Design Approaches To Model-Based Simulation In Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction, Bjoern Helfesrieder, Venky Shankararaman Sep 1999

Design Approaches To Model-Based Simulation In Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction, Bjoern Helfesrieder, Venky Shankararaman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model-based simulation systems have been created in various fields of engineering to train personnel or students in operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of complex devices and systems. A review of literature indicates a lack of good overviews of the approaches to system design of model-based training simulations in Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction (ICAI). Though single systems have to some extent been evaluated with regard to their performance, an organised evaluation, especially a comparative evaluation of the systems that have been created within the field is lacking. To be able to successfully conduct an in-depth review under these conditions, we concentrate and …

Reparable Inventory Reduction: Impacts On Air Force Fighter Aicraft Mission Capability, Gregory E. Hutson Sep 1999

Reparable Inventory Reduction: Impacts On Air Force Fighter Aicraft Mission Capability, Gregory E. Hutson

Theses and Dissertations

During the 1990's the Air Force experienced severe declines in serviceable inventory levels and a rise in their TNMCS rates. Air Force predictions of TNMCS hours during this time period did not account for the upward trend in TNMCS rates. The Air Force uses a regression equation, consisting of possessed hours, flying hours, and sorties, to predict TNMCS hours. This research, through simple linear regression, found a significant relationship between serviceable inventory levels and TNMCS rates for 8 of the 10 aircraft studied. Using this relationship, serviceable inventory levels were then added to the Air Force equations and new multiple …

Americanization And Cultural Preservation In Seattle's Settlement House: A Jewish Adaptation Of The Anglo-American Model Of Settlement Work, Alissa Schwartz Sep 1999

Americanization And Cultural Preservation In Seattle's Settlement House: A Jewish Adaptation Of The Anglo-American Model Of Settlement Work, Alissa Schwartz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article examines the dual agendas of Americanization and preservation of Ashkenazic Jewish culture through an historical analysis of the work of Seattle's Settlement House, a social service center founded in 1906 by elite, Americanized Jews to serve poorer, immigrant Jews of Ashkenazic and Sephardic origin. Such analysis is set against the ideological backdrop of Anglo-Americanism which pervaded the field of social work in its early efforts at self-definition and professionalization.P articulara ttentioni s paid to the role of the arts at Settlement House, with comparisons to Chicago's Hull-House, the prototypical American settlement operating at the turn of the century. …

The Place Of Historical Research In Social Work, Robert Fisher, Phillip Dybicz Sep 1999

The Place Of Historical Research In Social Work, Robert Fisher, Phillip Dybicz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study addresses the incidence, persistence, decline, and marginalization of historical research in social work by examining one indicator of that research, social work dissertations. This study reveals that despite the dominance of other research methods, historical research was a legitimate method for doctoral research in social work, but its use has declined over time. Before World War II historical dissertations were common. Through the 1950s almost 13% of all social work dissertations were historical. In the 1960s and 1970s interest in history as a research method declined, but social welfare history was still a legitimate option for doctoral research. …

Fine-Grain Period Adaptation In Soft Real-Time Environments, David Steere, Joshua Gruenberg, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole Sep 1999

Fine-Grain Period Adaptation In Soft Real-Time Environments, David Steere, Joshua Gruenberg, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reservation-based scheduling delivers a proportion of the CPU to jobs over a period of time. In this paper we argue that automatically determining and assigning this period is both possible and useful in general purpose soft real-time environments such as personal computers and information appliances. The goal of period adaptation is to select the period over which a job is guaranteed to receive its portion of the CPU dynamically and automatically. The choice of period represents a trade-off between the amount of jitter observed by the job and the overall efficiency of the system. Secondary effects of period include quantization …

Qos Scalability For Streamed Media Delivery, Charles Krasic, Jonathan Walpole Sep 1999

Qos Scalability For Streamed Media Delivery, Charles Krasic, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Applications with real-rate progress requirements, such as mediastreaming systems, are difficult to deploy in shared heterogenous environments such as the Internet. On the Internet, mediastreaming systems must be capable of trading off resource requirements against the quality of the media streams they deliver, in order to match wide-ranging dynamic variations in bandwidth between servers and clients. Since quality requirements tend to be user- and task-specific, mechanisms for capturing quality of service requirements and mapping them to appropriate resource-level adaptation policies are required. In this paper, we describe a general approach for automatically mapping user-level quality of service specifications onto resource …

Detection And Robustness Of Digital Image Watermarking Signals : A Communication Theory Approach, George F. Elmasry Aug 1999

Detection And Robustness Of Digital Image Watermarking Signals : A Communication Theory Approach, George F. Elmasry

Dissertations

The detection and robustness of the watermark signal is studied from a communications point of view. The contributions of this dissertation are presented in two parts. The first part, which covers the detection aspect, introduces a new digital image watermarking approach that embeds meaningful information in a copyright protection watermark signal; demonstrates the need to approach the watermark signal as a power-constrained signal; studies the relationship between the watermark signal dimension and the image capacity to the signal; explains the similarities and differences between detecting the watermark signal and detecting a signal over a spread-spectrum communication channel; and analyzes the …

Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien Aug 1999

Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien

Theses

The perfect and precise surgical cut, similar to today's laser one, is very important in many surgeries, especially in dissection and to recanaize arterial occlusive lessions. Causing no coagulation is one of the advantages of water jet because it generates no heat. It also provides omni-directional cutting capabilities at very high speeds, resulting edge quality that is usually superior to other existing conventional cutting processes. Debris is always carried away from incisions by jet stream and less damaged tissue, than mechanical incisions. In addition, water jet exerts minimal contact pressure on the tissue being cut due to the small diameter …

Measurements Of The Effects Of Colored Light On The Body, Lynne Hendrickson Aug 1999

Measurements Of The Effects Of Colored Light On The Body, Lynne Hendrickson

Theses

Colored light is used in movies, restaurants, and other situations to create particular environments. It creates a mood and sets a stage for specific events.

This study used colored light to create relaxation and stress in order to evaluate physiological reactions in the human body. In all four studies of this paper, EEG, EKG, and peripheral blood flow were recorded and observed and in the latter two studies peripheral temperature and conductance were also recorded. An audio stressor was introduced in the first three studies to evaluate the stability of the altered mood of the individuals.

Considerable mood alterations were …

Biomechanical Study Of Performance Of A Plugged Femoral Implant Coupled With A Trochanter Cable System Using Finite Element Analysis, Deanna Yvonne Carstarphen Aug 1999

Biomechanical Study Of Performance Of A Plugged Femoral Implant Coupled With A Trochanter Cable System Using Finite Element Analysis, Deanna Yvonne Carstarphen

Theses

A Finite Element Analysis was conducted to determine the effect of a plug on the performance of the critical section of a femoral implant coupled with a trochanter cable grip system. The critical section was defined near the proximal end of the stem where a hole was designed for the purpose of attaching the cable grip system. Two models were generated for the analysis. One consisted of the critical section with the grip cables and a plug filled in the hole and the other was without the plug. The models were based on design specifications provided by Howmedica Incorporated. Two …
