Quantized Systems With Randomly Corrugated Walls And Interfaces, A. E. Meyerovich, A. Stepaniants Sep 1999

Quantized Systems With Randomly Corrugated Walls And Interfaces, A. E. Meyerovich, A. Stepaniants

Physics Faculty Publications

Effect of scattering by random surface inhomogeneities on transport along the walls and localization in ultrathin systems is analyzed. A simple universal surface collision operator is derived outside of the quantum resonance domain. This operator contains all relevant information on statistical and geometrical characteristics of weak roughness and can be used as a general boundary condition on the corrugated surfaces. In effect, the boundary problem for the three-dimensional (3D) transport equation is replaced by the explicit matrix collision operator coupling a set of 2D transport equations. This operator is applied to a variety of systems including ultrathin films and channels …

Efficient Simulation Via Validation And Application Of An External Analytical Model, Thomas H. Irish Sep 1999

Efficient Simulation Via Validation And Application Of An External Analytical Model, Thomas H. Irish

Theses and Dissertations

This research makes significant contributions towards improving the efficiency of simulation studies using an external analytical model. The foundation for this research is the analytical control variate (ACV) method. The ACV method can produce significant variance reduction, but the resulting point estimate may exhibit bias. A Monte Carlo sampling method for resolving the bias problem is developed and demonstrated through a queueing network example. The method requires knowledge of the parameters and approximate distributions of the random variables used to produce the ACV. Often, some of these parameters or distributions are not known. Both parametric and non-parametric alternatives to the …

The Nursing Center In Concept And Practice: Delivery And Financing Issues In Serving Vulnerable People, Karen Matherlee

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief looks at ways in which nurse-managed centers — with support from the Health Resources and Services Administration and private foundations — are carving a role in providing preventive and primary care to vulnerable populations. Two case studies — one in Philadelphia and the other in the Utah-Nevada border area — llustrate nursing centers' mission, outreach, services, workforce, payment concerns, and educational tie-ins.

Univercity News (1999-09-13)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Measurement Of Oxygen Partial Pressure, Its Control During Hypoxia And Hyperoxia, And Its Effect Upon Light Emission In A Bioluminescent Elaterid Larva, G. S. Timmins, C. A. A. Penatti, E. J. H. Bechara, H. M. Swartz

Dartmouth Scholarship

This study investigates the respiratory physiology of bioluminescent larvae of Pyrearinus termitilluminans in relation to their tolerance to hypoxia and hyperoxia and to the supply of oxygen for bioluminescence. The partial pressure of oxygen (P(O2)) was measured within the bioluminescent prothorax by in vivo electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) oximetry following acclimation of larvae to hypoxic, normoxic and hyperoxic (normobaric) atmospheres and during periods of bioluminescence (during normoxia). The P(O2) in the prothorax during exposure to an external P(O2) of 15.2, 160 and 760 mmHg was 10.3+/-2.6, 134+/-0.9 and 725+/-73 mmHg respectively (mean +/- s.d., N=5; 1 mmHg=0.1333 kPa). Oxygen supply …

Evaluation Of The Use Of Optical Fiber Thermometers For Thermal Control Of The Quench Module Insert, Matthew R. Jones, Jeffery T. Farmer, Shawn P. Breeding Sep 1999

Evaluation Of The Use Of Optical Fiber Thermometers For Thermal Control Of The Quench Module Insert, Matthew R. Jones, Jeffery T. Farmer, Shawn P. Breeding

Faculty Publications

Issues regarding the use of optical fiber thermometers to control heater settings in a microgravity vacuum furnace are addressed. It is desirable to use these probes in environments such as the International Space Station, because they can be operated without re-calibration for extended periods. However, the analysis presented in this paper shows that temperature readings obtained using optical fiber thermometers can be corrupted by emissions from the fiber when extended portions of the probe are exposed to elevated temperatures.
