Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors Technology For Protection Of Machined Metal Parts During Storage And Distribution, Alexander Sobkin Jan 1999

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors Technology For Protection Of Machined Metal Parts During Storage And Distribution, Alexander Sobkin

Theses

The significant dollar losses that can occur when metallic products are damaged or lost, due to rust and corrosion, force many manufacturers to concentrate efforts on corrosion control and prevention during packaging, shipping and storage. Many people often simply accept corrosion as an inevitable problem. Actually, something can and should be done to prolong the life of many metals exposed to corrosive environments. Many of the standard methods to control corrosion, paint, grease and wax, for example, are messy, time consuming and expensive. These methods also pose a potential threat to the environment unless properly treated and disposed. An alternative …

Mechanical Properties Of Polystyrene And Polypropylene Based Materials After Exposure To Hydrogen Peroxide, John Torres Jan 1999

Mechanical Properties Of Polystyrene And Polypropylene Based Materials After Exposure To Hydrogen Peroxide, John Torres

Theses

This study addresses a specific problem faced by a company in the food industry, although all food companies face similar issues. In an effort to reduce costs, the pursuit to down-gauge packaging materials is constant. In the case of this study, the primary package of a dairy product is being considered for reduction from the current 57 mil thickness to 52 mils. In the past, as the material was down-gauged from 62 mils, a loss in material strength and an increase in damage were observed. Initial research into the issue by line personnel found that the increase in damage was …

The Steep Spectrum Quasar Pg1404+ 226 With Asca, Hst And Rosat, Marie-Helene Ulrich, Andrea Comastri, Stefanie Komossa, Phil Crane

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present and discuss our observations of the Narrow Line quasar PG1404+226 (zem = 0.098) with ASCA and HST, and a re-analysis of our earlier observa- tions with ROSAT. The soft X-ray spectrum is very steep and displays an absorption feature (edge or line at ∼ 1.1 keV). We have applied a variety of models to the ASCA and ROSAT spectra without finding a completely satis- factory fit, and the identification of the edge remains un- certain. A satisfactory fit of the ASCA spectrum assuming that the edge is produced by highly ionized iron (using the code absori in XSPEC) …

Using Data Envelopment Analysis For Evaluating Alternative Software Development Process Configurations, Timothy R. Anderson, Peter K. Ghavami Jan 1999

Using Data Envelopment Analysis For Evaluating Alternative Software Development Process Configurations, Timothy R. Anderson, Peter K. Ghavami

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Summary form only given as follows. The goal of achieving better software depends on improvements in software development processes. This paper provides a nonparametric, quantitative methodology for evaluating alternative software development process configurations as a tool for process improvement. The methodology uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) for comparing the impact of varying degrees of software inspection on project schedule, cost and quality. Since every phase of the development process can be inspected at varying levels, a large number of process combinations become possible. Thus a manager's job to compare and select an efficient process configuration can become tedious. This is …

Review Of La Imagen De Nuestros Músicos: Del Siglo De Oro A Edad De Plata, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

La imagen de nuestros músicos: Del Siglo de Oro a la Edad de Plata is a hefty compilation of 681 portraits of Spanish composers from the Renaissance to the present. The illustrations are organized in four large chapters: "Del siglo de oro a la ilustración", covers the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries; "El primer romanticismo" and "El segundo romanticismo", deal with the first and second half of the 19th century; the final section, "Los músicos de nuestro siglo" focuses on the 20th century. If my numbers are correct, the earliest composer included in the study is the polyphonist Cristóbal de …

Stravinsky's Serial "Mistakes", Joseph N. Straus Jan 1999

Stravinsky's Serial "Mistakes", Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

In 1952, after the completion of The Rake's Progress, Stravinsky embarked on a remarkable voyage of compositional discovery. His late works differ from his earlier ones in striking and profound ways. During the final two decades of his life, every major work was almost shockingly new, right down to original, and ever-changing, principles of structural formation. The works in this period describe a succession of compositional firsts, including his first works to use a series (Cantata [1952], Septet [ 1953], Three Songs from William Shakespeare [1954]); his first fully serial work (In Memoriam Dylan Thomas [1954]); his …

Orient Rural Center Plan: Community Wide Solutions, Patrick J. Boylan, David R. Brooks, Donald D. Kienholz, M. Joseph Turner

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

This document represents a chapter of the West of the Sandy River Rural Plan. The focus of this chapter addresses a smaller section within the study area which is zoned Rural Center (RC). In October, 1998 Community-Wide Solutions (CWS), a consulting team working with County staff, contracted to research, study, and draft a plan for the Orient Rural Center. The Orient Rural Center is an "unicorporated community" for which state law requires the County to plan (OAR 660-22).

This chapter of the West of the Sandy River Rural Area Plan examines the land uses, history and possible futures for the …

Geometrical Model For A Particle On A Rough Inclined Surface, Giovani L. Vasconcelos, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 1999

Geometrical Model For A Particle On A Rough Inclined Surface, Giovani L. Vasconcelos, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple geometrical model is presented for the gravity-driven motion of a single particle on a rough inclined surface. Adopting a simple restitution law for the collisions between the particle and the surface, we arrive at a model in which the dynamics is described by a one-dimensional map. This map is studied in detail and it is shown to exhibit several dynamical regimes (steady state, chaotic behavior, and accelerated motion) as the model parameters vary. A phase diagram showing the corresponding domain of existence for these regimes is presented. The model is also found to be in good qualitative agreement …

Constructive Induction Machines For Data Mining, Marek Perkowski, Stanislaw Grygiel, Qihong Chen, Dave Mattson Jan 1999

Constructive Induction Machines For Data Mining, Marek Perkowski, Stanislaw Grygiel, Qihong Chen, Dave Mattson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

"Learning Hardware" approach involves creating a computational network based on feedback from the environment (for instance, positive and negative examples from the trainer), and realizing this network in an array of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Computational networks can be built based on incremental supervised learning (Neural Net training) or global construction (Decision Tree design). Here we advocate the approach to Learning Hardware based on Constructive Induction methods of Machine Learning (ML) using multivalued functions. This is contrasted with the Evolvable Hardware (EHW) approach in which learning/evolution is based on the genetic algorithm only. Various approaches to supervised inductive learning …

Logic Synthesis For A Regular Layout, Marek Perkowski, Yang Xu, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske Jan 1999

Logic Synthesis For A Regular Layout, Marek Perkowski, Yang Xu, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

New algorithms for generating a regular two-dimensional layout representation for multi-output, incompletely specified Boolean functions, called, Pseudo-Symmetric Binary Decision Diagrams (PSBDDs), are presented. The regular structure of the function representation allows accurate prediction of post-layout areas and delays before the layout is physically generated. It simplifies power estimation on the gate level and allows for more accurate power optimization. The theoretical background of the new diagrams, which are based on ideas from contact networks, and the form of decision diagrams for symmetric functions is discussed. PSBDDs are especially well suited for deep sub-micron technologies where the delay of interconnections limits …

The Fruits Of Our Labors: An Empirical Study Of The Distribution Of Income And Job Satisfaction Across The Legal Profession, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt, Kaushik Mukhopadhaya

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In this study we undertake a simple empirical analysis to examine the distribution of pecuniary and nonpecuniary benefits across the legal profession. Using the University of Michigan alumni data set, we conduct a series of regressions to examine how the participants' self-reported income and job satisfaction vary across the legal profession according to type of practice, gender, and whether the respondent is black or Hispanic. Regression analysis allows us to undertake this analysis while correcting for the effects of several other variables, including years of practice, hours worked, law school grades, satisfaction with family life, and population of the respondent's …
