Chinese And Australian Conversational Styles: A Comparative Sociolinguistic Study Of Overlap And Listener Response, Xudong Deng

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study compares the use of overlap and listener response by Chinese and Australian speakers in their respective intracultural conversations, that is, in conversations between Chinese interlocutors in Mandarin Chinese and between Australians in Australian English. The main purpose of this study is to locate similarities and differences between these two groups of speakers in their use of the two conversational strategies. Another major theme of the thesis is to examine the role of gender in the use of overlap and listener response in conversations of the two languages. The study is based upon the theoretical premise of interactional sociolinguistics …

The Construction Of A Particular Version Of The Modern Indonesian Women In Contemporary Indonesian Women's Magazines, Rachmah Ida

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis analyses the representation of women in two women’s magazines in Indonesia. It compares and contrasts the representation of women under the New Order Regime (1966-1998) and the Reformasi (reformation) period (1998-1999) through an analysis of the content of Kartini and Femina, between 1992 and 1998. It seeks to understand how changes in the representation of women are specifically related to the social, economic, and political changes in Indonesia. Moreover, by analysing the cultural production of a particular popular media [women’s magazines], this study examines the explicit characteristics of Indonesian women that have been identified as “modern” in the …

Patriarchy, Authority And Exclusion From Full Participation Of Women In The Orthodox Church, Leonie B. Liveris

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

From 1948, when the Orthodox churches became members of the World Council of Churches, the "woman question" has been debated and researched through various assemblies, consultations and programmes. The general attitude of Orthodox Church hierarchs on the debate of the 'woman question' is that it is an imposition from the West and therefore any changes for the Church to be active in improving the status of women are not under serious consideration. The question of changing roles in the ministry of women is one of the most contentious issues in the ecumenical movement for the Orthodox Church. The Orthodox member …

Effects Of Joint Trials On The Proportion Of Guilty Verdicts Assigned To Defendants, Stacy Lyn Gall Jan 1999

Effects Of Joint Trials On The Proportion Of Guilty Verdicts Assigned To Defendants, Stacy Lyn Gall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

When two or more people are alleged to have committed a crime together they are automatically tried together in a joint trial. Defendants can apply to have a joint trial severed into separate trials, but they are rarely granted. However, joint trials might be biasing against defendants in that they might have a greater likelihood of obtaining aguilty verdict than if they had separate trials. A review of the literature indicated that authors have several hypotheses why joint trials might be biasing, though there is no conclusive evidence that this is the case. This study used a mock juror paradigm …

The aim of this study is to investigate the code-switching of native speakers of Japanese in an English-speaking context. The languages involved in code-switching therefore are English and Japanese. This is an instance of communication in the participants' first language, in a setting where the speakers' second language is dominant. The research focused on a sample of twelve Japanese people. These participants were born in Japan, and their parents' native language is Japanese. Even though the length of time each has spent in residence in an English-speaking country varies, the minimum is two years. Further, all have previously studied English, …

Psychological Assessment For The Courts : A Survey Of Psychologists, Mary-Anne Martin Jan 1999

Psychological Assessment For The Courts : A Survey Of Psychologists, Mary-Anne Martin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The literature relevant to legal standards in criminal, family, and civil settings in relation to psychological assessments for the courts is reviewed. Although over the past twenty years, a number of specialised forensic instruments have been developed for use in forensic settings, it appears that they are infrequently used. Surveys of test use patterns reveal that psychological test use in forensic settings is virtually identical to that in clinical settings, despite the different nature of the referral questions. The debate about the use of psychological tests in forensic assessments, and research on the use of tests in these assessments is …

The Effects Of Budget Emphasis, Budgetary Participation, Trust And Organisational Commitment On Job Related Tension And Propensity To Create Slack : Empirical Evidence From Norway, Christin S. Buckland Jan 1999

The Effects Of Budget Emphasis, Budgetary Participation, Trust And Organisational Commitment On Job Related Tension And Propensity To Create Slack : Empirical Evidence From Norway, Christin S. Buckland

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Results of early studies (eg. Hopwood, 1972; Otley, 1978) on the effects of supervisory styles on subordinates’ job related tension have been contradictory. Subsequent studies using the contingency model to resolve these conflicting results have identified budgetary participation (Brownell, 1982a) and trust (Ross, 1994) as important moderating variables. With respect to participation, a number of prior studies found that a compatible combination of high budget emphasis and high participation was associated with better behavioural outcomes (eg. lower job related tension), than other combinations of budget emphasis and participation. Yet there has been relatively little research to investigate why this particular …

Consideration is given to its values and benefits. In the heuristic style, the research focusses on the active imagination work of the researcher and four research participants. The active imagination case material of the five participants is summarised and depictions of their material are included which identify the nature, essence, and meaning of their experiences. …

Reading Dorothy Hewett As Boundary Writer, Carmel M. Grahame Jan 1999

Reading Dorothy Hewett As Boundary Writer, Carmel M. Grahame

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis locates the writings of Dorothy Hewett in a firm relationship with postmodern thought. The argument focuses on evidence that the dominant aesthetic of Hewett's writing is the feminine sublime which comprises a commitment to uncertainty. In this modality, reason does not foreclose on the action of the imagination in the sublime moment. The revised dynamic is explored with an emphasis on the radical nature of the doubt in question. It reflects a deliberate resistance to certainty, and fol1ows from Hewett's early experience with communism. At a formal level, in Hewett's texts, the commitment to uncertainty is not least …

The Literacy-Related Knowledge Of The Children In Two Western Australian Preprimary Centres And The Literacy-Related Practices In Their Homes, Susan M. Beilharz Jan 1999

The Literacy-Related Knowledge Of The Children In Two Western Australian Preprimary Centres And The Literacy-Related Practices In Their Homes, Susan M. Beilharz

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigates both the literacy-related knowledge of two groups of children beginning their preprimary education and the literacy-related practices identified by their parents as taking place in their homes. The two groups of children were attending preprimary centres located in different suburbs of Perth; one was in a low socio-economic status northern suburb and the other was in a high socio-economic status inner metropolitan suburb. The results of a questionnaire about family literacy practices showed that there was a wide range of literacy-related practices and materials available in the majority of the households involved in the study. The results …

Burnout Among Western Australian Psychologists : Exploring Issues Within Forensic Psychology As Potential Predictors, Claire L. Lynn Jan 1999

Burnout Among Western Australian Psychologists : Exploring Issues Within Forensic Psychology As Potential Predictors, Claire L. Lynn

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The level of burnout among a sample of Western Australian psychologists and a comparison of scores to the American normative sample of mental health workers was investigated. The study was also particularly interested to explore whether issues pertinent to the forensic psychologist were predictive of burnout. Burnout was measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which comprises three components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low personal accomplishment The study explored whether characteristics in relation to the psychologist, the client and the workplace had predictive value for the level of burnout. Variables considered across these characteristics were age and gender, client problem …

The Good Language Class: Teacher Perceptions, Rosemary Senior Jan 1999

The Good Language Class: Teacher Perceptions, Rosemary Senior

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This is a qualitative, descriptive study of group processes in classes of adult language learners, viewed from the perspective of practising teachers. The study has an internal narrative which takes the reader through the process of the research, from the initial question raised by a casual classroom conversation to the discussion chapter which questions a number of assumptions underlying current English language teaching practices within western educational contexts. The study falls into two distinct phases. The first phase uses the constant comparative method of data collection and analysis to integrate the perceptions of 28 experienced language teachers into the following …

Teaching And Learning In Higher Education : Nurturing Critical Reflection For Bridging Theory/Practice Links : A Case Study In Social Work Education, Gary Keith Ovington Jan 1999

Teaching And Learning In Higher Education : Nurturing Critical Reflection For Bridging Theory/Practice Links : A Case Study In Social Work Education, Gary Keith Ovington

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The 1990s has witnessed two 'institutions' in 'crisis': higher education and social work. In higher education. government has brandished its quality sword and the long-neglected area of teaching is prominent in the war cry. In social work, major stakeholders have constructed the crisis as the 'theory/practice problematic' and the systemic intervention has been the prima facie increasing power of non-academic bodies to shape social work curriculum. This study is set within this context of quality teaching and theory/practice issues. It is an action research study of the teaching and learning dynamic of a first year social work subject which seeks …

A Windows Program For Airfoil Design Using B-Splines, Matthew Maclean Jan 1999

A Windows Program For Airfoil Design Using B-Splines, Matthew Maclean

Theses

The objective of this thesis has been threefold. First, the formulation of splines has been studied and their development into a computer algorithm has been implemented. Splines represent a powerful concept in computer modeling and geometric representation, for, as parametric curves, they provide a compact way to store the information defining a curve or surface. B-splines have been exclusively used in this thesis, although other types of splines exist. The second goal of this thesis was to learn and utilize C++ as a programming tool in the demonstration of B-spline techniques. C++ was chosen because it is object-oriented, and because …

Progressing Towards A Uniform Commercial Code For Electronic Commerce Or Racing Toward Nonuniformity?, Maureen A. O'Rourke Jan 1999

Progressing Towards A Uniform Commercial Code For Electronic Commerce Or Racing Toward Nonuniformity?, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

The Magaziner Report encourages the development of a consistent commercial law environment against which electronic commerce transactions may take place. The author considers the current legal landscape, noting that while many efforts are underway to codify aspects of electronic commerce, these efforts are piecemeal in nature and may lead to the very lack of uniformity against which the Magaziner Report counsels. The author then briefly considers what lessons may be learned from the drafting history of the original U.C.C. as well as proposed Article 2B (now the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act) governing transactions in computer information. She argues that …

Preface: Electronic Medical Information: Privacy, Liability And Quality Issues, Frances H. Miller Jan 1999

Preface: Electronic Medical Information: Privacy, Liability And Quality Issues, Frances H. Miller

Faculty Scholarship

This symposium issue explores the timely topic of health care information and information technology, and their impact on health care delivery. The potential for mischief in this area has been the subject of many a dire prediction, but documented instances of negligence or abuse are thus far relatively rare. As information technology becomes more and more sophisticated and pervasive, however, legal problems are increasingly possible-if not probable-and these articles examine a wide range of issues related to the phenomenon.

Shortage And Tension On The Upper Rio Grande: Protecting Endangered Species During Times Of Drought, Comments From The Perspective Of The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, Maria O'Brien Jan 1999

Shortage And Tension On The Upper Rio Grande: Protecting Endangered Species During Times Of Drought, Comments From The Perspective Of The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, Maria O'Brien

Faculty Scholarship

Looking back at the drought of 1996 and at the efforts to protect endangered species in the midst of the drought, the most glaring fact remains that the water managers and users of the Rio Grande were in crisis management. In fact, despite some efforts, if the drought had manifested with equal or greater intensity in 1997, we would have remained in crisis management. Hence, as we move forward and examine lessons learned, the most vital premise we must return to is the imperative for balance as we undertake the precarious task of allocating water to protect endangered species, serve …

Cascade: Computer Aided Synchronization Of Code And Documentation, Mark Roth Jan 1999

Cascade: Computer Aided Synchronization Of Code And Documentation, Mark Roth

Theses

Complete, accurate and up-to-date documentation is a critical factor in the development and maintenance of robust software products. Often, however, the documentation and the product diverge over time, leading to inconsistencies that are the source of confusion and faults, which can lead to failure. This thesis addresses the inconsistency problem by describing a standard method for the synchronization of documentation with code. As part of the thesis, existing research in the field of Document Engineering is surveyed and related to the method being developed. One goal of this approach is to create straightforward integration with existing languages, coding styles, and …
