Guide For Developing Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plans In Oregon, Maribeth Gibbons, Mark Rosenkranz, Harry L. Gibbons, Mark Sytsma Jan 1999

Guide For Developing Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plans In Oregon, Maribeth Gibbons, Mark Rosenkranz, Harry L. Gibbons, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

This manual focuses on controlling nuisance aquatic plants, occurring in Oregon lakes. To use this manual, it is necessary to distinguish between an aquatic plant problem, and a water quality enrichment problem that typically results in excessive algae production (See Box this page). The most serious type of aquatic plant problem is caused by invasion of a waterbody by a non-native species. Non-native weed invaders may flourish in suitable conditions and degrade habitat and other beneficial uses. The biology and ecology of weeds allows them to fluorish under a wide range of conditions. Nutrient enrichment is not a prerequisite for …

The Hedgehog And The Fox: Distinguishing Public And Private Sector Approaches To Managing Risk For Internet Transactions, Jane Kaufman Winn Jan 1999

The Hedgehog And The Fox: Distinguishing Public And Private Sector Approaches To Managing Risk For Internet Transactions, Jane Kaufman Winn

Articles

In his essay The Hedgehog and the Fox, Isaiah Berlin used an ancient Greek proverb comparing these animals as a metaphor to express a deep division among thinkers and writers in their understanding of the human condition. In this essay, I extend the metaphor to contrast the differing approaches to risk management taken by the public sector in the exercise of its sovereign functions and that taken by members of the private sector in the conduct of commercial transactions. In light of the differences in these basic approaches to questions of risk management, I will evaluate some widely discussed …

Aquatic Vegetation In Irrigation Canals, Mark Sytsma, Michael Parker Jan 1999

Aquatic Vegetation In Irrigation Canals, Mark Sytsma, Michael Parker

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Preparation of this guidance manual for integrated aquatic vegetation management in irrigation canals was stimulated, in large part, by the accidental release of acrolein-treated irrigation water into Bear Creek in southern Oregon. The resulting fish kill brought into focus the need to examine the methods available for managing aquatic vegetation in flowing water. Furthermore, it demonstrated the need for technical assistance on aquatic vegetation management in Oregon. Vegetation management in flowing water is a difficult undertaking. The interconnectedness of natural and manmade water conveyance systems, the tenuous status of many aquatic species, and the necessity of water delivery for profitable …

Genetic Variation In Two Populations Of The Brown Ear Tick, Rhipicephalus Appendicula Tus, In Kenya, Frederick N. Baliraine Jan 1999

Genetic Variation In Two Populations Of The Brown Ear Tick, Rhipicephalus Appendicula Tus, In Kenya, Frederick N. Baliraine

All Master’s Theses

Several studies have shown that Rhipicephalus appendiculatus from geographically isolated areas differ in their susceptibilities to Theileria paIva, the haemoprotozoan causative agent of East Coast Fever. In Kenya, R. appendiculatus from Muguga have been reported to be less susceptible to T parva infection than those from Rusinga Islands. As the same tick species from different areas shows variation in vector competence, it was considered to be of epidemiological interest to determine whether these tick populations are genetically different. Most population genetic studies have been done by comparing protein electrophoretic patterns, and more recently by DNA analysis. However, all available techniques …

Data obtained from regular field samples throughout the life cycle of Chilo partellus in three experimental sites; Ungoye, Mbita point and Kuja river, were used to construct life tables. Key factor analysis was conducted to determine the key mortality factors. Results showed little variation in the total inter-generation mortality expressed as 100rx at all the three developmental stages of C.partellus. The mean values obtained ranged from 89.35%-98.1 %,86.1 %-99.8% and 91.7%-96.03% for Kuja river, Mbita point and Ungoye respectively. The most common cause of mortality was classified as disappearance whereas parasitism contributed minimally to the C.partellus mortality at all the …

Diverse Perspectives And The Religion Clauses: An Examination Of Justifications And Qualifying Beliefs, Kent Greenawalt Jan 1999

Diverse Perspectives And The Religion Clauses: An Examination Of Justifications And Qualifying Beliefs, Kent Greenawalt

Faculty Scholarship

Some of the most complex questions about constitutional provisions governing religion concern the status of various kinds of convictions. Put most simply, how do undoubted religious convictions compare with convictions that appear to have little to do with religion, with convictions that derive from negative answers to religious questions, and with convictions that seem to be on some borderline of what may count as religion? In this Essay, I focus on two kinds of questions about this range of convictions.

Part I of the Essay explores justifications underlying the religion clauses of federal and state constitutions. It asks how explicitly …

Taking The "I" Out Of "Team": Intra-Firm Monitoring And The Content Of Fiduciary Duties, Eric L. Talley Jan 1999

Taking The "I" Out Of "Team": Intra-Firm Monitoring And The Content Of Fiduciary Duties, Eric L. Talley

Faculty Scholarship

Depending on whom one asks, the last decades' proliferation of statutory business structures is a cause for either celebration or concern. Some laud this recent trend, arguing that a highly permutated menu of tax treatments, liability limitations, and governance hierarchies facilitates the alignment of legal status with organizational need. Others view statutory variety more skeptically, warning that it may simply portend greater cost externalization, strategic behavior, and distributional inequity. But one set of legal doctrines has persisted throughout: the concept of fiduciary duty. Indeed, fiduciary obligations remain fundamental to the legal governance structure of virtually every statutory business entity.

That …

Degradation Of Explosives In Solution Using Bacteria, A Fungus (Phanerochaete Chrysosporium), Titanium Dioxide, Ozone, And Electrochemical Peroxidation, Stéphane Debost Jan 1999

Degradation Of Explosives In Solution Using Bacteria, A Fungus (Phanerochaete Chrysosporium), Titanium Dioxide, Ozone, And Electrochemical Peroxidation, Stéphane Debost

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As a result of munitions manufacturing and decommissioning, explosive compounds have contaminated groundwater and soils at many sites throughout the U.S. and worldwide. Three of the most commonly occurring explosive contaminants are TNT, ROX, and HMX. Many processes, biological as well as physical, have been developed to remediate the contaminated material. But feasibility studies rarely take into account the three contaminants at once. We chose four of the technologies used to remediate explosives-contaminated water and studied comparatively their effectiveness and efficiency in degrading TNT, ROX, and HMX in solution at their maximal solubilities. The chosen technologies were bacterial and fungal …

Sex, Violence, And Hand Puppets: History And Structure Of Punch And Judy Performance Tradition, James Robert Davis Jan 1999

Sex, Violence, And Hand Puppets: History And Structure Of Punch And Judy Performance Tradition, James Robert Davis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Punch and Judy are characters who exist only within the boundaries of the puppet theatre, in performances where characters are portrayed by inanimate figures. Nonetheless, the history of the puppet theatre, and particularly that of Punch and Judy, is closely related to the history of more widely accepted, actor-based theatre, where characters are portrayed by human beings. While the two traditions-share many common elements--such as the importance of characterization, direction, and design--the essential difference between actor-theatre and puppetry is the manner in which the performance is presented. The approach of this study is threefold: first, a linear history of the …

The Relationship Between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Aggression In Children: A Cross-Sectional Study, Eric Wayne Boelter Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Aggression In Children: A Cross-Sectional Study, Eric Wayne Boelter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the correlation between aggression and ADHD symptoms across several age groups in children. Participants were elementary and secondary students recruited from grades 1st through 12th in a suburban, university-affiliated laboratory school (N = 426). The students' teachers also participated in the study. The study consisted of administering questionnaires to students and teachers. These included: (a) The Self-Report Inventory, (b) The Peer Nomination Inventory, and (c) The Teacher Report Inventory. All of these measures were designed for this study. One way analysis of variance for gender showed that males were more aggressive and had more ADHD symptoms than …

Farewell To An Idea? Ideology In Legal Theory, David Charny Jan 1999

Farewell To An Idea? Ideology In Legal Theory, David Charny

Michigan Law Review

In 1956, Morocco inaugurated a constitutional democratic polity on the Western model. Elections were to be held, and political parties formed, with voters to be registered by party. The Berbers, however, did not join the parties as individual voters. Each Berber clan joined their chosen party as a unit. To consecrate (or, perhaps, to accomplish) the clan's choice, a bullock was sacrificed. These sacrificial rites offer a useful parable about the relationship between law and culture. The social order imposed by law depends crucially on the "culture" of the participants in the system - their habits, dispositions, views of the …

Lawyers, Law, And Contract Formation: Comments On Daniel Keating's 'Exploring The Battle Of The Forms In Action', Robert K. Rasumssen Jan 1999

Lawyers, Law, And Contract Formation: Comments On Daniel Keating's 'Exploring The Battle Of The Forms In Action', Robert K. Rasumssen

Michigan Law Review

Attempting to infuse the austerity of theory with a dose of reality, an intrepid group of legal scholars has left the security of the office and ventured into the work-a-day world of commercial practices. The information that they have gathered and are sharing with the rest of us is furthering our understanding of the interaction between commercial law and commercial practice. Embedded in much of the research they have generated is the not-so-flattering conclusion that law professors suffer from a self-serving bias. Those of us in the academy engage in the assumption, often unstated or even unacknowledged, that the law …

A Model For World Wide Web-Based Asynchronous Laboratory Learning In Engineering Education., Prashanth Kumar Salur

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

World Wide Web based Asynchronous Learning, a new concept in distance learning is gaining large scale acceptance among a number of universities and has become a basis for project work in various universities, colleges and even business enterprises. Asynchronous means that participants in a discussion need not engage in that discussion at the same time, a method to achieve high degree of interactivity among geographically separated learners independent of time or place. This project aims to develop such an Asynchronous Learning environment for laboratory learning containing interactive exercises with simulation experiences. Interactive exercises have been developed with multiple-choice questions and …

Progressing Towards A Uniform Commercial Code For Electronic Commerce Or Racing Toward Nonuniformity?, Maureen A. O'Rourke Jan 1999

Progressing Towards A Uniform Commercial Code For Electronic Commerce Or Racing Toward Nonuniformity?, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

The Magaziner Report encourages the development of a consistent commercial law environment against which electronic commerce transactions may take place. The author considers the current legal landscape, noting that while many efforts are underway to codify aspects of electronic commerce, these efforts are piecemeal in nature and may lead to the very lack of uniformity against which the Magaziner Report counsels. The author then briefly considers what lessons may be learned from the drafting history of the original U.C.C. as well as proposed Article 2B (now the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act) governing transactions in computer information. She argues that …

Medical Ethics And Human Rights: Legacies Of Nuremberg, George J. Annas, Michael A. Grodin Jan 1999

Medical Ethics And Human Rights: Legacies Of Nuremberg, George J. Annas, Michael A. Grodin

Faculty Scholarship

Many of our most important human rights documents are the product of the world's horror during the carnage of World War II. The broadest and most powerful declaration of human rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was adopted by the membership of the new United Nations in 1948. But there are also much more specific statements of the world's aspirations for all of its inhabitants. August 1997 marked the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the trial of Nazi physicians at Nuremberg, a trial which has been variously designated as the "Doctors' Trial" and the "Medical Case."2 In …

Toward A Formative Project Of Securing Freedom And Equality, Linda C. Mcclain Jan 1999

Toward A Formative Project Of Securing Freedom And Equality, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

This Symposium offers an occasion to pursue two important tasks: (1) identifying normative and constitutional foundations for an affimnative governmental responsibility to engage in a "formative project" that would foster persons' capacities for democratic and personal self-government;' and (2) exploring the mix of normative and empirical inquiries necessary to shape the proper goals and parameters of such a project. These tasks are relevant to my larger project of attempting to develop a synthetic, or feminist and liberal, normative account of rights, responsibilities, and governmental promotion of good, self-governing lives.2 That account argues for governmental responsibility to foster the preconditions for …

The Physiological Effects Of A 12-Week Program Of Progressive Low-Impact Aerobic Dance On Adults With Mental Retardation., David John Cluphf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the physiological effects of a 12 week program of low-impact aerobic dance on adults with mental retardation. Twenty-seven participants were involved in the study and were non-randomly divided into an experimental group (N = 15; 8 male, 7 female) that participated in the exercise program, and a control group (N = 12; 7 male, 5 female) which went about their normal daily activities. The exercise program consisted of a 12-week, progressive, low-impact program of aerobic dance. Each participant underwent a series of field tests to evaluate physical fitness. The tests included the …
