Effect Of Simultaneous Zinc And Vitamin A Supplementation On The Biochemical Indices Of Vitamin A Nutriture, Morbidity, And Growth In Bangladeshi Children: A Randomized, Double Blind, Placebo Controlled Trial, Mohammad Mujibur Rahman Jan 1999

Effect Of Simultaneous Zinc And Vitamin A Supplementation On The Biochemical Indices Of Vitamin A Nutriture, Morbidity, And Growth In Bangladeshi Children: A Randomized, Double Blind, Placebo Controlled Trial, Mohammad Mujibur Rahman

All ETDs from UAB

This study evaluated whether combined zinc and vitamin A supplementation would improve the biochemical indexes of vitamin A nutriture, reduce morbidity, and enhance growth in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention trial. Eight hundred children aged 12–35 months were randomly assigned to one of the four intervention groups: (1) zinc, (2) vitamin A, (3) zinc and vitamin A (zinc plus vitamin A), or (4) placebo. The zinc group received 20 mg of elemental zinc as syrup once daily for 14 days. The vitamin A group received a 200,000 IU (60 mg) vitamin A capsule on Day 14. The placebo group received …

Cognitive Ability And Its Association With Early Childbearing And Second Teen Births, Darlene Louise Shearer Jan 1999

Cognitive Ability And Its Association With Early Childbearing And Second Teen Births, Darlene Louise Shearer

All ETDs from UAB

Despite efforts to reduce the incidence of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in the U.S., it remains a pressing social concern and public health problem. Indeed, births to women under 20 continue to constitute one of every seven births in this country and remain higher than teen birth rates in comparable industrialized nations. The literature clearly indicates that factors such as (a) early initiation of sexual activity, (b) lack of appropriate reproductive knowledge, (c) limited educational aspirations, (d) low self-esteem, and (e) family poverty increase the likelihood that an adolescent will begin early childbearing and that she will subsequently have at …

Paving The Way For Collaboration Between Librarians And Faculty, Cynthia Wright Swaine

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

This paper summarizes some of the traditional, as well as newer, ways that academic librarians can interact with faculty and thereby demonstrate what they have to offer in future collaborative efforts. Examples are drawn from the author's experience at Old Dominion University (Virginia). Highlights include: university service, including librarians serving on the faculty senate, committees, task forces, and interest groups; communications, including library newsletters; workshops, seminars, and forums for faculty and graduate students; events for new faculty, including participation in university-wide orientation; library instruction, including course-related library instruction and learning communities; collection development, including librarian attendance at faculty meetings of …

Critical Of Race Theory: Race, Reason, Merit And Civility, Nancy Levit Jan 1999

Critical Of Race Theory: Race, Reason, Merit And Civility, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

A hazard lurks in any but the most careful representation of another's viewpoint. Call it "slippage" or the "essentialist error," the point is that communication rarely does complete justice to its object. The problem is compounded when the communication is mediated. We all know that between a story and its retelling, something will get lost in translation. Consider feminism, gay legal theory, and critical race theory, and their depictions in academic journals and the popular media. Newspapers and news magazines have recently published a spate of academic trash talk accusing critical race theorists of "playing the race card" and indulging …

Variations In The Ventral Ciliature Of The Crustacean Symbiont Hyalophysa (Ciliophora, Apostomatida) From Mobile Bay And Dauphin Island, Alabama, Stephen C. Landers, Michael A. Zimlich, Tom Coate

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Apostome ciliates are symbiotic organisms whose life cycles are complex and involve specific feeding, divisional, migratory, and phoretic stages. In this study we examined apostome trophonts (the diagnostic stage) from a variety of crustacean hosts in the Mobile Bay and Dauphin Island, Alabama, area. The hosts were grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio and P. paludosus), striped hermit crab (Clibanarius vittatus), blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), and pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus (=Penaeus) duorarum). A number of similar but distinct morphotypes of apostomes were present, those corresponding to descriptions of species of Hyalophysa as well …

Salinity Action Plan : Wetland Vegetation Monitoring, 1998/1999, R. Gurner, G. Ogden, R. H. Froend

Research outputs pre 2011

This report represents the vegetation component of a project designed to provide on-going monitoring of wetland salinity and biological resources in wetlands of the agricultural zone of south-west Western Australia. Maintenance of wetland biological diversity in the agricultural zone is one of the major objectives of the Salinity Action Plan. Due to their low position in the landscape, wetlands are the habitat most affected by salinisation...
