and academic institutions. Service learning curriculum are being adopted through efforts to provide for adolescents the opportunities to foster responsible character traits and to also prevent anti-social or health-compromising behavior. There has been considerable research regarding service learning and adolescence, however, little research is available on how the adolescents themselves perceive the effect their service learning experience has on themselves. I conducted a qualitative study exploring adolescent girls' understanding of the effect their community service experience had on their moral, social and political values. My research consisted of …

Edmund S. Muskie Oral History Collection
Lionel A. “Lal” Lemieux was born in Augusta, Maine on January 23, 1911 to Quebecois immigrant parents. He was the tenth of twelve children, the first of two to graduate from high school, and the only one to attend college. He graduated from Cony High School in 1928 and from Bates College in 1933, majoring in history and government. He also debated under Brooks Quimby, and was a senior when Ed Muskie was a freshman. He began his career at Western Union, and worked throughout New England. In 1940, he took a position with the Lewiston Evening Journal, and covered …

Northwest Tribal Registry--Seattle Indian Health Board Record Linkage Project., J. Bettles, D. Robertson, F.C. Romero, T. Becker, P. Stehr-Green
Native Health Database Full Text
In the last ten years several reports using a variety of health data sets have shown a high proportion of racial misclassification for Northwest American Indians and Alaskan Natives (AI/ANs). The result of this has been an underestimation of the burden of various diseases among Northwest AI/ANs. To address health issues related to misclassification, the Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center has developed the Northwest Tribal Registry (NTR), which contains a demographic data set of 135,060 Northwest AI/ANs, and which can be used for record linkage studies to ascertain accurate disease rates for Northwest AI/ANs.

Evaluating Maximum Likelihood Estimation Methods To Determine The Hurst Coefficient, Christina Marie Kendziorski, J. B. Bassingthwaighte, Peter J. Tonellato
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
A maximum likelihood estimation method implemented in S-PLUS (S-MLE) to estimate the Hurst coefficient (H) is evaluated. The Hurst coefficient, with 0.5<HS-MLE was developed to estimate H for fractionally differenced (fd) processes. However, in practice it is difficult to distinguish between fd processes and fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) processes. Thus, the method is evaluated for estimating H for both fd and fGn processes. S-MLE gave biased results of H for fGn processes of any length and for fd processes of lengths less than 210. A modified method is proposed to correct for …

Generalized Averages For Solutions Of Two-Point Dirichlet Problems, Philip Korman, Yi Li
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
For very general two-point boundary value problems we show that any positive solution satisfies a certain integral relation. As a consequence we obtain some new uniqueness and multiplicity results.

Rkky Interactions Between Nanomagnets Of Arbitrary Shape, Ralph Skomski
Rkky Interactions Between Nanomagnets Of Arbitrary Shape, Ralph Skomski
Ralph Skomski Publications
The RKKY interaction between well-separated magnetic particles in a nonmagnetic metallic matrix is calculated. It turns out that the net interaction can be mapped onto an RKKY interaction between two point-like effective moments. The effective moments exhibit a strongly oscillating dependence on the particle's size, shape, and orientation, but their magnitudes are governed by scaling laws. As a rule, magnetostatic interactions tend to suppress the RKKY effect in particles larger than about 1 nm. Surface roughness leaves the effective-moment picture unaltered but tends to yield a moderate reduction of the effective moments. The results are discussed in the context of …

Dartmouth Scholarship
A screen for mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae secretory pathway components previously yielded sec34, a mutant that accumulates numerous vesicles and fails to transport proteins from the ER to the Golgi complex at the restrictive temperature (Wuestehube, L.J., R. Duden, A. Eun, S. Hamamoto, P. Korn, R. Ram, and R. Schekman. 1996. Genetics. 142:393–406). We find that SEC34 encodes a novel protein of 93-kD, peripherally associated with membranes. The temperature-sensitive phenotype of sec34-2 is suppressed by the rab GTPase Ypt1p that functions early in the secretory pathway, or by the dominant form of the ER to Golgi complex target-SNARE …

United States V. Morrison, Et Al.: Brief Of Law Professors As Amici Curiae In Support Of Petitioners, Evan H. Caminker, Catharine A. Mackinnon, Christina B. Whitman
Appellate Briefs
Interests of the Amici Curiae: This case brings into play two of our basic constitutional commitments: first, to a federal system that both guarantees the States a major role and gives Congress broad responsibility over interstate commerce, and second, to a nationwide guarantee that all persons enjoy the equal protection of the laws. Amici, law professors (identified in an addendum below) who teach and write about constitutional law, the federal courts or jurisprudence, will discuss how the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) civil rights remedy is an apt response to the combined demands of these constitutional commitments.
