The Immunology And Infection Of The Cystic Fibrosis Lung., Andrea Rene Drummond Massengale
The Immunology And Infection Of The Cystic Fibrosis Lung., Andrea Rene Drummond Massengale
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The leading cause of death among cystic fibrosis (CF) patients is progressive lung disease characterized by an early, sustained inflammation, chronic infection by mucoid strains of P. aeruginosa, and subsequent bronchiectasis. The connection between defective CFTR and the apparent pathophysiology of the CF lung remains unclear. Understanding this connection is of critical importance in developing strategies that temper the respiratory inflammation in CF and prevent P. aeruginosa colonization of the airways. The goal of this dissertation was to provide new insight concerning the immunology and infection of the CF lung by investigating the following: (1) the effect of alginate on …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Flow Boiling Heat Transfer And Critical Heat Flux In A Vertically Oriented Heated Tube, Dominic Peters
An Experimental Investigation Of The Flow Boiling Heat Transfer And Critical Heat Flux In A Vertically Oriented Heated Tube, Dominic Peters
Theses
Boiling and single-phase heat transfer data were taken for water flowing in a vertically oriented circular tube. Heat fluxes of up to 2MW/m2 and wall temperatures up to 135C were obtained in nucleate flow boiling. In film boiling, wall temperatures of up to 400C were obtained with a ninefold decrease in the heat transfer effectiveness after critical heat flux (CHF) was reached. A computer model was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to assist in the design process as well as to provide insight into the transport phenomena not realizable from the instrumentation. Validations of the instrumentation used in …

Xerox Early Customer Engagement Process And Documentation, Carmen Bottini
Theses
This paper focused on the Early Customer Engagement (ECE/ECAT) activity that should be utilized for every new product that Xerox develops. ECE is the practice of allowing a few of Xerox more "friendly" accounts to test a product before it launched to the general public. Although the ECE practice has been in utilized for some time, a standardized process and corresponding documentation did not exist. Because of this, there has been ECE Tests that have received unfavorable grades from participants even though the actual Xerox product was satisfactory. The use of this documentation will allow Xerox to streamline the activity …

The Human Race, Alex Gurevich
Theses
To tell a story and to tell it well is a paramount function in human society. Whether the desired outcome is to engage, educate, or entertain the viewer the goal is the same. Through story we endeavor to learn something more about ourselves and hopefully show others something new within themselves. As the old adage goes, "Give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach that man how to fish you feed him for a lifetime." One could simply give that hungry man a pole, a line, a hook, and a worm and give him directions on …

The Validity Of Selected Draw-A-Person Test Classifying Criteria Among Homosexual And Non Homosexual Males., Joel Von Ornsteiner
The Validity Of Selected Draw-A-Person Test Classifying Criteria Among Homosexual And Non Homosexual Males., Joel Von Ornsteiner
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the validity of Machover's(1949)interpretation that attention to both the hips and buttocks drawn by males subjects in their first male Draw-A-Person Test(DAP) or the drawing of a female figure first are significant indicators of male homosexuality. The hypothesis was that the frequency of these homosexual indicators among non-instituted homosexuals indicators among non-instituted homosexuals would be significantly higher(P = < .05) than the male heterosexual group. One hundred homosexual and 100 heterosexual males were selected from groups of volunteers from two universities, one bookstore and a community center in the New York area. The subjects were administered a DAP test in booklet format and a questionnaire. The drawings were classified for homosexual indicators blindly and independently by three judges who were trained in the use of the Machover interpretation of the DAP. Chi square analyses were calculated for the frequency of hips and buttocks and for the drawing of a female figure first and no significant differences between the self identified homosexual and heterosexual male groups in the expected direction were found. It was concluded that the lack of any significant difference between the scores of the homosexual and heterosexual males in this study casts considerable doubt on the validity of the male homosexual interpretations explored.Speculations were made concerning the widely discrepant results from past studies and this investigation. The majority of the past research had been conducted within institutional settings and there have been cultural changes over the last fifty years in both psychology and society's tolerance for the male homosexual.Unlike any previous DAP study,one-hundred urban homosexual and one-hundred heterosexual males were randomly selected. This researcher cautions that the DAP test should be interpreted with other available information, and results based on its independent use are viewed with much skepticism.Implications for future research were discussed.

OES Faculty Publications
This study evaluated the ability of Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) to balance the daily photosynthetic deficit by mobilization of carbon reserves stored in below-ground tissues during a period of extreme winter light limitation. A quantitative understanding of the mobilization process and its limitations is essential to the development of robust models predicting minimum light levels required to maintain healthy seagrass populations. Plants were grown in running seawater tanks under 2 light regimes. One treatment was provided with 2 h irradiance-saturated photosynthesis (Hsat) to produce severe Light Limitation, while control plants were grown under 7 h Hsat, …

In the closing weeks of the 1996 election, Montana's airwaves were flooded with the following television advertisement:
Who is Bill Yellowtail? He preaches family values, but he took a swing at his wife. Yellowtail's explanation? He 'only slapped her,' but her nose was broken. He talks law and order, but is himself a convicted criminal. And though he talks about protecting children, Yellowtail failed to make his own child support payments, then voted against child support enforcement. Call Bill Yellowtail and tell him we don't approve of his wrongful behavior. Call (406) 443-3620.

Inspired by Ted Schneyer's future history of professional discipline' and Bob Gordon's descrption of "the hazy aspirational world" of the "Law Day Sermon,' I offer a vision of the legal profession 'a next fifty years in the form of a Law Day speech from the year 2050. Looking back on developments in the first half of the twenty-first century, this piece explores the implications of the analysis proposed in my earlier article, The Professionalism Paradigm Shift: Why Discarding Professional Ideology Will Improve the Conduct and Reputation of the Bar. The speech presents a projection of the moral leadership the bar …
The Place Of Victims In The Theory Of Retribution, George P. Fletcher
The Place Of Victims In The Theory Of Retribution, George P. Fletcher
Faculty Scholarship
Remarkably, the theory of criminal law has developed without paying much attention to the place of victims in the analysis of responsibility or in the rationale for punishment. You can read a first-rate book like Michael Moore's recent Placing Blame and not find a single reference to the relevance of victims in imposing liability and punishment. In the last several decades we have witnessed notable strides toward attending to the rights and interests of crime victims, but these concerns have yet to intrude upon the discussion of the central issues of wrongdoing, blame, and punishment.
Admittedly, victims and their sentiments …

Rapid Single- And Multiple-Scattering Exafs Debye-Waller Factor Calculations On Active Sites Of Metalloproteins, Nicholas Dimakis, M-Ali Al-Akhras, Grant Bunker
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
This paper describes recent results using our approach to calculating self-consistently single (SS) and multiple-scattering (MS) Debye- Waller factors (DWF) on active sites of metalloproteins. The calculation of MS DWF, together with the Feff7 program allows us to simulate ab-initio EXAFS spectra for a given temperature systems with no adjustable parameters. In our latest report (Dimakis N., and Bunker G., 1998) we calculate, using density functional and semiempirical approaches, the SS and MS DWF for small molecules and compared them to Raman, infrared and EXAFS spectra. In this report calculation of DWFs is done for tetrahedral Zn imidazole, a complex …

Polymer Depletion Effects Near Mesoscopic Particles, Andreas Hanke, E. Eisenriegler, S. Dietrich
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The behavior of mesoscopic particles dissolved in a dilute solution of long, flexible, and nonadsorbing polymer chains is studied by field-theoretic methods. For spherical and cylindrical particles the solvation free energy for immersing a single particle in the solution is calculated explicitly. Important features are qualitatively different for self-avoiding polymer chains as compared with ideal chains. The results corroborate the validity of the Helfrich-type curvature expansion for general particle shapes and allow for quantitative experimental tests. For the effective interactions between a small sphere and a wall, between a thin rod and a wall, and between two small spheres, quantitative …
Critical Adsorption On Curved Objects, Andreas Hanke, S. Dietrich
Critical Adsorption On Curved Objects, Andreas Hanke, S. Dietrich
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
A systematic field-theoretical description of critical adsorption on curved objects such as spherical or rodlike colloidal particles immersed in a fluid near criticality is presented. The temperature dependence of the corresponding order parameter profiles and of the excess adsorption are calculated explicitly. Critical adsorption on elongated rods is substantially more pronounced than on spherical particles. It turns out that, within the context of critical phenomena in confined geometries, critical adsorption on a microscopically thin ‘‘needle’’ represents a distinct universality class of its own. Under favorable conditions the results are relevant for the flocculation of colloidal particles.

Symmetry breaking surface fields give rise to nontrivial and long-ranged order parameter profiles for critical systems such as fluids, alloys, or magnets confined to wedges. We discuss the properties of the corresponding universal scaling functions of the order parameter profile and the two-point correlation function, and determine the critical exponents η∥ and η⊥ for the so-called normal transition.
