Linking Corporate Goals And Shop Floor Performance, Loretta Cochran Dec 1999

Linking Corporate Goals And Shop Floor Performance, Loretta Cochran

All Dissertations

Several different types of programs have been introduced to translate organizational goals into performance measurement and feedback systems that can be transferred to the shop floor level for employees. An overreaching assumption has been made that there must be subsets of objectives in order to motivate shop floor employees. In the field of human resources, performance management systems have been designed as vehicles for goal translation from top management to lower levels. The total quality management literature introduces hoshin planning as another formula for disseminating goals between layers within the organization.

An aggregate perspective on this linkage of performance and …

To identify an effective medium for communicating with adolescents in a large-scale, cost-effective violence prevention program.

A set of youth violence prevention programs was established at The Stamford Hospital, a level II trauma center. The traveling version of the program was presented to middle school students in four parts: 1) a rap music video created by our violence prevention staff, 2) a facilitated discussion about dealing with anger, 3) a video of a trauma resuscitation in our emergency department, and 4) a commercial video of a teenage boy paralyzed after a gunshot wound. A written questionnaire with a five-point rating …

Five Women In American Politics Spanning 1917-1993 A Rhetorical Criticism Of News-Coverage From The New York Times, Sarah T. May Dec 1999

Five Women In American Politics Spanning 1917-1993 A Rhetorical Criticism Of News-Coverage From The New York Times, Sarah T. May

Student Work

Like the air we breathe, the media permeate our society. Twenty-four hours a day news and information is available from all reaches of the earth. Because the majority of our knowledge of the world around us comes from the media, they have tremendous power over how people, places and events are perceived (Graber, 1997). Whether the story publicizes controversial issues such as same-sex marriage, or tugs at patriotic themes like flag burning, by giving air times or column inches, media imply certain values and beliefs and newsworthy. In a democratic society, media do not say what to think, but highlighting …

A Study Of The Sublime In English Romantic Aesthetics, Derek T. Leuenberger Dec 1999

A Study Of The Sublime In English Romantic Aesthetics, Derek T. Leuenberger

Student Work

The nature and role of sublime experience has been an enduring topic of discussion in the history of aesthetics, dating back nearly 2000 years to the rhetorical sublime of Longinus. The emergence of English romanticism at the juncture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries wrought substantial change on conceptions of the sublime, driven primarily by Immanuel Kant’s transcendental philosophy. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and Percy Bysshe Shelley each develop a theory of sublimity grounded in the expression of unified and universal experience in human consciousness. Naturally, certain philosophical differences arise within the theoretical discourse of the authors - most …

Mipps: A Mobile Ip Protocol Simulator., Efren Serra

Student Work

We consider the problem of examining the performance requirement for mobility support on the Internet as specified by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Mobile-IP protocol. In this thesis, we have designed, implemented, and utilized a discreteevent graphical simulation tool that provides a fundamental collection of building blocks and runnables, as well as a general environment for timeoriented simulations of communication networks that employ IPv4 or Mobile IP as the network layer protocol. The major goal of this graphical tool is to help communications network researchers answer "what if'' questions, which may also help them improve any potential shortcomings of …

Service Quality In Higher Education: Expectations Versus Experiences Of Doctoral Students At State-Supported Universities In Tennessee, James H. Lampley Dec 1999

Service Quality In Higher Education: Expectations Versus Experiences Of Doctoral Students At State-Supported Universities In Tennessee, James H. Lampley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if a gap analysis model (SERVQUAL) of service quality measurement could be appropriately applied to higher education. The researcher asked doctoral students from six doctoral-granting, state-supported universities in Tennessee to complete a service quality survey, comparing their experiences with their expectations, thereby giving a measure of gaps in educational service quality at their institution. The research design included five research questions, with five null hypotheses testing the relationship between students' expectations and experiences, between overall satisfaction and service gaps, and between overall satisfaction and certain demographic variables (age, gender, ethnicity, type of …

Is Trade Liberalization An Important Cause Of Increasing U.S. Wage Inequality? The Interaction Of Theory And Policy, John B. Davis Dec 1999

Is Trade Liberalization An Important Cause Of Increasing U.S. Wage Inequality? The Interaction Of Theory And Policy, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The majority of mainstream economists believe that globalization and trade liberalization have had a minor role in increasing U.S. wage inequality. A minority argues that capital mobility and outsourcing indicate a larger effect. This paper first surveys these views, and then argues that how we understand the policy consequences of trade liberalization helps determine the character of our analysis of the issue itself. Thus, a shift in policy perspective, to consider the "equity costs" of trade liberalization in terms of eroded U.S. labor market institutions, produces a larger framework for analyzing the consequences of globalization and trade liberalization than is …

The Social Process Of "Passing" To Manage Stigma: Acts Of Internalized Oppression Or Acts Of Resistance?, Valli Kalei Kanuha Dec 1999

The Social Process Of "Passing" To Manage Stigma: Acts Of Internalized Oppression Or Acts Of Resistance?, Valli Kalei Kanuha

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In order to manage social stigma, some individuals construct and enact a social interaction strategy known as passing, which is "a performance in which one presents himself as what one is not" (Rohy, 1996). Based on interviews with lesbians and gay men of color, this article suggests that the process of passing is not based upon a rejection of stigmatized identity, but situationally employed to resist social oppression.

Using Professionally Trained Actors In Social Work Role-Play Simulations, Helen E. Petracchi Dec 1999

Using Professionally Trained Actors In Social Work Role-Play Simulations, Helen E. Petracchi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The literature available to social work educators contains limited discussion of the use of role play simulation in the classroom. This paper presents the experiences of first-year MSW students in a foundation generalist practice class who were evaluated using role play for their final examination. In a unique arrangement, clients in these simulations were role-played by firstyear acting students from the university's theater arts department. The reaction of the social work students to role play with professionally trained actors is described and discussed from voluntarily submitted descriptions of the experience.

Popular And Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View, Peter Swirski Dec 1999

Popular And Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View, Peter Swirski

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Popular and Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View," Peter Swirski discusses the role and status of popular fiction in contemporary culture. Starting with the basic question, "Who needs popular fiction?," he surveys select sociological evidence and prevailing aesthetic arguments in order to take stock of the ways in which highbrow literature and popular fiction relate to each other. He begins with statistical and socio-economic data which casts a different lights on many myths prevailing in scholarship as well as in general social and cultural discourse, such as the death of the novel, the alleged decline of the reading …

Théophile Gautier And The Orient, F. Elizabeth Dahab Dec 1999

Théophile Gautier And The Orient, F. Elizabeth Dahab

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Théophile Gautier and the Orient," F. Elizabeth Dahab discusses the function of the Orient in general, and in particular, the function of Ancient Egypt in some of Gautier's contes fantastiques written between 1835 and 1857. Gautier and many of his contemporaries including Baudelaire wanted to escape from a society dominated by the idea of progress. They expressed deep doubt in many of their texts and strived to find solace in the notion of permanence in art characteristic of Ancient Egyptian architecture and mortuary customs. They also believed that Ancient Egypt may provide an answer to humanity's quest …

Clash Of The Titans: Regulating The Competition Between Established And Emerging Electronic Payment Systems, Jane Kaufman Winn Dec 1999

Clash Of The Titans: Regulating The Competition Between Established And Emerging Electronic Payment Systems, Jane Kaufman Winn

Articles

This article equates the providers of traditional electronic payment services with the Titans of Greek mythology, and the providers of new electronic payment technologies with the Olympians. Professor Winn concludes, however, that unlike the Titans of Greek mythology, these modern Titans appear to be winning in their battle with the upstart Olympians. This article describes the fundamental characteristics of payment systems, reviews the applicable law, and describes the new technologies that were, until quite recently, expected to displace older electronic payment systems. Professor Winn finds that consumers and merchants, by and large, are happy with the existing regulatory structure. And, …
