General Diagnosis And Services Developed In The Corral De Piedra Village, San Juan Ermita, Chiquimula, Servin Ardany Flores Galdámez

Theses and Dissertations

The Corral de Piedra community is located in Chiquimula, Guatemala. The main agricultural activities are corn and bean production, small-scale gardens, and small animal production, such as poultry and pigs. The crop areas are predominantly located on lands with slopes between 12 and 55%, presenting low fertility conditions and poor moisture retention capabilities. In addition, local crop varieties have low productivity potentials and the winter season is characterized by poorly distributed and erratic periods of rain. The Benson Institute introduced a technology transfer model to increase and diversify agricultural production, while preserving current natural resources. An integral part of this …

Validation Of The Small Scale Agricultural Production Model In The Community Of Tunshi-San Nicolas, Monica Alexandra Zuniga Donoso Jan 1999

Validation Of The Small Scale Agricultural Production Model In The Community Of Tunshi-San Nicolas, Monica Alexandra Zuniga Donoso

Theses and Dissertations

The model developed in the experimental environment inside the ESPOCH presented satisfactory results. Because of this, it is necessary that the model of production be validated in the farming communities with the purpose of making adjustments before recommending its massive production. In other words, a comparative study should be done on what happened in the experimental farm and what would happen in the community. This is reason why this investigation is titled Validation of the Small-Scale Agricultural Production Model in the Community of Tunshi-San Nicolás. The objectives of the investigation were as follows: Validate the small-scale agricultural production model of …

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 1999

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Gendered social norms and institutions are important determinants of agricultural activities in southwestern Burkina Faso. This paper argues that gendered land tenure, in particular, has effects on equity and efficiency. The usual view of women as holders of secondary, or indirect, rights to land must be supplemented by a more nuanced understanding of tenure. Women's rights are in fact considerably more complex than the simple right to fields from their husbands. First, women's rights to property obtained from men may be coupled with other rights and obligations. In many ethnic groups, women have share rights to the harvest of their …

In Order To Hire The Best Person For The Job, We Have To What?, Brian John Halliday Jan 1999

In Order To Hire The Best Person For The Job, We Have To What?, Brian John Halliday

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This Article will examine the numerous claims of U.S. employers that they cannot fill professional-level job openings with home-grown U.S. workers, and the complaints of those who oppose the importation of foreign professional labor. By shedding some light on these broad questions, we should put into proper perspective the motivating elements behind our ever-changing United States immigration laws, separating the valid impetuses from the rhetoric. This should serve to paint a clearer picture of the actual state of affairs affecting our labor needs, and to suggest courses of action designed to stabilize and to correct the U.S. employment-based immigration system. …

Tourism As Community Development: A Comparative Analysis Of The Vieux Carre And The Lower Garden District From 1950 To 1990, Catherine Mccracken Vesey Jan 1999

Tourism As Community Development: A Comparative Analysis Of The Vieux Carre And The Lower Garden District From 1950 To 1990, Catherine Mccracken Vesey

College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Working Papers, 1991-2000

Employing housing and population data available from the U.S. Census of Housing for 1970 and 1980, we compare block level delineations of gentrification with tract level delineations within several historic neighborhoods of New Orleans, Louisiana. Contrary to Spain's (1992: 132) assertion that block level census data are not adequate to detect the presence of gentrification, a geographical delineation of gentrifying activity during the 1970's is achieved. Methodologically, there are two main findings. First, we display the inadequacies of census tract level definitions of where gentrification is occurring. We conclude that gentrification is a small-scale process that is best examined on …

Of Governments And Governance, A. Michael Froomkin Jan 1999

Of Governments And Governance, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

The Magaziner Report focuses on achieving short-term goals without giving sufficient consideration to long-term consequences affecting the structure of Internet governance and democracy in general. This overly pragmatic approach creates a paradoxical climate: overly-friendly to government intervention (in e-commerce regulation) while also overly willing to defer to privatized governance structures (in other areas). As the recent World Intellectual Property Organization ("WIPO") domain name/trademark process demonstrates, certain Internet governance processes raise several questions, not least discerning whether such processes include adequate notice and consultation. More traditional democratic processes, such as legislation and regulation, have routinized means of giving affected parties notice …
