Statutes With Four Legs To Stand On? An Examination Of "Cruelty To Police Dog" Laws, Craig Ian Scheiner Jan 1999

Statutes With Four Legs To Stand On? An Examination Of "Cruelty To Police Dog" Laws, Craig Ian Scheiner

Animal Law Review

Since 1978, forty states and one United States territory have passed laws to protect police dogs. Despite the numerous peculiarities contained in these laws, as well as the legal issues raised by them, none of the laws have been reviewed in academic literature. Although the courts have had little occasion to analyze the vast breadth of issues surrounding the police dog laws, there is much to be said about the components of the various statutes. This article examines the statutory requirements and prescribed penalties relating to police dog statutes and opens debate on the prudence and value of such laws. …

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel Jan 1999

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method has gained tremendous popularity in the past decade as a tool for solving Maxwell's equations. Phased Array Antennas find several applications including mobile communications ( cellular, personal communication systems and networks), satellite communications, global positioning system (GPS), aeronautical and radar systems. This dissertation describes the application of the FDTD method for calculating broadband characteristics of finite-sized phased array antennas consisting of microstrip elements fed with coaxial probes.

The characterization of such antennas is dependent upon the development of simulation tools that can accurately model general topologies including wires, dielectrics, conductors lumped elements and metallic strips. …

Regulation Of Rubisco In Purple Nonsulfur Bacteria, Amy Cohn Jan 1999

Regulation Of Rubisco In Purple Nonsulfur Bacteria, Amy Cohn

Honors Capstones

Rubisco is an enzyme that catalyzes the first reaction in the Calvin Cycle in photosynthesis. Since it is a poor catalyst, research has attempted to improve the rate at which it fixes carbon because this could in turn increase crop yields, in plants, Rubisco is regulated by light but the evolution of regulatory proteins and mechanisms is unknown. By studying Rubisco activity in photosynthetic bacteria, the origins of its regulation can be explored, we grew purple nonsulfur bacteria on two main substrates and used a culture grown in constant light conditions as a control. The experimental culture was grown in …

A First Grade Reading Curriculum, Melissa R. Lee Jan 1999

A First Grade Reading Curriculum, Melissa R. Lee

Honors Capstones

A balanced approach between whole language and phonics instruction is the best way to teach beginning readers. This is a first grade reading curriculum that incorporates these two components. I chose the Four Blocks Literacy Model to form the backbone of my curriculum. The four components of this model include a guided reading block, a working with words block, a self-selected reading block, and a writing block. Each of these blocks was used daily throughout the curriculum. For each month, I decided what skills to focus on. Then I collected and developed lessons to meet the objectives. Finally, I wrote …

Study Of The Molecular Basis Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Heather Christine Glasscock-Hatcher Jan 1999

Study Of The Molecular Basis Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Heather Christine Glasscock-Hatcher

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Abnormalities of the retinal vasculature contribute significantly to the development of diabetic retinopathy. In this study we have focused on two mechanisms which may be responsible-for the development and progression of this diabetic complication. Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with many of the vascular complications of diabetes mellitus; therefore, we examined mechanisms by which high-dose glucose damages retinal capillary endothelial cells. Our cell count results showed that high-dose glucose induces cell death in primary cultured human retinal capillary endothelial cells. Flow cytometry, in situ cell death detection, and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the cell death occurred via the apoptosis pathway …

Physiological Response Of Scup, Stenotomus Chrysops, To A Simulated Trawl Capture And Escape Event, Joseph T. Dealteris, Kenneth J. La Valley

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Scup (Stenotomus chrysops) were severely exercised by manual chasing for 6 min, and the clearance of lactate over a 12 hr period was evaluated. Lactate peaked from 0.5 to 1.0 hr following exercise with concentrations ranging from 61.0 to 126.0 mg/dL and returned to rested concentrations within 4 hr post-exercise. Concentrations of lactate in rested fish ranged from 5.2 to approximately 23.0 mg/dL. Fish were observed for 10 days following exercise for delayed mortality. A 100% survival of scup was observed with no significant difference between control and experimental populations. Swimming performance was evaluated for 14.0 to 15.0 cm fork …

Beyond The Model Rules: The Place Of Examples In Legal Ethics, Heidi Li Feldman Jan 1999

Beyond The Model Rules: The Place Of Examples In Legal Ethics, Heidi Li Feldman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Model Rules of Professional Conduct defined the agenda for the post- Watergate renaissance in legal ethics. While there had been some form of codified precepts for American lawyers since at least 1908, Watergate inspired a desire to clean up a disgraced profession. The American Bar Association (ABA) promulgated the Model Rules; law schools instituted mandatory courses; and scholars debated and analyzed the new Model Rules. The organized bar devoted much time and attention to developing these guidelines. The mainstream media covered both the bar's original efforts and the subsequent adoption of the Model Rules by particular jurisdictions. Today, forty-three …

Infectious Necrotizing Enteritis And Mortality Caused By Vibrio Carachariae In Summer Flounder Paralichthys Dentatus During Intensive Culture, Bruno Soffientino, Todd Gwaltney, David R. Nelson, Jennifer L. Specker, Michael Mauel, Marta Gomez-Chiarri

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

An epizootic causing mortality among cultured summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus occurred in summer of 1998 at a land-based facility on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. The disease, flounder infectious necrotizing enteritis (FINE), was characterized by reddening around the anal area, distended abdomens filled with opaque serosanguineous fluid, enteritis and necrosis of the posterior intestine. In extreme cases of the disease, the posterior intestine was detached from the anus and was observed coming out the vent. The intestine of individuals that recovered from the dsease ended in a blind-sac; the abdomens of these fish were distended, due to food and water …

Cannibal Democracies, Theocratic Secularism: The Turkish Version, Edip Yuksel Jan 1999

Cannibal Democracies, Theocratic Secularism: The Turkish Version, Edip Yuksel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

Symposium: Cannibal Democracies: Human Rights and Democracy in Turkey

The article critically examines Turkey's democratic framework, arguing that its version of democracy diverges significantly from Western models due to its unique interpretation of secularism and the disproportionate influence of the military and political elite. The analysis highlights how the Turkish Constitutional Court's frequent banning of political parties, particularly the Welfare Party in 1998, undermines democratic processes and often leads to authoritarian governance. The article contends that Turkey's Constitution, drafted under military supervision, lacks political legitimacy and contains provisions that restrict individual and group rights, perpetuating a system of oligarchy and …

International Law And The Maritime Carriage Of Radioactive Materials: Prospects For The Non-Anthropocentric Greening Of International Law, A. Suzette V. Suarez Jan 1999

International Law And The Maritime Carriage Of Radioactive Materials: Prospects For The Non-Anthropocentric Greening Of International Law, A. Suzette V. Suarez

LLM Theses

A review of the legal regime governing the shipments of radioactive materials reveals an array of preventive and emergency measures as well as liability and compensation measures. The legal regime, however, does not provide any voice to all potentially affected entities, particularly developing Coastal States and the marine environment. The legal regime must be transformed in order to take the above interests into consideration. Any reform in the legal system must start with an evaluation of the ethics and philosophy underlying the system. Understanding the ethical and philosophical basis of the legal regime contributes to the formulation of recommendations for …

Reproductive Decisionmaking In The Context Of Hiv/Aids In Ndola, Zambia, Naomi Rutenberg, Ann E. Biddlecom, Frederick A.D. Kaona Jan 1999

Reproductive Decisionmaking In The Context Of Hiv/Aids In Ndola, Zambia, Naomi Rutenberg, Ann E. Biddlecom, Frederick A.D. Kaona

Reproductive Health

Family planning (FP) programs are increasingly being considered as a logical focal point for STD and HIV/AIDS prevention services because they serve large numbers of women at risk, address the sensitive issue of sexual behavior and fertility control, and the methods for preventing unwanted pregnancy and disease can be the same. FP programs, by providing contraceptive methods, are currently one of the few sources of assistance in the sub-Saharan African region for preventing perinatal transmission of HIV, while the promotion of barrier methods contributes to the prevention of heterosexual transmission. Given this potential, research is needed to understand how the …

Developing And Integrating A Lessons Learned Methodology For Humanitarian Mine Action, Cisr

Global CWD Repository

The demand for a centralized lessons learned database has made it clear that there is value in consolidating the experience derived from the numerous de-mining missions by a variety of teams in a variety of countries. Consequently, the James Madison University Mine Action Information Center developed a methodology for collecting, validating, and distributing lessons-learned within the mine action community.

In order to develop this lessons-learned system, individuals involved in the wide spectrum of activities (victim assistance, mine clearance, survey, mine awareness, etc.) and belonging to the myriad agencies (NGOs, military demining, United Nations, MACs, etc.) related to the field of …

Consequences Of Using Fear As A Motivator And Its Effects On The Employer / Employee Relationship, Nicole M. Griggs Jan 1999

Consequences Of Using Fear As A Motivator And Its Effects On The Employer / Employee Relationship, Nicole M. Griggs

Theses

The following work is an in-depth analysis of the consequences of using fear as a motivator, specifically, in the workplace, and the effects fear has on employees. The empirical research identifies the successful, and often, unsuccessful components of the employer/employee relationship. For many, using fear would seem to be a powerful way of getting employees to produce more, work harder, increasing motivation. This is not always the answer. The study provides reasons why fear can be a negative motivator and detrimental to an organization.
