Adoption In The Progressive Era: Preserving, Creating, And Re-Creating Families, Chris Guthrie, Joanna L. Grossman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The history of adoption law and practice has received scant attention from legal scholars and historians. Most of what little scholarship there is focuses on the history of adoption to the mid-nineteenth century, when the first adoption statutes emerged in the United States. Although the enactment of these statutes has been hailed as "an historic moment in the history of Anglo-American family and society" and "the most far-reaching innovation of nineteenth-century custody law," few scholars have made an effort to document the actual operation of adoption law following the enactment of these landmark statutes.
This article does just that. Drawing …

Properties Of An Aluminum Based Multilayered Material Versus Package And Processing Performance, Eoin De Roiste
Theses
Due to a manufacturing issue within the company the lack of knowledge of a key material is highlighted. Research into the material is conducted under seal testing and mechanical properties. The material is multilayered, with aluminium foil as its core plus is top coated and has a sealant layer as its bottom coating. Background literary review commences with a chronological assessment of packaging down through the ages and culminates with details on multilayered materials, concentrating on the type of material being researched. A test plan details the research requirements. Seal testing consists of burst and peel testing of the material …

Assessment Of Hormone-Like Pesticide Exposure And Hormone-Related Organ Cancer Death Among Farm-Related Occupations, Surasak Buranatrevedh
Assessment Of Hormone-Like Pesticide Exposure And Hormone-Related Organ Cancer Death Among Farm-Related Occupations, Surasak Buranatrevedh
All ETDs from UAB
Several pesticides have been reported to contain hormonal properties, especially estrogenic property. Examples of these pesticides are DDT, other organochlorines, and phenoxyherbicides. These pesticides have been reported to be associated with the development of hormone-dependent organ cancers, such as mammary gland and thyroid tumors in animal studies; however, there is no report of an association between specific pesticides and hormone-dependent organ cancers among humans. Farmers who are exposed to pesticides have been found to have a slightly higher risk of cancers. However, the exposure of pesticides are mostly qualitative due to lack of pesticides exposure data among farmers. There is …
Effect Of Simultaneous Zinc And Vitamin A Supplementation On The Biochemical Indices Of Vitamin A Nutriture, Morbidity, And Growth In Bangladeshi Children: A Randomized, Double Blind, Placebo Controlled Trial, Mohammad Mujibur Rahman
All ETDs from UAB
This study evaluated whether combined zinc and vitamin A supplementation would improve the biochemical indexes of vitamin A nutriture, reduce morbidity, and enhance growth in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention trial. Eight hundred children aged 12–35 months were randomly assigned to one of the four intervention groups: (1) zinc, (2) vitamin A, (3) zinc and vitamin A (zinc plus vitamin A), or (4) placebo. The zinc group received 20 mg of elemental zinc as syrup once daily for 14 days. The vitamin A group received a 200,000 IU (60 mg) vitamin A capsule on Day 14. The placebo group received …
Comparative Efficacy Of Neem(Azadirachta Indica) And Amitraz (Mitac) Against The Two Spotted Spider Mites (Tetranychus Urticae), On Tomatoes (Lycopersicum Esculentum), Sophia Shaban Kashenge
Comparative Efficacy Of Neem(Azadirachta Indica) And Amitraz (Mitac) Against The Two Spotted Spider Mites (Tetranychus Urticae), On Tomatoes (Lycopersicum Esculentum), Sophia Shaban Kashenge
All Master’s Theses
Various neem (Azadirachta indica. A. Juss) formulations were evaluated under laboratory and greenhouse conditions for their effects on two-spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Prostigmata: Tetranychidae), on tomatoes, Lycopersicum esculentum. Four neem formulations (Neemros: neem seed powder with 0.5% azadirachtin, Neemroc: a water miscible emulsifiable concentrate oil, with 0.03% azadirachtin, Saroneem: an alcohol extract; extracted in isopropyl alcohol, containing 1% azadirachtin and Neemroc combi: an enriched oil extract with 0.5% azadirachtin) were tested against two-spotted spider mites. Mitac, an acaricide, was used as a standard in the tests. The effective lethal concentration for each formulation against spider mites was established …

Critical Of Race Theory: Race, Reason, Merit And Civility, Nancy Levit

A hazard lurks in any but the most careful representation of another's viewpoint. Call it "slippage" or the "essentialist error," the point is that communication rarely does complete justice to its object. The problem is compounded when the communication is mediated. We all know that between a story and its retelling, something will get lost in translation. Consider feminism, gay legal theory, and critical race theory, and their depictions in academic journals and the popular media. Newspapers and news magazines have recently published a spate of academic trash talk accusing critical race theorists of "playing the race card" and indulging …

Variations In The Ventral Ciliature Of The Crustacean Symbiont Hyalophysa (Ciliophora, Apostomatida) From Mobile Bay And Dauphin Island, Alabama, Stephen C. Landers, Michael A. Zimlich, Tom Coate
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Apostome ciliates are symbiotic organisms whose life cycles are complex and involve specific feeding, divisional, migratory, and phoretic stages. In this study we examined apostome trophonts (the diagnostic stage) from a variety of crustacean hosts in the Mobile Bay and Dauphin Island, Alabama, area. The hosts were grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio and P. paludosus), striped hermit crab (Clibanarius vittatus), blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), and pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus (=Penaeus) duorarum). A number of similar but distinct morphotypes of apostomes were present, those corresponding to descriptions of species of Hyalophysa as well …

Towards More User-Friendly Education For Speakers Of Aboriginal English, Ian G. Malcolm, Yvonne Haig, Patricia Konsignberg, Judith Rochecouste, Glenys Collard, Alison Hill, Rosemary Cahill
Research outputs pre 2011
The project reported on here set out, on a basis of cooperation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal investigators working in university, educational system and classroom contexts, to lead to understandings which would enable a more accessible ("userfriendly") education to be provided for students in primary and secondary schools who are speakers of Aboriginal English.
Specifically, in the context of schools of the Education Department of Western Australia, the project sought to:
1. extend knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal English and its areas of contrast with standard Australian English;
2. provide clarification in the following under-researched areas of Aboriginal English:
a) semantic …

This is the last Conference of the Sixth Circuit in the 1900's. Though the Third Millennium technically does not begin until 2001, the turn of the "odometer" from the 1999 to 2000 leads us all to think of this as the end of a century and of a millennium. The pivotal date is yet sixth months away, but the pundits are already issuing their lists, both profound and trivial - the greatest inventions, the best books, the worst natural catastrophes, the trial of the century (of which there are at least a half dozen), the most influential thinkers, and on …
