Improving Map Literacy: The Application Of Second Language Instruction Views And Techniques, Heather Anne Rayner Jan 1999

Improving Map Literacy: The Application Of Second Language Instruction Views And Techniques, Heather Anne Rayner

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Maps are a common and useful tool, yet many people do not know how to use them effectively. Map education has typically been inadequate for teaching people the skills involved in map use and map reading. Map education in schools, where people typically learn their mapping skills, can be improved. This thesis looks at specific ways to improve map education. Based upon previous research, it looks at cartography from a language perspective to determine whether findings from the language research can be applied to cartography, and more specifically to map education. Maps serve to communicate information, and have been compared …

The Cutting Edge Of Poster Law, Michael A. Heller Jan 1999

The Cutting Edge Of Poster Law, Michael A. Heller

Articles

Students place tens of thousands of posters around law schools each year in staircases, on walls, and on bulletin boards. Rarely, however, do formal disputes about postering arise. Students know how far to go-and go no farther despite numerous avenues for postering deviance: blizzarding, megasigns, commercial or scurrilous signs. What is the history of poster law? What are its norms and rules, privileges and procedures? Is poster law effident? Is it just?

Why Did Voters Reject Michigan's Physician-Assisted Suicide Initiative?, Yale Kamisar Jan 1999

Why Did Voters Reject Michigan's Physician-Assisted Suicide Initiative?, Yale Kamisar

Articles

In November 1997, when Oregon voters reaffirmed their support for doctor-assisted suicide, some commentators called it a turning point for the "right to die" movement. But the lopsided defeat of a similar proposal in Michigan is a better barometer: in general, assisted suicide continues to fare badly in the political arena.

Jury Reform At The End Of The Century: Real Agreement, Real Changes, Phoebe C. Ellsworth Jan 1999

Jury Reform At The End Of The Century: Real Agreement, Real Changes, Phoebe C. Ellsworth

Articles

Complaints about the jury system and calls for its reform are nothing new-they have probably existed as long as the jury system itself. Warren Burger called for the reform of the civil jury in 1971'; in 1905 William Howard Taft decried the contemporary tendency "to exalt the jury's power beyond anything which is wise or prudent .... ,2 Judges complain to judges, lawyers complain to lawyers, legal academics write articles about the jury for other legal academics, social scientists report their research on juries to other social scientists, and the jurors themselves go home and express their exasperation to their …

Confessions, Search And Seizure And The Rehnquist Court, Yale Kamisar Jan 1999

Confessions, Search And Seizure And The Rehnquist Court, Yale Kamisar

Articles

About the time William Rehnquist ascended to the Chief Justiceship of the United States, two events occurred that increased the likelihood that Miranda would enjoy a long life. In Moran v. Burbine,' a 6-3 majority held that a confession preceded by an otherwise valid waiver of a suspect's Miranda rights should not be excluded either (a) because the police misled an inquiring attorney when they told her they were not going to question the suspect she called about or (b) because the police failed to inform the suspect of the attorney's efforts to reach him.

Organizational Culture, Tqm, And Business Process Reengineering: An Empirical Comparison, Edward W. Gore Jr. Jan 1999

Organizational Culture, Tqm, And Business Process Reengineering: An Empirical Comparison, Edward W. Gore Jr.

WCBT Faculty Publications

The results of this study underscore the importance of organizational culture and suggest that TQM provides a way to build a culture that supports improvement. Top managers must focus on this role for TQM. Too often the need for quick returns on the effort leads to a focus on the "tools" and specific improvements and this emphasis can work against developing a supportive culture. Reengineering is an example of this phenomenon. Frustration with the time it takes to carry through on a TQM initiative caused firms to try reengineering, which, with its emphasis on outsiders and specialized personnel, works against …

Employers And Employees Beware: The Duties Imposed By The Recent Supreme Court Decisions And Their Impact On Sexual Harassment Law, Jill Kreisberg Jan 1999

Employers And Employees Beware: The Duties Imposed By The Recent Supreme Court Decisions And Their Impact On Sexual Harassment Law, Jill Kreisberg

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The comment examines the Supreme Court's decisions in Faragher and Burlington Industries, which clarified employer liability for sexual harassment by supervisors under Title VII. The Court established that employers are vicariously liable for supervisor harassment, subject to a limited exception if the employer can demonstrate reasonable efforts to prevent misconduct and the employee unreasonably failed to utilize corrective measures. These rulings resolved conflicting lower court standards and emphasized the importance of anti-harassment policies and procedures to address workplace harassment effectively.

Bishop Salvado died that very year, but before his death he secured New Norcia's next Abbot, Dom Fulgentius Torres. Torres' period as abbot of New Norcia …

Development Of Carbon-Metal Oxide Supercapacitors From Sol-Gel Derived Carbon-Ruthenium Xerogels, Chuan Lin, James A. Ritter, Branko N. Popov Jan 1999

Development Of Carbon-Metal Oxide Supercapacitors From Sol-Gel Derived Carbon-Ruthenium Xerogels, Chuan Lin, James A. Ritter, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

Sol-gel derived high surface area carbon-ruthenium xerogels were prepared from carbonized resorcinol-formaldehyde resins containing an electrochemically active form of ruthenium oxide. The electrochemical capacitance of these materials increased with an increase in the ruthenium content indicating the presence of pseudocapacitance associated with the ruthenium oxide undergoing reversible faradaic redox reactions. A specific capacitance of 256 F/g (single electrode) was obtained from a carbon xerogel containing 14 wt % Ru, which corresponded to more than 50% utilization of the ruthenium. The double layer accounted for 40% of this capacitance. This material was also electrochemically stable, showing no change in a cyclic …

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell Jan 1999

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell

Theses : Honours

A discussion of time and image in the shorter poems of William Carlos Williams. The particular focus is Williams' short poems published between the Great War and World War II. The relationship between the form of the poems, and Williams' theories on poetry, as expressed in Spring and All, and The Wedge is examined. In turn, Williams' theories are viewed in the context of Imagism, Objectivist poetics, and the modernist machine aesthetic. Williams' application of these theories is seen to create a poetic form that generates images in the reader's imagination in synchrony with the moment.

A 2d Dwt Architecture Suitable For The Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Algorithm, James Martinez Jan 1999

A 2d Dwt Architecture Suitable For The Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Algorithm, James Martinez

Theses : Honours

Digital Imaging has had an enormous impact on industrial applications such as the Internet and video-phone systems. However, demand for industrial applications is growing enormously. In particular, internet application users are, growing at a near exponential rate. The sharp increase in applications using digital images has caused much emphasis on the fields of image coding, storage, processing and communications. New techniques are continuously developed with the main aim of increasing efficiency. Image coding is in particular a field of great commercial interest. A digital image requires a large amount of data to be created. This large amount of data causes …

Is There A Need For Speed? : Risky Driving Behaviour And Young Male Drivers : A Review Of The Literature, Catherine A. Ferguson Jan 1999

Is There A Need For Speed? : Risky Driving Behaviour And Young Male Drivers : A Review Of The Literature, Catherine A. Ferguson

Theses : Honours

Young male drivers have been identified as a high risk for Motor Vehicle Accident. This paper reviews three components for accident risk: the driving environment, society and individual factors associated with accident histories. Possible predictors for identifying young men at risk for accident involvement are driving behaviour, driving attitude and sensation seeking. Protective factors to reduce the incidence of risky driving in youth might include legal restrictions, increased education and training. The paper recommends that future research tests the above predictors for a relationship with accident involvement in young men.

The Relationship Between Values And Religiosity In Adolescents, Paul F. Russell Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Values And Religiosity In Adolescents, Paul F. Russell

Theses : Honours

The current work examined the areas of religiosity, values and adolescent development. The recent literature with regard to the nature of religiosity as a measure of an individual'' commitment to a particular religion was explored. The issues of measurement and definition were outlined, and a position was taken as to the multi-dimensionality of religiosity. The recent work on values by Schwartz (1992) was also explored. Values were defined and the theory of a universal set of values, as well as the relationship of values to each other was outlined, along with the organisation of those individual values into value types. …

Children's Reactions To Aggressive And Submissive Peers, Natalie Honey

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to investigate children's attitudes towards aggressive and submissive peers. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was used to test the hypotheses. The three between-subjects variables were (a) the label given to the target child (aggressive/submissive) in a vignette, (b) the nature of the behaviour displayed in a critical incident (aggressive/nonaggressive response) as described in a vignette, and (c) the sex of the participants. A sample of 169 Year 6 and 7 students was divided into four groups containing at least 20 girls and 20 boys. A survey was administered to measure the …

An Evaluation Of The Accountancy Program Of De La Salle University, Gina T. Manatigod Jan 1999

An Evaluation Of The Accountancy Program Of De La Salle University, Gina T. Manatigod

DLSU Business & Economics Review

One of the most popular course taken by college freshmen in business schools and colleges is a course leading to a degree in Bachelor of Science Major in Accountancy (BSA). The BSA program normally takes about four years to finish. It culminates in taking one of the toughest licensure examinations given by the government, the CPA board exams. From 1993 to 1998, the highest national passing percentage for this examination was registered only at 21.83%. De La Salle University's (DLSU) performance in the board exams leaves much to be desired. For the same timeframe the highest passing percentage of DLSU …
