Profile: Buildings And Billboards...Preserving Our Excellence While Building For Our Future, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

"There is no doubt in my mind that the work and progress of our college will move forward steadily in the coming months. Teachers will enter their classrooms, the lights will be on, the buildings clean and functional, students will be in their seats, textbooks and food will be available for their nourishment, residence halls will be functional and welcoming, class lists and reading lists will be passed around: learning will happen."

Managers Of Medicine: The Interplay Between Mcos, Quality Of Care, And Tort Reform, Carl Giesler Oct 1999

Managers Of Medicine: The Interplay Between Mcos, Quality Of Care, And Tort Reform, Carl Giesler

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This paper examines Corporate Health and argues the policy wisdom of imposing malpractice liability on MCOs. Part II chronicles the effective control MCOs exercise over medical care decisions. Part III discusses states' non-tort regulations of MCOs and their ineffectiveness in making MCOs accountable for that control. Part IV then argues that the policy behind MCO tort liability makes sense and that Congress should clearly authorize states to impose malpractice liability on MCOs whose decisions negatively impact patients' medical treatment. Tort liability forces MCOs to consider the nonmonetary costs of negligent medical necessity decisions borne by man- aged care consumers and …

This report is designed to provide a snapshot of the local, state and federal management framework for the estuaries of the state. Natural resource management, land use regulation, research, education and funding are all important pieces of this framework, and each is reviewed in relation to specific problems of the estuaries. The report first summarizes the issues and potential issues confronting the estuaries and then reviews the existing policies and programs aimed at dealing with these issues.

Temperature Dependence Of Electrical And Optical Modulation Responses Of Quantum-Well Lasers, T. Keating, Xiaomin Jin, Shun Lien Chuang, K. Hess Oct 1999

Temperature Dependence Of Electrical And Optical Modulation Responses Of Quantum-Well Lasers, T. Keating, Xiaomin Jin, Shun Lien Chuang, K. Hess

Electrical Engineering

We present theory and experiment for high-speed optical injection in the absorption region of a quantum-well laser and compare the results with those of electrical injection including the carrier transport effect. We show that the main difference between the two responses is the low-frequency roll-off. By using both injection methods, we obtain more accurate and consistent measurements of many important dynamic laser parameters, including the differential gain, carrier lifetime, K factor, and gain compression factor. Temperature-dependent data of the test laser are presented which show that the most dominant effect is the linear degradation of differential gain and injection efficiency …

Reading, Writing And Service Learning, National Helpers Network, Inc.

School K-12

Cross-age tutoring programs, like the National Helpers Network's "Helpers Promoting Literacy" model, in which middle and high school students serve as reading tutors to younger children, have been popular fixtures in many school service learning programs in recent years. Described by many as "win-win" programs because both the "tutors" and the "tutees" improve their reading skills as a result of participating, these programs are often integrated into English and language arts curricula and give students the opportunity to learn by teaching. But a look at programs throughout the nation shows that service learning practitioners are expanding on that idea and …
