The Effects Of Moulting On Muscle Fibre Characteristics Of The Yabby, Cherax Albidus, Tina Marie Lamey Jan 1999

The Effects Of Moulting On Muscle Fibre Characteristics Of The Yabby, Cherax Albidus, Tina Marie Lamey

Theses : Honours

In order to grow, crustaceans must shed their exoskeleton in a process known as "moulting'. Although this process is short and intermittent, it remains dominant over the life of a crustacean. Physiological changes in the period between moults (intermoult) are comparatively quiescent as opposed to the periods directly before and after the actual moult, known as premoult, and postmoult respectively (West, 1997). Moulting is associated with distinct physiological changes including the breakdown of muscle (Musgrove and Geddes, 1985). This muscle breakdown, known as atrophy is the diminution in size of the actual muscle mass and is very specific, occurring to …

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell Jan 1999

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell

Theses : Honours

A discussion of time and image in the shorter poems of William Carlos Williams. The particular focus is Williams' short poems published between the Great War and World War II. The relationship between the form of the poems, and Williams' theories on poetry, as expressed in Spring and All, and The Wedge is examined. In turn, Williams' theories are viewed in the context of Imagism, Objectivist poetics, and the modernist machine aesthetic. Williams' application of these theories is seen to create a poetic form that generates images in the reader's imagination in synchrony with the moment.

Evaluating Oral Histories For Restoration Ecology, Margaret Robertson Jan 1999

Evaluating Oral Histories For Restoration Ecology, Margaret Robertson

Theses : Honours

Significant ecological restoration is required in the agricultural regions of south-western Australia. Environmental history, including local knowledge based on long-term observation of the biophysical environment, can help guide this process. Scientists already use local anecdotal information because other information sources are absent or too recent, yet they are often skeptical of its veracity. This study focused on whether environmental oral histories can be evaluated for factual accuracy and their capacity to be useful in the restoration process. Some of the complexities associated with linking environmental histories with restoration ecology, and the role played by oral histories in establishing the link …

Carmoviruses (Tombusviridae), Feng Qu, Thomas Jack Morris Jan 1999

Carmoviruses (Tombusviridae), Feng Qu, Thomas Jack Morris

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Carmovirus is one of two officially recognized genera of Tombusviridae. Members of Tombusviridae all have icosahedral virions of about 30 nm in diameter with T = 3 symmetry that consists of 180 coat protein (CP) subunits of about 38- 43 kDa and a single-stranded (ss) RNA genome ranging in size from 4.0 to 4.7 kb. Carmoviruses share recognizable sequence similarity in both the polymerase and structural genes with members of the other genus, Tombusvirus. Sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analysis of these genes support the view that the genera are distinct but closely related. In addition, the genome organization of the …

Coordination Of Krna Editing And Polyadenylation In Trypanosoma Brucei Mitochondria: Complete Editing Is Not Required For Long Poly(A) Tract Addition, Kevin T. Militello, Laurie K. Read Jan 1999

Coordination Of Krna Editing And Polyadenylation In Trypanosoma Brucei Mitochondria: Complete Editing Is Not Required For Long Poly(A) Tract Addition, Kevin T. Militello, Laurie K. Read

Biology

Mitochondrial RNAs in Trypanosoma brucei are post-transcriptionally modified by the addition and deletion of uridylate residues in a process called kRNA editing. Unedited, partially edited and fully edited RNAs exist in the steady-state RNA population. Previous experiments have demonstrated that T.brucei mitochondrial RNAs contain both short (~ 20 nt) and long (120-200 nt) poly(A) tracts. However, it is unknown exactly what poly(A) tract lengths are present on unedited, partially edited and fully edited RNAs. To gain insight into the role of the poly(A) tract in T.brucei mitochondria, ribosomal protein S12 (RPS12) RNAs with short and long poly(A) tracts were purified …

Inhibition Of Fibronectin Matrix Assembly By The Heparin-Binding Domain Of Vitronectin, Denise C. Hocking, Jane Sottile, Thomas Reho, Reinhard Fässler, Paula J. Mckeown-Longo Jan 1999

Inhibition Of Fibronectin Matrix Assembly By The Heparin-Binding Domain Of Vitronectin, Denise C. Hocking, Jane Sottile, Thomas Reho, Reinhard Fässler, Paula J. Mckeown-Longo

Biology

The deposition of fibronectin into the extracellular matrix is an integrin-dependent, multistep process that is tightly regulated in order to ensure controlled matrix deposition. Reduced fibronectin deposition has been associated with altered embryonic development, tumor cell invasion, and abnormal wound repair. In one of the initial steps of fibronectin matrix assembly, the amino-terminal region of fibronectin binds to cell surface receptors, termed matrix assembly sites. The present study was undertaken to investigate the role of extracellular signals in the regulation of fibronectin deposition. Our data indicate that the interaction of cells with the extracellular glycoprotein, vitronectin, specifically inhibits matrix assembly …

The Commonweal In The Heartland: Charles T. Kelly And Iowa's Industrial Army, Ryan James Sprau Jan 1999

The Commonweal In The Heartland: Charles T. Kelly And Iowa's Industrial Army, Ryan James Sprau

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Decades before the 1930s, or the period most Americans refer to as the Great Depression, the United States suffered through one of the worst economic crises in national history. While not as devastating nor as prolonged as the economic disaster that affected the United States in the 1930s, the depression that gripped the nation from 1893 to 1897 forced millions out of work. The Commonweal of Christ, more commonly known as the industrial army movement of 1894, offered one solution to the nation's crippling unemployment problem. Crusade founder Jacob S. Coxey planned to lead the nation's unemployed and discontented into …

Exploration Of Immigration, Industrialization & Ethnicity In Waterville, Maine, Amy E. Rowe Jan 1999

Exploration Of Immigration, Industrialization & Ethnicity In Waterville, Maine, Amy E. Rowe

Honors Theses

This paper traces how hegemonic forces create boundaries through the specific examples of the Lebanese and Franco-Americans in Waterville, Maine. These two immigrant groups entered into Waterville after an English-Scottish Protestant majority had already been established in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The Franco-American immigration from Quebec extended well over a century and the flow of people out of Canada can generally be studied into two distinct waves. People were constantly coming into Waterville from Quebec, and a small number would return to live in Canada after a time. It is also critical to understand that Franco-Americans were settling …

The Application Of The Population Approach To Pharmacokinetics In Drug Development, Kimberley Anne Jackson Jan 1999

The Application Of The Population Approach To Pharmacokinetics In Drug Development, Kimberley Anne Jackson

Open Access Dissertations

The population approach to pharmacokinetic involves the estimation of mean pharmacokinetic parameters and their variability within a study population. Advantages of this approach include the ability to i) utilize sparse data, ii) analyze data from large, heterogeneous populations to obtain realistic and relevant estimates of variability and iii) evaluate the influence of patient characteristics on pharmacokinetic estimation.

Sparse data from a phase ill clinical trial of the protease inhibitor, nelfinavir, were used to obtain estimates of the pharmacokinetic parameters and their variability. The effects of patient covariates on the pharmacokinetic parameters of nelfinavir were evaluated. Clearance, estimated from data in …

User-Responsivity And Environment-Sensitivity Consideration For State-Funded Housing In Alain City, Nassra Saif Al Daheri Jan 1999

User-Responsivity And Environment-Sensitivity Consideration For State-Funded Housing In Alain City, Nassra Saif Al Daheri

Theses

Massive housing projects have shown that prospective users are rarely given the opportunity to participate in the design decisions. Subsequently, such schemes commonly fail to accommodate all their needs. In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the housing projects that aim at resettling of Bedouin into newly developed urban communities are state-funded. Many of these houses that were built in the late seventies and early eighties were transferred back to the state (in a very bad condition due to the users random modifications and additions) in exchange of newer better houses. The lack of an adaptive design concept that can accommodate …

Five Myofibrillar Lesion Types In Eccentrically Challenged, Unloaded Rat Adductor Longus Muscle—A Test Model, Joyce L. Thompson, Edward Michael Balog, Robert H. Fitts, Danny A. Riley

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Sarcomere disruptions are observed in the adductor longus (AL) muscles following voluntary reloading of spaceflown and hindlimb suspension unloaded (HSU) rat, which resemble lesions in eccentrically challenged muscle. We devised and tested an eccentric contraction (ECCON) test system for the 14-day HSU rat AL. Six to 7 hours following ECCON, ALs were fixed to allow immunostaining and electron microscopy (EM). Toluidine blue-stained histology semithin sections were screened for lesion density (#/mm2). Serial semithin sections from the ECCON group were characterized for myosin immunointensity of lesions. Five myofibrillar lesion types were identified in histological semithin sections: focal contractions; wide …

The Relationship Between Percent Deficit Ideal Body Weight And The Prevalence, Severity, And Healing Of Pressure Ulcers, Cheryl Anne Masters

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This retrospective study determined whether percent deficit ideal body weight (IBW) was a risk factor for the prevalence, severity or healing of pressure ulcers. This study hypothesized that nursing home residents below their IBW with pressure ulcers have more severe, higher prevalence, and a slower healing rate than resident who are above their IBW. Medical record data were analyzed for all subjects that met the selection criteria from April, 1997 to April, 1998. Fifty-eight subjects aged 39 to 104 years were assigned to one of two groups (Group 1(n=28) were less than 99% of IBW; Group 2 (n=30) were greater …

The Construction And Experience Of Nature: Perspectives Of Urban Youths, Lily Kong, Belinda Yuen, Navjot S. Sodhi, Clive Briffett

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we explore the ways in which young people in a highly urbanised setting experience and develop constructions of nature. We do so by using Singapore as our case study, an Asian context in which urbanisation is total (Singapore's population is totally urbanised), Based on focus group discussions, we conclude that young Singaporeans have little interest in and affinity for nature. This stems from a few factors: growing up in a highly urban environment in which contact with nature is limited; over-protective parents of two-children families who worry about the 'dangers' their children are exposed to when playing …

Seasonal Investigation Of Native Fishes And Their Habitats In Missouri River And Yellowstone River Backwaters, Shannon J. Fisher Jan 1999

Seasonal Investigation Of Native Fishes And Their Habitats In Missouri River And Yellowstone River Backwaters, Shannon J. Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interactions between the Missouri River and its floodplain have been severely degraded due to channelization and impoundment. Ecologists have assumed that backwaters are a critical habitat component for certain life stages of native fishes; however, documented relationships are limited. During this study, I monitored fishes, invertebrates, and habitats to help determine the importance of backwaters to native fishes of various life stages, and to assess the changes that occur in habitat characteristics and invertebrate densities during periods with differential connectivity. Seven assemblages of fishes, identified with catch-per-unit-effort data, had at least some relationship with the backwaters. The assemblages included two …

Five common themes emerged from this study; (a) the participants enjoyed the companionship of pets, (b) the participants found pleasure in feeding the pets, (c) the participants enjoyed petting the animals, (d) most of the participants were unable to care for the animals, and (e) a resident animal would be an important factor in choosing a new nursing home for these participants. This thesis supports the …

The Effect Of Antibiotic And Resistance Education On Patient Knowledge, Karen Niemchick Jan 1999

The Effect Of Antibiotic And Resistance Education On Patient Knowledge, Karen Niemchick

Masters Theses

Our society, which has enjoyed the benefits of antibiotics for over fifty years, is now experiencing an increase in bacterial resistance. One contributing factor is a lack of patient understanding about antibiotics resulting in their inappropriate usage. This study examined the effect of patient education in antibiotics and bacterial resistance on patient knowledge.

Adults from various medical facilities (a student health services clinic, an urgent care office, a family practice, and a community convenience sample) were given a ten-question survey designed to assess their knowledge of antibiotics and resistance. Half of the participants were randomly given an educational brochure to …
