Introduction: Conflict Resolution And Social Justice, Richard E. Rubenstein Nov 1999

Introduction: Conflict Resolution And Social Justice, Richard E. Rubenstein

Peace and Conflict Studies

A daunting obstacle to clarity in formulating ideas about conflict resolution and social justice is the fact that each of these terms has multiple meanings. There is widespread recognition that "social justice" is a multivalent phrase. Commentators since Aristotle have written of distributive, restitutive, retributive, procedural, and relational justice, and each of these types has been further subdivided to reflect differences in social philosophy and in common usage. Less well recognized is the ambiguity of "conflict resolution," a term that refers to a mélange of theories and practices that, although interrelated, do not constitute a cleanly demarcated and coherently defined …

The Public Stake In Biomedical Research: A Policy Perspective, Karen Matherlee

National Health Policy Forum

An introduction to a Forum series on biomedical research policy issues, this paper provides background on the organization and structure of both public and private research entities. It outlines the federal components, from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to the Department of Veterans Affairs. It also looks at the rapid growth in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device research and development and the varying responses from managed care plans, practice-based research networks, and contract research organizations. After laying out various tensions in the field, such as competition among disease-oriented advocates, alignment of different priorities, allocation of dollars between basic and …

Historical Case Study Of Stella L. Wood, Bonnie G. Ostlund

Theses and Graduate Projects

The focus of this historical case study is to examine the life of Stella Louise Wood, an educator recognized for her leadership in public kindergarten and teacher training in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She spearheaded the campaign for free public kindergartens in the city in 1896, and was the leader of its teacher training school for the following fifty-two years. In that time, Stella Wood shared her strong commitment to the youngest students and her dynamic spirit with over 2,500 teacher trainees, known as Miss Wood's girls. She lived to approve a merger of her school with Macalester College in St. Paul, …

Clean Water Act Compliance Audit Program For Pork Producers: How Was Such An Agreement Between Epa And The National Pork Producers Reached , Anita K. Chancey

Missouri Law Review

A recent agreement between the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Pork Producers Council puts into place a voluntary inspection program that may lead to reduced fines for pork producers who report and correct Clean Water Act violations This agreement represents the first of its kind between an agriculture group and the Environmental Protection Agency.2 This Article explores the background that led to the agreement. The evolution from small family farming to large corporate livestock production, along with the environmental concerns such evolution has produced, is traced. The next section lays out some of the federal and state statutory and …

Light Backscatter Of Milk Products For Transition Sensing Using Optical Fibers, Frederick A. Payne, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Sue E. Nokes, Klat C. Kang Nov 1999

Light Backscatter Of Milk Products For Transition Sensing Using Optical Fibers, Frederick A. Payne, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Sue E. Nokes, Klat C. Kang

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Transition sensors are needed, particularly in the dairy industry, for detecting transitions in pipe flow systems from product-to-water or product-to-product (such as from chocolate to vanilla ice cream mix). Transition information is used to automatically sequence valves to minimize product waste. Optical fibers were used to measure light backscatter between 400 and 950 nm as a function of milk concentration in water and milkfat concentration in milk. The normalized response (100% for product and 0% for water) as a function of product concentration in water was approximately logarithmic for skim milk between 400 and 900 nm and approximately linear for …

Children's Knowledge, Teachers' Knowledge: Implications For Early Childhood Teacher Education, Joy Cullen Nov 1999

Children's Knowledge, Teachers' Knowledge: Implications For Early Childhood Teacher Education, Joy Cullen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

A recent explosion of research on young children's knowledge raises issues for early childhood educators with regard to the extent to which early childhood programs incorporate the knowledge base that children bring to their learning. Recent psychological work on children's domain knowledge reveals early competencies that contribute to subsequent conceptual learning. Studies of learning in early childhood settings suggest further that sociocultural mechanisms (or constraints) of learning are important factors in children's knowledge construction in the early years. These studies also indicate the interface of content and processes in young children's knowledge construction. It is argued that the professional knowledge …

Orwell Versus Huxley: Economics, Technology, Privacy, And Satire, Richard A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and Huxley's novel Brave New World have often been thought prophetic commentaries on economic, political, and social matters. I argue, with particular reference to the supposed applicability of these novels to issues of technology and privacy, that the novels are best understood as literary works of art, rather than as social science or commentary, and that when so viewed Orwell's novel in particular reflects a dissatisfaction with everyday life and a nostalgia for Romantic values.
