Reservation-based scheduling delivers a proportion of the CPU to jobs over a period of time. In this paper we argue that automatically determining and assigning this period is both possible and useful in general purpose soft real-time environments such as personal computers and information appliances. The goal of period adaptation is to select the period over which a job is guaranteed to receive its portion of the CPU dynamically and automatically. The choice of period represents a trade-off between the amount of jitter observed by the job and the overall efficiency of the system. Secondary effects of period include quantization …
A Review Of Automated Stellar Spectral Classification And Surveys, Ted Von Hippel, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones
A Review Of Automated Stellar Spectral Classification And Surveys, Ted Von Hippel, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones
Publications
Modern spectroscopic surveys and automated classifiers are becoming so inextricably linked that it is difficult even to summarize one without discussing the other. Some of the automated classifiers are being built because of current analysis needs, though with a clear anticipation of future, larger surveys. Other automated classifiers are being designed specifically for future surveys. Automated classifiers may be applied to databases already in hand, to real-time analysis at the telescope, or one day to on-board satellite analysis where the raw data are too bulky to save and transmit. In addition, many current spectroscopic surveys target galaxies. These surveys may …

Criminalizing Money Laundering As A Method And Means Of Curbing Corruption, Organized Crime, And Capital Flight In Russia, Sam Chung
Washington International Law Journal
In the wake of the post-Soviet privatization in the Russian Federation, corruption and organized crime have flourished, contributing to capital flight, economic instability, and the collapse of Russia's financial system. Over the same period, Russian legislators have worked to reform the legal system in order to facilitate their country's transition to democracy and the rule of law. In 1997, legislative efforts led to the enactment of a new criminal code that emphasizes the rights of the individual as opposed to the power of the government. More recently, several draft bills targeting money laundering activities and banking reform have been introduced …

America's Army In Transition: Preparing For War In The Precision Age, Robert H. Scales Major General

The following two articles were written during and immediately after the war in Kosovo. The first is an adaptation of an earlier work written after a trip to Asia in 1998. In that essay, I suggested that foreign militaries were beginning to perceive our fixation on a firepower-centered way of war as an exploitable weakness. In fact, some states, armed with experience gained against us in real war, had already begun to evolve a doctrine to counter our superiority in precision. These potential adversaries concluded that dispersion, deception, patience and a willingness to absorb punishment offered them the means to …

Qos Scalability For Streamed Media Delivery, Charles Krasic, Jonathan Walpole

Applications with real-rate progress requirements, such as mediastreaming systems, are difficult to deploy in shared heterogenous environments such as the Internet. On the Internet, mediastreaming systems must be capable of trading off resource requirements against the quality of the media streams they deliver, in order to match wide-ranging dynamic variations in bandwidth between servers and clients. Since quality requirements tend to be user- and task-specific, mechanisms for capturing quality of service requirements and mapping them to appropriate resource-level adaptation policies are required. In this paper, we describe a general approach for automatically mapping user-level quality of service specifications onto resource …
Acmaeodera Pubiventris Horn (Coleoptera: Buprestidae): A Polytypic Species Or A Superspecies?, Richard L. Wescott
Acmaeodera Pubiventris Horn (Coleoptera: Buprestidae): A Polytypic Species Or A Superspecies?, Richard L. Wescott
Insecta Mundi
Acmaeodera pubiventris Horn was studied in detail and, without rejecting that it may be a superspecies, I concluded it is a polytypic species comprised of A. p. pubiuentris, A. p. lanata Horn, A. p. yumae Knull-these generally have been considered as full species-and a new subspecies, A. p. panocheae, described herein. It is suggested that A. p. yumae could be a megasubspecies. Detailed comparisons are made, variation is discussed, and biological and distributional data are provided. A. p. lanata is recorded from Mexico (Baja California) for the first time.

We present a measurement of the mass difference Δmd of the two Bd0 mass eigenstates. We use a flavor tagging method based on the lepton charge, in a sample of events with two muons at low transverse momentum. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 90 pb-1 collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The result obtained is Dmd=0.503±0.064(stat) ±0.071(syst) ps-1.

Quasicoherent Nucleation Mode In Two-Phase Nanomagnets, Ralph Skomski, J. Ping Liu, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
Magnetization processes in advanced magnetic nanostructures are investigated. For the case of spherical soft or semihard grains surrounded by a very hard matrix a bulging nucleation mode is discovered. The bulging mode exhibits the radial angular symmetry of the coherent mode, but it is incoherent due to its radial variation. The radial dependence of the bulging mode is obtained by solving a spherical Bessel equation which is subject to appropriate boundary conditions. In contrast to the coherent mode, the bulging mode yields a nucleationfield coercivity which depends on the exchange stiffness and on the size of the grain. There is …

Evaluation Of Bond Using Frp Rods With Axisymmetric Deformations, Mesfer M. Al-Zahrani, Salah U. Al-Dulaijan, Antonio Nanni, Charles E. Bakis, Thomas E. Boothby
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents experimental results obtained with the direct pull-out test using machined and wrapped glass/vinyl ester, carbon/vinyl ester, and carbon/epoxy FRP rods with axisymmetric lugs. The typical results are given as nominal shear stress vs. free- and loaded-end slip. Experimental results obtained from strain probes used during the pull-out test are presented as shear stress vs. strain. Machined glass/vinyl ester FRP rods with embedded lengths including five and 10 lugs, and different lug widths and heights were studied. The failure mode consisted of the shearing off of the lugs without concrete damage. Four concrete mixtures with strengths ranging from …

Design Approaches To Model-Based Simulation In Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction, Bjoern Helfesrieder, Venky Shankararaman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Model-based simulation systems have been created in various fields of engineering to train personnel or students in operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of complex devices and systems. A review of literature indicates a lack of good overviews of the approaches to system design of model-based training simulations in Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction (ICAI). Though single systems have to some extent been evaluated with regard to their performance, an organised evaluation, especially a comparative evaluation of the systems that have been created within the field is lacking. To be able to successfully conduct an in-depth review under these conditions, we concentrate and …
