A Survey On Digital Reading Materials And Personal Study Of Christian Religious Texts, Teancum Price
A Survey On Digital Reading Materials And Personal Study Of Christian Religious Texts, Teancum Price
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Religion, including reading from religious texts such as scriptures, are a part of the daily lives of many people. Modern technology has influenced the way that this religious reading takes place, but its effects have not yet been studied. Existing research of the effects of technology on reading focus on topics such as reading comprehension, but the study of religious texts is often focused on achieving a religious experience, so the existing research does not capture the whole scope of these changes. In our study, we surveyed two universities (Utah State University and Abilene Christian University) to ask individuals how …

An Alternative Representation For Temporal Json, Bishal Sarkar
An Alternative Representation For Temporal Json, Bishal Sarkar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is a common format for representing and exchanging data on the web. Most systems only keep the current version of a JSON document, even though, in many situations, it is also important to know how that document changed over time. For example, an application might need to answer questions such as “What did this record look like last week?” or “How has this list grown over the past year?” A simple way to keep this history is to store a full copy of the document every time it changes, but this quickly becomes wasteful, most of …
Scalable Roof Polygon Extraction And Geometric Characterization From Remotely-Sensed Data For Snow Load Assessment, Jashon Newlun
Scalable Roof Polygon Extraction And Geometric Characterization From Remotely-Sensed Data For Snow Load Assessment, Jashon Newlun
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Heavy snow accumulation on rooftops is a serious structural risk in cold climates, and understanding how much snow builds up on different types of roofs is essential for safe building design. Currently, most data on roof snow loads comes from small, labor-intensive field surveys that cover only a handful of buildings at a time. This results in far too few measurements of buildings to draw confident conclusions about how snow behaves across communities. This thesis develops and demonstrates a new automated approach for measuring roof snow accumulation and extracting key building characteristics across thousands of buildings at once using airborne …

Exploring The Training Experiences Of Adult Taekwondo Practitioners: A Case Study Of A Martial Arts Program In The Southern United States, Nicholas Daniel Ryburn
Exploring The Training Experiences Of Adult Taekwondo Practitioners: A Case Study Of A Martial Arts Program In The Southern United States, Nicholas Daniel Ryburn
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Taekwondo has gained increasing prominence among adult practitioners in the United States, offering both physical and psychological benefits. However, despite its popularity, research on Taekwondo has predominantly emphasized youth populations, competitive contexts, or injury epidemiology, with limited attention to the lived experiences of adult practitioners. Adults present distinct needs and challenges in martial arts training, including variability in physical conditioning, age-related health considerations, and constraints associated with family and professional responsibilities. A deeper understanding of these factors is crucial for developing training programs that are both effective and sustainable for adult populations. This dissertation employs a qualitative case study design …
The Impact Of Life Coaching On Self-Efficacy In Personal Goal Setting Among Black Educators In Arkansas, Veronica Cousette Jackson
The Impact Of Life Coaching On Self-Efficacy In Personal Goal Setting Among Black Educators In Arkansas, Veronica Cousette Jackson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative study examines the relationship between life coaching and self-efficacy in personal goal setting among Black educators in Arkansas, with gender explored as a moderating variable. Self-efficacy, grounded in Bandura’s (1997) social cognitive theory, is a central determinant of motivation and goal-directed behavior, influencing persistence, effort, and adaptive strategies. Although life coaching has gained recognition as a professional developmental practice, empirical research remains limited regarding its psychological effects within educator populations and its differential impact across demographic groups (Grant, 2014; Theeboom et al., 2014). This gap is particularly significant for Black educators, who experience disproportionate workforce stress and retention …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Quaternary aeolian and fluvial deposits along the Arkansas and Cimarron Rivers in Osage and Pawnee counties of central Oklahoma, record Late Pleistocene and Holocene fluvial landscape history in the eastern Osage Plains. Sediment supply, climate variability, channel incision, and channel migration control this landscape evolution. Sediment supply of both streams is dominantly sand. Late Pleistocene and Holocene precipitation have varied with periods of drought alternating with increased precipitation and warming. The study area is near the eastern boundary of substantial aeolian activity with drought and aeolian reworking of fluvial sand more severe to the west. This study examines the sediment, …
Connecting Work And Family Life: The Effects Of Family-Related Moderators On Idiosyncratic Deals Of Employees And Work Outcomes., Tanushree Chatterjee
Connecting Work And Family Life: The Effects Of Family-Related Moderators On Idiosyncratic Deals Of Employees And Work Outcomes., Tanushree Chatterjee
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Idiosyncratic deals (i-deals), which are customized work arrangements negotiated between employees and their organizations, have been increasingly recognized as a strategic mechanism for addressing the heterogeneous needs of today's diverse workforce. However, existing research has largely overlooked the role of employees' family backgrounds as a moderating context that shapes their effectiveness. Drawing on work-life border theory (Clark, 2000) and conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989), the study tests whether work-family conflict and work-family enrichment mediate the downstream effects of i-deals on turnover intentions and job performance through the moderation of four family-related characteristics (parent status, number of children, family support, …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents a first-principles investigation of uranium mononitride (UN), withemphasis on the connection between uranium 5f electron correlation and defect stability. Electronic-structure calculations were performed within density functional theory using the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package. Exchange-correlation effects were treated within the generalized gradient approximation, and a Hubbard correction was applied to the uranium 5f manifold. The adopted Hubbard parameter was motivated by first-principles linear-response analysis and considered in the broader context of DFT+DMFT descriptions of correlated uranium systems, including recent interpretations of UN as a Hund-metal system. Bulk UN was studied in unit-cell and 2 x 2 x …
Singularity-Enriched Neural Networks For Elliptic Problems In Polygonal Domains, Harshini Reddy Kodiganti
Singularity-Enriched Neural Networks For Elliptic Problems In Polygonal Domains, Harshini Reddy Kodiganti
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis develops and analyzes neural-network-based solvers for the Poisson equation on polygonal domains, where re-entrant corners induce reduced solution regularity and challenge standard numerical methods.
Three neural formulations are investigated: Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), Physics-Informed Extreme Learning Machines (PIELMs), and Rank-Inspired Neural Networks (RINNs). PINNs rely on gradient-based optimization with automatic differentiation, while PIELMs employ randomly initialized hidden features with least-squares training, achieving significantly lower computational cost. RINNs extend this framework through covariance-driven orthogonalization to improve numerical conditioning and stability.
On convex polygonal domains, all three methods are benchmarked against analytical solutions. Both PIELM and RINN consistently achieve higher …

Dynamic Joint Stiffness Druing Jogging In Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability, David Saltiel Nava
Dynamic Joint Stiffness Druing Jogging In Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability, David Saltiel Nava
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background: Lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are common musculoskeletal injuries and may progress to chronic ankle instability (CAI), which is characterized by recurrent sprains, perceived "giving way," and altered ankle mechanics. Dynamic joint stiffness (DJS) quantifies a joint's resistance to angular displacement under external loading and may provide insight into ankle stability during dynamic tasks. Although prior CAI studies have examined DJS during walking or jumping, limited evidence exists during jogging. This study examined phase-specific ankle DJS and ankle work variables during jogging in individuals with and without CAI. Methods: Ninety participants were included (40 CAI, 50 uninjured controls). All participants …
Three Essays On Workplace Ethics And Ai: Conceptualizing, Scale Development, And Validation Of Self-Value Actualization, And Ai-Enabled High-Performance Work Systems, Mansura Nusrat
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation advances understanding of workplace ethics and responsible AI integration across three interconnected essays unified by social cognitive theory. My first essay introduces self-value actualization (SVA), a novel construct defined as the dynamic, integrated psychological process through which individuals continually strive to align and fulfill their core moral values through observable professional behavior. Drawing on social cognitive theory and emotional intelligence theory, I conceptualize SVA as a higher-order self-regulatory orientation comprising three mutually reinforcing processes: value congruence, moral reflection, and adaptive morality. I developed and validated a 9-item SVA scale across four studies using expert panels, exploratory factor analysis, …
Deep Neural Network-Gaussian Process For Housing Price Analysis, Bismark Nyarko
Deep Neural Network-Gaussian Process For Housing Price Analysis, Bismark Nyarko
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Neural networks have demonstrated remarkable predictive performance in complex, high-dimensional settings. However, their highly parameterized structure and nonlinear architecture often make them difficult to interpret, limiting formal statistical inference and principled uncertainty quantification. In contrast, Gaussian processes (GPs) provide a fully probabilistic framework with a relatively small number of hyperparameters, enabling coherent uncertainty quantification and seamless integration into hierarchical and structured statistical models. Despite their theoretical flexibility as nonparametric function approximators, standard GP formulations frequently exhibit weaker predictive performance than modern neural networks in large-scale applications.
In this work, we employ a Gaussian process covariance function designed to approximate the …
Efficient Solvers For Phase Field Models, Raymond Obeng
Efficient Solvers For Phase Field Models, Raymond Obeng
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Phase field models provide a versatile framework for describing phase transitions and pattern formation in materials, enabling the study of complex phenomena such as crystallization, grain growth, and defect dynamics. Among these models, the Phase Field Crystal (PFC) equation has gained significant attention due to its ability to capture atomic-scale structures while evolving on diffusive time scales. However, the numerical solution of the PFC equation presents substantial challenges arising from its high-order nature and the large-scale, coupled linear systems generated by discretization.
In particular, standard formulations of the discretized PFC system lead to non-symmetric and often ill-conditioned linear systems, which …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
My thesis examines how the musical The Creature from Space uses metatheatre, musical form, and science fiction to explore identity, conformity, and social control within a fictional 1950s Texas town. Centered on Lilly, a young woman struggling between loyalty to her hometown and the desire for personal freedom, the musical reimagines conventions of the Golden Age American musical while critiquing the ideological structures embedded within them. Drawing on works such as Oklahoma!, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Schmigadoon!, Little Shop of Horrors, and Ride the Cyclone, the project examines how musical theatre constructs and reinforces social roles through performance. The …
Understanding Machine Learning Model Behavior Under Fairness And Privacy Constraints, David Anthony Sanchez
Understanding Machine Learning Model Behavior Under Fairness And Privacy Constraints, David Anthony Sanchez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Machine learning systems deployed in high-stakes domains are increasingly expected to satisfy demands beyond predictive accuracy-including fairness across demographic groups, protection of sensitive information, and explanations that human stakeholders can inspect and trust. This thesis investigates how those demands can be met through learning frameworks that explicitly govern the relationship between data and models, arguing that trustworthiness is a design problem rather than a post hoc correction. The thesis is organized around three studies, each targeting a distinct point of data-facing control. The first develops CondFairGen, a fairness-aware conditional generator for tabular data that improves subgroup equity by dynamically reweighting …
The Transformation Of Mexican-American Fathers In Doctoral Studies, Harat Ridrigo Saucedo
The Transformation Of Mexican-American Fathers In Doctoral Studies, Harat Ridrigo Saucedo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Fatherhood and minority are words that are not discussed enough in academia. While there has been an awakening in women enrolling and graduating in higher education, the same cannot be said about males, especially fathers of Mexican-American background. As the fastest-growing minority, Mexican-American fathers in doctoral studies are the most underrepresented. The current state of research in the field is minimal, focusing on Mexican-Americans in undergraduate courses, mothers in graduate courses, and males in graduate courses; little is found on Mexican-American fathers in doctoral studies. The research in this qualitative study was designed to address the limited knowledge about Mexican-American …
Salience Network Circuit Dynamics In Distress Tolerance And Drug-Seeking Vulnerability, Marina Alicia Smoak
Salience Network Circuit Dynamics In Distress Tolerance And Drug-Seeking Vulnerability, Marina Alicia Smoak
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The psychological distress experienced during drug withdrawal can lead individuals with substance use disorder to abandon their goal of abstinence. Numerous human studies demonstrate that an inability to persist in challenging, goal-directed behavior while experiencing psychological distress is associated with multiple stages of substance use, including relapse. This behavioral construct is referred to as low distress tolerance (DT). Rodent models of DT similarly show that low DT predicts elevated cocaine relapse, particularly when DT is assessed following extended abstinence. This abstinence period corresponds with the incubation of craving, a phenomenon characterized by progressively increased cocaine-seeking over time. Importantly, relapse vulnerability …
A Numerical Method For The Phase Field Crystal Model, Patrick Ameyaw Tabiri
A Numerical Method For The Phase Field Crystal Model, Patrick Ameyaw Tabiri
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Phase Field Crystal (PFC) model is a continuum-based framework used to study theevolution of crystalline materials while preserving microscopic structural features over diffusive time scales. It captures complex phenomena such as phase transitions, defect dynamics, and microstructure formation via a nonlinear sixth-order partial differential equation derived from a free-energy functional. In this context, the phrase "sixth-order" indicates that the highest spatial derivative appearing in the equation is of order six. In this work, we study the mathematical formulation and numerical approximation of solutions to the PFC model. Due to the high-order spatial derivatives and nonlinearity in the governing partial …
High-Resolution Mapping Of Brainstem Feeding Circuits: A Framework For Targeted Neuroscience Tools, Geronimo Tapia
High-Resolution Mapping Of Brainstem Feeding Circuits: A Framework For Targeted Neuroscience Tools, Geronimo Tapia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The neural control of energy balance is mediated in part by distributed brainstem circuits that integrate metabolic, visceral, and hormonal signals to coordinate appropriate motivated behaviors and autonomic responses. Despite extensive study, the precise neuroanatomical architecture regulating metabolism remains incompletely defined within standardized atlas frameworks. This work addresses that gap through complementary studies examining an acute glycemic challenge methodology known to stimulate feeding, the acute delivery of an anorexigenic-associated neurohormone, and the chemoarchitecture of a major feeding-related region, the parabrachial nucleus. First, utilizing 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) induced glucoprivation, we map the rapid response of dorsal medullary neuronal populations with high spatial …
Lay Perceptions Of Alternative Dispute Resolution In Civil Legal Disputes, Ashley Gale Vaughan
Lay Perceptions Of Alternative Dispute Resolution In Civil Legal Disputes, Ashley Gale Vaughan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examined how laypeople evaluate alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures in civil legal disputes, focusing on outcome favorability, procedural format, and procedural choice. Drawing on procedural justice theory, two vignette-based studies tested whether mediation would be evaluated more favorably than arbitration and whether allowing participants to choose the ADR process would improve satisfaction and perceptions of procedural justice. Study 1 used a 2 x 2 between-subjects design with undergraduate participants (N = 140) and manipulated ADR process (mediation vs. arbitration) and outcome (favorable vs. unfavorable). Study 2 extended this design by adding a choice condition in a community adult …
The Moderating Role Of Cannabis Use Motives On The Relationship Between Intragroup Marginalization And Cannabis Use In Hispanic Emerging Adults, Austin Ray Vernon
The Moderating Role Of Cannabis Use Motives On The Relationship Between Intragroup Marginalization And Cannabis Use In Hispanic Emerging Adults, Austin Ray Vernon
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cannabis use has become increasingly normalized among emerging adults, yet associated risks to health remain a growing concern. Cannabis use among Hispanic populations has risen over the past decade, underscoring the need to examine culturally relevant factors that may influence use patterns and related harm. Intragroup marginalization, a culturally specific form of identity-based rejection from one's own ethnic group, may represent one such factor. The present study examined whether intragroup marginalization is associated with cannabis use outcomes and whether cannabis use motives moderate these associations. Participants were 358 Hispanic college students recruited from a U.S.-Mexico border university. Following informed consent, …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Global change, driven by both natural processes and human activities, has significantly transformed ecosystems. Urbanization and artificial light at night (ALAN) are key contributors, disrupting natural light cycles and influencing biological rhythms, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions. Thus far, there remains a gap in knowledge of how soil ecosystems are impacted by ALAN. This study uses a laboratory incubation to investigate the effects of ALAN on soil microbial communities and functions across urban and natural ecosystems. Briefly, soil was collected from eight sites around El Paso, Texas and neighboring New Mexico representing urban and rural light exposure. Soil was then subjected …
Riemannian Manifold-Coupled Joint Sparse Graphical Models For Spatially Structured Precision Matrix Estimation, Abdul Rahman Adam
Riemannian Manifold-Coupled Joint Sparse Graphical Models For Spatially Structured Precision Matrix Estimation, Abdul Rahman Adam
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis introduces a novel geometry-aware framework for joint precision matrix estimation in spatially structured data. Unlike existing joint Gaussian graphical model estimators that rely on Euclidean coupling mechanisms such as fused or group graphical lasso, our approach incorporates intrinsic Riemannian geometry through geodesic distance penalties on the symmetric positive definite manifold.
The method measures similarity between precision matrices of adjacent spatial regions using the affine-invariant Riemannian distance, capturing deformations of concentration ellipsoids rather than entrywise differences. This is particularly suited for spatial transcriptomics, where regions may share dependence structures despite differences in scale or composition.
An efficient Alternating Direction …

Language attitude studies have been a vital aspect of Sociolinguistics research along the U.S.-Mexico border, with significant contributions having been made by Hugo Mejias and his colleagues in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (1986; 2003) and Hidalgo (1986) in Ciudad Juarez. However, there has been a lack of updated language attitude research in the region in recent decades, particularly in the city of El Paso, which, up to now, has not been the subject of a general language attitude survey. The present project seeks to investigate the language attitudes of bilingual Spanish-speakers living in the El Paso region through the …
Exhumation Of The Pelona-Orocopia-Rand Schist And Fault Kinematic Constraints On Evolution Of The Eastern California Shear Zone, James Boyette Barker
Exhumation Of The Pelona-Orocopia-Rand Schist And Fault Kinematic Constraints On Evolution Of The Eastern California Shear Zone, James Boyette Barker
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Southeastern California has experienced a complex recent geologic history as it continues to evolve from a convergent boundary to a period of NE-directed extension and evolution of the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ). This transition is recorded in exhumed bodies of Pelona-Orocopia-Rand (POR) schist and in changing styles of fault deformation. This thesis has two interrelated goals. First, I aim to refine the timing of transition from NE extension to NS contraction in the ECSZ of southeastern California by integrating (U-Th)/He thermochronology with field-based structural analysis. The second prong of this study is to constrain broader patterns of POR schist …
