Comparison Of Precipitation Catch Between Nine Measuring Systems, Clayton L. Hanson, Gregory L. Johnson, Albert Rango Jan 1999

Comparison Of Precipitation Catch Between Nine Measuring Systems, Clayton L. Hanson, Gregory L. Johnson, Albert Rango

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A site was established by the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service on the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in southwest Idaho in the fall of 1987 and operated through the spring of 1994, to compare precipitation catch between nine precipitation-measuring systems. This site was established as a part of the World Meteorological Organization’s program to compare current national methods of measuring solid precipitation (snow), so the primary emphasis of this study was the measurement of snowfall. Over seven seasons, four of the systems measured snowfall and total catch, which included snow, mixed snow and rain, and rain events, within …

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell Jan 1999

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell

Theses : Honours

A discussion of time and image in the shorter poems of William Carlos Williams. The particular focus is Williams' short poems published between the Great War and World War II. The relationship between the form of the poems, and Williams' theories on poetry, as expressed in Spring and All, and The Wedge is examined. In turn, Williams' theories are viewed in the context of Imagism, Objectivist poetics, and the modernist machine aesthetic. Williams' application of these theories is seen to create a poetic form that generates images in the reader's imagination in synchrony with the moment.

A 2d Dwt Architecture Suitable For The Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Algorithm, James Martinez

Theses : Honours

Digital Imaging has had an enormous impact on industrial applications such as the Internet and video-phone systems. However, demand for industrial applications is growing enormously. In particular, internet application users are, growing at a near exponential rate. The sharp increase in applications using digital images has caused much emphasis on the fields of image coding, storage, processing and communications. New techniques are continuously developed with the main aim of increasing efficiency. Image coding is in particular a field of great commercial interest. A digital image requires a large amount of data to be created. This large amount of data causes …

Inhibition Of Fibronectin Matrix Assembly By The Heparin-Binding Domain Of Vitronectin, Denise C. Hocking, Jane Sottile, Thomas Reho, Reinhard Fässler, Paula J. Mckeown-Longo Jan 1999

Inhibition Of Fibronectin Matrix Assembly By The Heparin-Binding Domain Of Vitronectin, Denise C. Hocking, Jane Sottile, Thomas Reho, Reinhard Fässler, Paula J. Mckeown-Longo

Biology

The deposition of fibronectin into the extracellular matrix is an integrin-dependent, multistep process that is tightly regulated in order to ensure controlled matrix deposition. Reduced fibronectin deposition has been associated with altered embryonic development, tumor cell invasion, and abnormal wound repair. In one of the initial steps of fibronectin matrix assembly, the amino-terminal region of fibronectin binds to cell surface receptors, termed matrix assembly sites. The present study was undertaken to investigate the role of extracellular signals in the regulation of fibronectin deposition. Our data indicate that the interaction of cells with the extracellular glycoprotein, vitronectin, specifically inhibits matrix assembly …

Northeast Asia In The 2tst Century: Prospects For Cooperation And Implications For The Philippines, Gerardo L. Largoza, Ponciano S. Intal Jr., Tereso S. Tullao Jr

DLSU Business & Economics Review

When speculating upon the future configuration of political and economic/forces in Northeast Asia, observers tend to be confronted with the same problem that baffled them 40 years ago: not only is it rather difficult to say with any great degree of certainty where the region is headed, it is also unclear as to how stable the existing institutional conditions within the key countries are. In the midst of clear indications of rising prosperity in places such as China's southern coastal provinces are found leaders primarily concerned with surviving the erosion of their political legitimacy as well as over a billion …

Research Gaps In Entrepreneurship: The Case Method As An Alternative Approach, Andrea L. Santiago Jan 1999

Research Gaps In Entrepreneurship: The Case Method As An Alternative Approach, Andrea L. Santiago

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Entrepreneurship is said to spur the economy. Entrepreneurs, who are considered "agents of change," are also said to have become major employers in both developed and developing countries (Sexton & Kasarda, Eds., 1992; OECD, 1998). However, a statistical link between job creation and entrepreneurship (Acs & Audretsch, 1992; OECD, 1998; Sweeney, 1997) has not been established resulting from definition problems that will be discussed subsequently. Nonetheless, the various readings pointed that for several countries, there is a shift from an economy that is basically corporate and bureaucratic to one that is entrepreneurially inspired.

Enhancing Autonomy For Battered Women: Lessons From Navajo Peacemaking, Donna Coker Jan 1999

Enhancing Autonomy For Battered Women: Lessons From Navajo Peacemaking, Donna Coker

Articles

In this Article, Professor Donna Coker employs original empirical research to investigate the use of Navajo Peacemaking in cases involving domestic violence. Her analysis includes an examination of Navajo women's status and the impact of internal colonization. Many advocates for battered women worry that informal adjudication methods such as Peacemaking ignore domestic hierarchies of power and thus facilitate the batterer's ongoing violence against the victim. Those who endorse the use of Navajo Peacemaking and other systems of restorative justice believe that such processes are better equipped to cut through the batterer's denial and victim blaming and are more likely to …

Effects Of Secondary Electron Emission On Charge Pulses From A Z-Stack Microchnnel Plate Photon Counting Detector With A Crossed Delay Line Anode Readout, Alan W. Bird

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A study of the effects of secondary electron emission on charge pulses from a microchannel plate (MCPs) photon counting detector with crossed delay line (CDL) anode readout is presented. The detector is a two-dimensional photon counting detector with fast count rate and good spatial resolution being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The CDL anode is constructed of two orthogonal planar pairs of helically wound wires on inner and outer ceramic sides attached to a copper ground plane. The electron cloud event from the MCPs interacts with the wires generating a signal pulse. The electrons that strike the wire with …

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

In a recent paper a new technique was proposed for remote ranging and topographical mapping by using a system with a single-photon-counting detector and a low-power pulsed laser @Appl. Opt. 35, 441 ~1996!#. We report on the results from the laboratory and the field demonstration of this literal three-dimensional imaging technique. Using a detector system developed at Los Alamos with a commercial pulsed laser and observing from a single remote vantage point, we demonstrate use of this technique in the literal mapping of three-dimensional topography and the probing of a complex scene. With a reasonably short exposure this system can …
