Nichiren’S Risshō Ankoku Ron And Canon Formation, William E. Deal Jan 1999

Nichiren’S Risshō Ankoku Ron And Canon Formation, William E. Deal

Faculty Scholarship

Regardless of his own stated purpose or expected outcome for the Risshõ ankoku ron, one of Nichiren’s accomplishments in writing this treatise was the articulation of a canon, that is, a list of texts that were deemed true and authoritative from his perspective, as distinguished from other writings that were not. This essay explores the process of canon formation in Nichiren Buddhism, focusing on the structure and argument of the Risshõ ankoku ron. Noting five notions present in the process of canon formation, namely, selectivity, hierarchy, closure, orthodoxy, and legitimation, it examines the particular way these elements are manifest in …

Advances In The Control Of A “Smart Tube” High Power Backward Wave Oscillator, Chaouki T. Abdallah, E. Schamiloglu, G.T. Park, V.S. Soualian, F. Hegeler Jan 1999

Advances In The Control Of A “Smart Tube” High Power Backward Wave Oscillator, Chaouki T. Abdallah, E. Schamiloglu, G.T. Park, V.S. Soualian, F. Hegeler

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Previous accomplishments pertaining to the control of various parameters of an intense beam-driven relativistic backward wave oscillator (BWO) include maintaining a specified or desired output power over a determined frequency bandwidth, and maintaining a constant frequency over a wide range of power. This was accomplished using an iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm that yielded the appropriate input variables for the electron beam, as well as the appropriate displacement of the slow wave structure from the cutoff neck. A problem of much greater complexity is the simultaneous control of both frequency and power, involving the independent mapping of both power and …

Measuring Gender Equity, Alfred Dennis Mathewson, Robert D. Rogers Jan 1999

Measuring Gender Equity, Alfred Dennis Mathewson, Robert D. Rogers

Faculty Scholarship

It is our intent to provide some insight into the development of compliance plans with an eye toward a university's athletic program policy. In Part I, we explore conventional attempts to measure relative demand and its use in litigated cases. In Part II, we describe the measurement instrument we used to conduct the empirical study. Our study is distinguished from conventional efforts in two respects.2 7 First, we did not seek to measure the number of athletes with interest and ability. Rather we sought to measure the relative amounts of athletic participation that would be consumed if a university satisfied …

The Perceived Effects Of Cross-Cultural Interaction On Flight Crew Training Between Anglo-Australian Flight Instructors And Asian Students, Daniel Goh Jan 1999

The Perceived Effects Of Cross-Cultural Interaction On Flight Crew Training Between Anglo-Australian Flight Instructors And Asian Students, Daniel Goh

Theses : Honours

The study investigated the perceived effects of cross-cultural interaction on ab-initio flight crew training between Anglo Australian flight instructors and Asian students. Students and instructors perceptions were sought as to whether they believed that cross-cultural interaction would impede learning. The sample included forty-eight students and nine instructors from two flying schools. Thirty-eight students were required to complete a 15 item survey and ten students and nine instructors participated in a semi-structured interview. The research identified four specific areas - language, studying and teaching methods, attitudes towards asking questions, and command decision making. Cross-cultural interaction was found to be an integral …

Representations Of History In Popular Cinema : Schindler's List And Jfk As Postmodern History Texts, Kieran L. Murphy Jan 1999

Representations Of History In Popular Cinema : Schindler's List And Jfk As Postmodern History Texts, Kieran L. Murphy

Theses : Honours

The concept of this dissertation is to research specific filmic representations of historical situations, and to discuss arguments presented in Spielberg's Holocaust by critics such as Bartov, Hansen and Zelizer (1997), that popular films such as Schindler's List are unable to represent history to the same extent as traditional historical texts. I will also attempt to locate specific interest groups who reaffirm the truth claims of traditional historical narrative, the gatekeepers of 'historical truth', and to examine the nature of 'popular history', and how it is negotiated in the modern cultural sphere. I will analyse the concept of the 'unrepresentable' …

Better Implementation Of Calculators In The Classroom Through Parental Involvement, Jennifer S. Kemp Jan 1999

Better Implementation Of Calculators In The Classroom Through Parental Involvement, Jennifer S. Kemp

Theses : Honours

This study examined the changes in parental attitudes towards calculator use in the classroom during their involvement in calculator activities with students. The study also investigated the effectiveness of involving parents in mathematics activities as a support mechanism for calculator implementation in the school as a whole. A class of year 6 students and their parents were chosen for the study. Parents were first given a questionnaire to evaluate their attitudes towards the use of calculators in schools. Interested parents were consequently invited to participate in one fifty-minute lesson per week for eight weeks. During these lessons, calculators were used …

Effects Of Letterland On Phonemic Awareness And Retrieval Of Phonological Information From Long Term Memory, Dianne Hodgson Jan 1999

Effects Of Letterland On Phonemic Awareness And Retrieval Of Phonological Information From Long Term Memory, Dianne Hodgson

Theses : Honours

This study examined whether a pictorial mnemonic based program called Letterland, with and without fluency training, improved accuracy and fluency of decoding letter-sounds for children experiencing difficulties learning to read. A single subject experimental ABCDA research design was used with four Year 1 students experiencing difficulties with reading. After baseline (A), the first intervention (B) taught seven Letterland characters and letter-sounds without fluency training over 6 sessions, the second intervention (C) taught seven new letters using Letterland and including fluency training, and the third intervention (D) reviewed all 14 letters with fluency training. Testing involved CVC real words and …

Implementing Flexible Software Techniques In A 4gl Environment, Stephen O'Connor Jan 1999

Implementing Flexible Software Techniques In A 4gl Environment, Stephen O'Connor

Theses : Honours

Today more IT professionals arc employed on the maintenance of existing software applications than are employed to develop new systems. Why is there such a need for this maintenance? Part of the problem is that developers have traditionally seen system requirements as fixed from the time they have been 'signed off. In reality requirements arc dynamic and subject to change as an organisation's environment changes. Flexible software techniques recognise that software requirements are subject to future changes. Flexibility is seen as an important design goal criterion with "true" or "strong" flexibility implying that an application's behaviour can be altered without …

Nene Gare, A Biographical Study: Australian Novelist, 1919-1994, Rosina Squarcini

Theses : Honours

This thesis undertakes an introductory biographical study of Australian writer, Nene Gare, and a critical reading of her work with special reference to The Fringe Dwellers. The author of this study has sought to establish the basis for that novel's positive literary reception. The research has been directed at correcting, in part, the comparative neglect of this writer. Nene Gare's life and work has been surveyed in the belief that this study will contribute to the current knowledge of twentieth-century Australian fiction writers as well as showing the critical reception to Nene Gare's work as a part of Australian …

The Digital Signature: Your Identity By The Numbers, W. Everett Lupton Jan 1999

The Digital Signature: Your Identity By The Numbers, W. Everett Lupton

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Electronic commerce is the future of business. Today electronic commerce is a $3.6 billion industry. Thousands of businesses use the Internet to buy and sell their wares. As individuals and businesses increasingly use the Internet for commerce, contracts are moving online too. Because electronic commerce is conducted online, it is infeasible to make contracts through the traditional paper method. An electronic contract can be sent halfway across the world in seconds; whereas the same contract on paper would take days or weeks.

The Fourth Circuit's Narrow Definition Of "Matters Of Public Concern" Denies State-Employed Academics Their Say: Urofsky V. Gilmore, Michael D. Hancock

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

While attempting to limit potential sexual harassment suits against the Commonwealth of Virginia, and also promote workplace efficiency, the Virginia General Assembly enacted legislation prohibiting state employees from accessing information containing sexual content from state-owned or leased computers without obtaining prior approval from their agency heads. Urofsky v. Gilmore concerns a suit brought by six faculty members employed by several state universities in federal district court alleging that the legislation infringed on their First Amendment free speech rights by unconstitutionally limiting their abilities to perform their jobs. Although the district court found for the plaintiffs, that decision was reversed on …

Two Movements Of A Constitutional Symphony: Akhil Reed Amar's The Bill Of Rights, Kurt T. Lash Jan 1999

Two Movements Of A Constitutional Symphony: Akhil Reed Amar's The Bill Of Rights, Kurt T. Lash

University of Richmond Law Review

A remarkable effort is afoot to justify American constitutional law at the end of the twentieth century. Ground zero in this effort is Yale Law School, and the principle architects are professors Akhil Reed Amar and Bruce Ackerman. Together, these scholars are calling for a reevaluation of commonly accepted doctrines with the goal of grounding judicial review and constitutional interpretation on the principles of popular sovereignty. What makes the effort remarkable is its emphasis on political morality, as opposed to the attainment of a particular doctrinal end. Take, for example, Amar's explanation of his purpose in writing The Bill of …

The Original Understanding Of The Seventh Amendment Right To Jury Trial, Stanton D. Krauss Jan 1999

The Original Understanding Of The Seventh Amendment Right To Jury Trial, Stanton D. Krauss

University of Richmond Law Review

I ought to be very angry with my friend Akhil Amar. His new book, The Bill of Rights: Creation and Reconstruction, strengthens, develops, and popularizes his strikingly original claim that the meaning of our Bill of Rights must be sought in the understanding of the people who enacted the Fourteenth Amendment, rather than that of James Madison and his contemporaries. If Akhil carries the day on this question-and I find his arguments quite powerful, my ongoing research into the original meaning of the Bill will be of interest only to antiquarians.

We Some Of The People: Akhil Reed Amor And The Original Intent Of The Bill Of Rights, Wythe Holt

"No Word Is An Island": Textualism And Aesthetics In Akhil Reed Amar's The Bill Of Rights, Robert Spoo Jan 1999

"No Word Is An Island": Textualism And Aesthetics In Akhil Reed Amar's The Bill Of Rights, Robert Spoo

University of Richmond Law Review

Akhil Reed Amar's The Bill of Rights: Creation and Reconstruction ("The Bill of Rights") probes three defining moments of American constitutional history-two of them in the contested past and one in the restless present. The first two are the performative acts of framing, in 1789 and 1868, respectively, of the initial ten amendments and of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. For Amar, history is too multivalent, and the Framers' text too loftily open-textured, for simple answers to the vexed question of incorporation. The Bill of Rights is, in one of Amar's controlling metaphors, an "alloy" of majoritarian …

The Bill Of Rights As An Exclamation Point, Gary Lawson Jan 1999

The Bill Of Rights As An Exclamation Point, Gary Lawson

University of Richmond Law Review

Akhil Amar's The Bill of Rights: Creation and Reconstruction ("The Bill of Rights") is one of the best law books of the twentieth century. That is not surprising, as it grows out of two of the best law review articles of the twentieth century and was written by one of the century's premier legal scholars. I have been an unabashed Akhil Amar fan ever since our overlapping law school days more than fifteen years ago, and I am thrilled to have my perspicacity and good judgment vindicated by the publication of this remarkable work.

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Corporate Law, A. Eric Kauders Jr. Jan 1999

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Corporate Law, A. Eric Kauders Jr.

University of Richmond Law Review

Despite its widely held reputation as being a bastion of all things conservative, Virginia has long been a leader on the frontier of corporate and partnership law. As a recent example confirming its progressive reputation, one need look no further than the 1991 passage of legislation permitting the formation of limited liability companies. While the amount ofactivity in corporate law this year was far from notable, the legislation and judicial decisions from the past year continue to demonstrate Virginia's "corporate activism."

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Antitrust And Trade Regulation, Michael F. Urbanski, James R. Creekmore Jan 1999

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Antitrust And Trade Regulation, Michael F. Urbanski, James R. Creekmore

University of Richmond Law Review

During the past year, the United States Supreme Court, in two decisions of significance, refused to summarily censure conduct having legitimate, procompetitive benefits. In similar fashion, the United States Court ofAppeals for the Fourth Circuit continued to scrutinize antitrust claims, rejecting those failing to measure up to pleading and proof requirements, while also reaffirming the vitality of the state action immunity doctrine as a bar to those that did. Meanwhile, Virginia's federal district courts grappled with time worn conspiracy challenges to medical staff privileging decisions, while simultaneously forging new ground in one of the first cases to consider market definition …
