Monitoring The Effects Of Indoor Pollution Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Rachel Farrell Jan 1999

Monitoring The Effects Of Indoor Pollution Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Rachel Farrell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy {FTIR) was used to develop an effective way to monitor indoor pollution and to observe the effects of such indoor pollution under various conditions of the ventilation system of McCollum Science Hall of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. This was done by monitoring the absorbance of acetone as it evaporated over time, and the data were used to create concentration vs. time plots. Several parameters from these plots were used to judge the ventilation system, with some general conclusions including that having the system on reduces peak time and end time. Also, the …

Comparing Alternative Products In The Provision Of Emergency Contraception, John P. Skibiak, Yusuf Ahmed, M. Ketata

Reproductive Health

This report is the third in a series of summaries produced in connection with the operations research project “Enhancing Access to Family Planning Services through the Introduction of Emergency Contraception.” Launched in September 1997, the project explores the many issues surrounding the introduction and delivery of emergency contraception services in a developing country context. The study compares the introduction of two different emergency contraception pills—the combined oral contraceptive PC-4, introduced in Zambia in 1997, and the progestin-only contraceptive Postinor-2, introduced by this study in the following year. Client histories showed only minor differences in the attitudes of emergency contraception users …

Schreiber V. Canada (A.G.), Robert J. Currie Jan 1999

Schreiber V. Canada (A.G.), Robert J. Currie

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The Airbus scandal has been a matter of fairly intense political interest since initial allegations of influence-peddling were made against several parties, including former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Of legal note, however, has been a challenge mounted by another party implicated by the Department of Justice's investigation into the matter, which has recently been pronounced upon by the Supreme Court of Canada. The Court's judgment in Schreiber v. Canada (Attorney General) provides an interesting view of conflicting societal values: the Charter-guaranteed freedom from unreasonable search and seizure raised in opposition to the state's interest in efficient and unfettered means through …

(1999) Thinking For Oneself And With Others, David K. Kennedy Jan 1999

(1999) Thinking For Oneself And With Others, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

The most distinctive feature of the theory and practice of community of philosophical inquiry, which at first glance appears contradictory, is how it promotes both communal, intersubjective meaning and thinking for oneself. Typically we think of the two as, if not opposed, then not particularly related. Human dialogue is the intersubjective location …
