Effect Of The Environmental Temperature On The Degradation Period Of Carbaryl, Ahmet Uyanik, Mustafa Özdemi̇r Jan 1999

Effect Of The Environmental Temperature On The Degradation Period Of Carbaryl, Ahmet Uyanik, Mustafa Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the effect of the temperature on the degradation period of Carbaryl (Sevin), a widely used outdoor and indoor insecticide, was investigated in a laboratory in soil and on green plants by using a new quantitative TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) method. The experimental temperature conditions were 40°C , 16°C and 5°C for soil and 15°C for green plants. The results which were evaluated by photocopying of the TLC spots on a graph paper and square counting showed that carbaryl degradation is a first order reaction and the temperature dependent half-life of the degradation takes grater than four weeks …

Variation In Biomass And Chemical Composition Of Dominant Rangeland Plants During The Growing Season I. Changes In Biomass, Root/Shoot Ratio, Stem, Leaf, Flower Ratios, Adi̇l Bakoğlu, Ahmet Gökkuş, Ali̇ Koç

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was conducted to determine annual variations in the below- and above-ground biomass, root/stem, stem, leaf and flower ratios of crested wheatgrass, subalpine brome, sheep fescue, junegrass, needlegrass, hybrid alfalfa and cat thyme. The specimens were collected during the growing season of 1994 from protected rangelands in Erzurum area. Plant height increased slowly at the onset of growth, accelerated in the middle of a growth stage and levelled off after the blossom stage. The accumulation of below- and above-ground biomass was similar to the trend of growth in plant height. Root/stem rations were highest at the beginning of the …

Note, A Birthright Rearticulated: The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Nirej S. Sekhon Jan 1999

Note, A Birthright Rearticulated: The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Nirej S. Sekhon

Faculty Publications By Year

This Note addresses Proposition 227, California's recently enacted voter initiative banning bilingual education in public schools. Nirej Sekhon argues that the proposition functions rhetorically as a racially inflected exhortation to nonwhite peoples in the United States. The proposition equates American identity with white identity by claiming English as the birthright privilege of white Americans. As such, the proposition is continuous with the history of language and education politics in the United States. The author concludes by sketching the broad challenge that his analysis poses to current legal mechanisms.

Observed Conflict, Sexual Experience, Pornography, And Coercive Behavior As Predictors Of Men’S Sexual Arousal To Sexual And Violent Images, James Allen Miller

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated predictors of sexual arousal to erotic, rape, and non-sexual violent videotaped stimuli in a sample of 82 undergraduate men. Questionnaire self-report measures of observed parental conflict, conflict tactics practiced in interpersonal relations, coercive sexual behavior, variety of sexual experiences, and frequency of using various forms of pornography, as well as a number of relevant demographic measures like fraternity affiliation, athletic participation, frequency of intercourse, and number of sexual partners, were assessed. These measures were used in analyses that tested relationships among these variables and determined group differences based on dichotomized classification of high and low scores.

Humanist Ethics And Political Justice: Soto, Sepúlveda, And The "Affair Of The Indies", G. Scott Davis Jan 1999

Humanist Ethics And Political Justice: Soto, Sepúlveda, And The "Affair Of The Indies", G. Scott Davis

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In the debate over Spanish treatment of the natives of the New World, both sides regularly invoked Aristotle on natural slaves. This paper argues that the interpretation of the Spanish Dominican Domingo de Soto displays a greater understanding of Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition of justice than that of Juan Gines de Sepúlveda, the Spanish Humanist. The paper goes on to argue that it is the humanist tradition itself that disposes Sepúlveda to misconstrue Aristotle and the tradition of political justice.

The Role Of Artists In Ship Camouflage During World War I, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1999

The Role Of Artists In Ship Camouflage During World War I, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

Experiments in ship camouflage during World War I were necessitated by the inordinate success of German submarines (called "U-boats") in destroying Allied ships. Because it is impossible to make a ship invisible at sea, Norman Wilkinson, Everett L. Warner and other artists devised methods of course distortion in which high-contrast, unrelated shapes were painted on a ship's surface, thereby confusing the periscope view of the submarine gunner.

Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Adult students who experience difficulties in comprehending written (printed) language frequently are limited in their scholastic development and possible employment opportunities. These individuals, who represent a growing segment of the learning disabled population, include poor readers and dyslexics and they routinely seek help and remediation through various educational techniques. One remediation technique often used is "books on tape". Through books on tape, recorded spoken text is presented in a sequential manner to the remedial reader as he or she is reading the corresponding printed document. This dissertation reviewed the books on tape paradigm, and through the use of current computer …

The Development Of An Appraisal Instrument And Subsequent Evaluation Of Middle School Science Curricula, Julie Wasmund Jan 1999

The Development Of An Appraisal Instrument And Subsequent Evaluation Of Middle School Science Curricula, Julie Wasmund

Honors Capstones

Within the last few years, standards of education have become an influence on the construction and assessment of school curricula In order to evaluate middle school science programs. a rubric was developed based on the National Science Education Standards and the Illinois Learning Standards for Science. Middle school science curricula were acquired from three different districts: Community Unit District U-46, Naperville School District 203. and DeKalb Community Unit District #428. Each curriculum was perused and evaluated using the rubric. Because a rubric is subjective in its nature, additional comments were made in regards to each district's curriculum. There was variance …

The Impact Of Foreign Trade On The Employment Of Unskilled U.S. Workers: Some New Evidence, Frederic L. Pryor Jan 1999

The Impact Of Foreign Trade On The Employment Of Unskilled U.S. Workers: Some New Evidence, Frederic L. Pryor

Economics Faculty Works

This paper explores four empirical relationships reflecting the impact of foreign trade on the employment of unskilled workers: (i) the direct relationship between net exports and embodied education of the corresponding goods; (ii) the changes in domestic prices accompanying changes in net exports; (iii) the relationship between real or potential import competition and defensive measures such as more investment or increasing the skill level of the labor force; and (iv) the relationship between foreign trade and domestic prices. None of these exercises suggests that foreign trade has much impact on the employment of less skilled U.S. workers.

Ecology And Fishery Biology Of Holothuria Fuscogilva In The Maldives, Indian Ocean (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea), Norman Reichenbach

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The ecology of Holothuriafuscogilva was assessed in three habitats in the Republic of Maldives: marine grass beds, island gaps and lagoon floor. In the lagoon floor habitat, H fuscogilva was the dominant sea cucumber with relative abundances ranging from 70 to 94.9% in the two atolls studied. In one island gap area the median density (biomass), movement and growth rate were 29 ha-I (21 kg ha-I), 2 m d-I and 0.29% d-1 , respectively. Based upon the weight distributions in the three habitats, H fuscogilva appears to recruit to shallow marine grass beds, then migrates to deeper waters such as …
