The Direct And Indirect Patient Benefits Of Orthopedic Physical Therapy Specialization, Amy Lynne Dipman

Masters Theses

This research surveyed 25% of Orthopedic Certified Specialists to determine the direct and indirect patient benefits resulting from the American Physical Therapy Association specialization process. The newly developed questionnaire included questions pertaining to demographics, professional activities, and professional opinions regarding specialty certification. The results showed a statistically significant relationship between the number of PT’s on staff at a facility and the amount of therapist mentoring. Overall, only 50% of the therapists subjectively reported improved patient care secondary to specialization. The qualitative data showed that many therapists reported providing high quality care prior to specialization. Patients are receiving direct and indirect …

A total of 27 males completed the 4-week HT intervention. Each weekly HT session lasted 30 minutes and consisted of only the chakra connection, Because of the small sample size and the impact of gender on neuroendocrine and immune function, women were not included in this study Dependent variables included well-being as measured by three well-being and two psychological distress instruments, serum serotonin, salivary DHEA and cortisol, and a variety of enumerative and functional measures …

Technology And The 21st Century Battlefield: Recomplicating Moral Life For The Statesman And The Soldier, Charles J. Dunlap Colonel Jan 1999

Technology And The 21st Century Battlefield: Recomplicating Moral Life For The Statesman And The Soldier, Charles J. Dunlap Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author starts from the traditional American notion that technology might offer a way to decrease the horror and suffering of warfare. He points out that historically this assumption is flawed in that past technological advances, from gunpowder weapons to bombers, have only made warfare more--not less--bloody. With a relentless logic, Colonel Dunlap takes to task those who say that the Revolution in Military Affairs has the potential to make war less bloody. He covers the technological landscape from precision-guided munitions and Information Warfare to the use of space for military operations to raise issues that could pose difficult ethical, …

Warriors In Peace Operations, Douglas V. Johnson Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This collection of monographs has been assembled from the 42 Personal Experience Monographs written by the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) Class of 1998. The Personal Experience Monograph program was instituted immediately after the Gulf War with the original purpose of capturing first-person histories of various aspects of that war. The program rapidly expanded to include any military experience that might prove useful to others. When the USAWC Class of 1998 arrived, it was evident that a great many had recent experience in Bosnia that might prove useful to others who would eventually serve there. The collection assembled here was …

A Synthesis For Testability Scheme For Finite State Machines Using Clock Control, Kent L. Einspahr, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth Jan 1999

A Synthesis For Testability Scheme For Finite State Machines Using Clock Control, Kent L. Einspahr, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

A new method is proposed for improving the testability of a finite state machine (FSM) during its synthesis. The method exploits clock control to enhance the controllability and observability of machine states. With clock control it is possible to add new state transitions during testing. Therefore, it is easier to navigate between states in the resulting test machine. Unlike prior work, where clock control is added to the circuit as a postdesign step, here, clock control is considered in conjunction with a symbolic scheme for encoding the states of the FSM. The encoding is shown to result in significant reductions …

A Dual Encryption Protocol For Scalable Secure Multicasting, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok K. Samal Jan 1999

A Dual Encryption Protocol For Scalable Secure Multicasting, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok K. Samal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper we propose a dual encryption protocol for scalable secure multicasting. Multicasting is a scalable solution for group communication. It howevel; poses several unique security problems. We use hierarchical subgrouping to achieve scalability. Third party hosts or members of the multicast group are designated as subgroup managers. They are responsible for secret key distribution and group membership management at the subgroup level. Unlike existing secure multicast protocols, our protocol need not trust the subgroup managers with the distribution of data encryption keys. The dual encryption protocol proposed in this paper distributes encrypted data encryption keys via subgroup managers. …

Routing And Wavelength Assignment (Rwa) With Power Considerations In All- Optical Wavelength-Routed Networks, Maher Ali, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jitender S. Deogun Jan 1999

Routing And Wavelength Assignment (Rwa) With Power Considerations In All- Optical Wavelength-Routed Networks, Maher Ali, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jitender S. Deogun

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) is an important problem that arises in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical networks. Previous studies have solved many variations of this problem under the assumption of perfect conditions regarding the power of a signal. In this paper, we investigate this problem while allowing for degradation of routed signals by components such as taps, multiplexers, and fiber links. We assume that optical amplifiers are preplaced. We investigate the problem of routing the maximum number of connections while maintaining proper power levels. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear program and two-phase hybrid solution approaches employing …

Routing Algorithms For All-Optical Networks With Power Considerations: The Unicast Case, Maher Ali, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jitender S. Deogun Jan 1999

Routing Algorithms For All-Optical Networks With Power Considerations: The Unicast Case, Maher Ali, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jitender S. Deogun

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper, we investigate the problem of routing connections in all-optical networks while allowing for degradation of routed signals by different optical components. To overcome the complexity of the problem, we divide it into two parts. First, we solve the pure RWA problem using fixed routes for every connection. Second, power assignment is accomplished by either using the smallest-gain first (SGF) heuristic or using a genetic algorithm. Numerical examples on a wide variety of networks show that (a) the number of connections established without considering the signal attenuation was most of the time greater than that achievable considering attenuation …

Communication Of Social Support In Computer-Mediated Groups For People With Disabilities, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Vincent R. Waldron, Jerry Finn Jan 1999

Communication Of Social Support In Computer-Mediated Groups For People With Disabilities, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Vincent R. Waldron, Jerry Finn

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study documented the types and extent of social support messages exchanged by persons with disabilities who participated in a computer-based support group. A modified version of Cutrona and Suhr’s (1992) social support category system was used to code 1,472 support messages. The largest percentage of these messages offered emotional and informational support, whereas network support and tangible assistance were least frequently offered. It appeared that many of the support messages directly redressed limitations and challenges associated with disability-related mobility, socialization, and self-care. Results are discussed in terms of the generalizability of existing category systems for coding support to this …

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Ronald Lee, William J. Seiler Jan 1999

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Ronald Lee, William J. Seiler

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Eight years ago, in the first week of the 1991 fall semester, the Acting Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs announced a series of vertical budget cuts that included the elimination of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s department of Speech Communication (now Communication Studies). Over the next seven months the department fought against the proposed action. In March 1992, the Budget Reduction Review Committee voted against the Vice Chancellor’s recommendation. Later in the month, the Academic Planning Committee also voted to rescind the budget cutting measure.

These actions ended the battle and assured the continuation of the department. In an earlier …

The Times, They Are A Changing: A Review Of Raising Children In A Socially Toxic Environment, Susan M. Sheridan, Richard J. Cowan, Tanya Meegan Jan 1999

The Times, They Are A Changing: A Review Of Raising Children In A Socially Toxic Environment, Susan M. Sheridan, Richard J. Cowan, Tanya Meegan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Rarely does a book come along that we believe to be essential reading for all psychologists, educators, child care workers, physicians, clergy, and concerned community members. Garbarino’s Raising Children in a Socially Toxic Environment is one such book. In this book, Garbarino sets out to offer his views on what childhood ought to be, how children map their own worlds (thus define, themselves), what their basic needs are, the levels in which those needs are being met, as well as offer suggestions for ways in which readers can change the “toxic environment” to aid in the healthy development of children …

Using Responsive Evaluation To Evaluate A Professional Conference, Amy N. Spiegel, Roger H. Bruning, Lisa Giddings

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

In a statewide conference on alternative methods for assessing students’ learning, we incorporated responsive evaluation methods into the structure of the conference. The application of these interactive evaluation techniques serves as a pilot study that illustrates the possible utility of these tech-niques in evaluating conferences. This paper provides a brief review of the literature surrounding responsive evaluation, a description of the responsive evaluation methods applied to this conference, and a discussion of the results and implications of this pilot study.

Using Teacher Reflective Practice To Evaluate Professional Development In Mathematics And Science, Vicki L. Wise, Amy N. Spiegel, Roger H. Bruning Jan 1999

Using Teacher Reflective Practice To Evaluate Professional Development In Mathematics And Science, Vicki L. Wise, Amy N. Spiegel, Roger H. Bruning

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Systemic reform has been a key element of the mathematics and science educational agenda for the past decade. Systemic reform proponents advocate emphasizing mathemat-ics and science from kindergarten through l2th grade; adopting new math and science ed-ucation standards; providing ongoing professional development for teachers (Frechtling, Sharp, Carey, & Vaden-Kiernan, 1995); and aligning policy, practice, and assessment pro-cedures. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has supported the development of sys-temic reform by funding statewide, urban, and rural systemic initiatives to improve K–12 mathematics and science education throughout the United States (Fitzsimmons & Kerpel-man, 1994).

Reinforce For Performance: The Need To Go Beyond Pay And Even Rewards, Fred Luthans, Alexander D. Stajkovic Jan 1999

Reinforce For Performance: The Need To Go Beyond Pay And Even Rewards, Fred Luthans, Alexander D. Stajkovic

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Perhaps the most talked about, if not actually implemented. practical solution for making human resources more productive is pay for performance. Yet many researchers and practitioners doubt the true effectiveness of this approach. To help solve this controversy. we suggest drawing from reinforcement theory and behavioral management. This approach can be used to explain the simple statements: You get what you reinforce. but you do not necessarily get what you pay for. We first critically review the traditional pay for performance practices and address the question of whether rewards. not reinforcers. do more harm than good. Next, we discuss the …

Manuscripts And Markets: The Case And Cause Of Authors In Search Of Publishers, Russell J. Ganim Jan 1999

Manuscripts And Markets: The Case And Cause Of Authors In Search Of Publishers, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

In November 1996, the New Yorh Times ran a front page article dealing with the crisis in publishing monographs in the humanities. The piece opened with the experience of a young scholar in Oregon who had sent a book manuscript on Theodor Adorno to a major university press who refused to read it for reasons of "marketability" (Al). As the report continued, it outlined the economic and editorial reasons why many researchers in the humanities, especially at the beginning of their careers, encountered significant difficulty landing contracts at presses that would have published their work in the past. At the …

A Review Of Issues Pertaining To Transgenic Turfgrasses, Paul G. Johnson, Terrance P. Riordan Jan 1999

A Review Of Issues Pertaining To Transgenic Turfgrasses, Paul G. Johnson, Terrance P. Riordan

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Recombinant DNA technology is a rapidly growing field in plant and animal breeding. This technology involves the transfer of pieces of DNA, or genes, regardless of the organisms involved or how they are related. Transformation procedures in plants were first developed for important crop and model plant systems. Although turfgrass management and production is one of the fastest growing areas of agriculture, genetic transformation of turfgrasses lags behind that of many other important crop plants. Turfgrasses are becoming more important primarily because of their association with the ever-increasing urban population. The size of the turfgrass seed market is second only …

The Certified Safe Farm Project In Nebraska: The First Year, Jerry Jaspersen, Susanna Von Essen, Pam List, Larry Howard, David Morgan Jan 1999

The Certified Safe Farm Project In Nebraska: The First Year, Jerry Jaspersen, Susanna Von Essen, Pam List, Larry Howard, David Morgan

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Potentially preventable death, disabling injury, and serious illness are very common secondary to work in production agriculture in Nebraska and elsewhere. The traditional approach to farm safety has consisted largely of education designed to prevent traumatic injury. While education is of critical importance, additional incentives may be needed to reduce fatal and non-fatal events to an acceptable level. The Certified Safe Farm concept was developed in collaboration with two Nebraska health insurance companies. The program consists of combining an on-farm safety assessment and occupational health screening with an education program. The incentive to complete this program is to be eligible …
