Graduate Record 1999: Priceless, Southwestern Oklahoma State University

SWOSU Yearbooks

The Mastercard "priceless" advertising campaign hits on a specific point — there are some items you can put a price on, and there are some you cannot. The point rings true at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. You can put a price on books, room and board, dinner, clothes. You can count the number of hours you spent studying, talking, partying, or sleeping. But if you combined all your time and money spent in Weatherford, Oklahoma, you could never put a price on it. Your four years in Southwestern are wrapped up in a combination of experiences, fun, sorrow, stress, happiness …

A Preliminary Study Of Healing Of Superpulsed Carbon Dioxide Laser Incisions In The Hard Palate Of Monkeys, G. Romanos, C.H. Siar, K. Ng, C.G. Toh

Pre-2000

Background and Objective: Prior studies of laser wound healing using different animal models have shown a delay ed tissue response after carbon dioxide (CO,) laser application. This article reports on the preliminary findings of healing of superpulsed CO2 laser and scalpel incisions in the hard palate of monkeys. Study design/Materials and Methods: Twelve parallel incisions using a superpulsed, continuous wave CO, laser and a scalpel were performed in the hard palate of each of two adult monkeys at 3, 7, and 14 days time schedules. Power levels of 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 Watts were used for the laser incisions. Wounds …

Scar Formation After Skin Injury To The Human Foetus In Utero Or The Premature Neonate, W.A. Morrison, J.V. Hurley, T.S. Ahmad, H.R. Webster Jan 1999

Scar Formation After Skin Injury To The Human Foetus In Utero Or The Premature Neonate, W.A. Morrison, J.V. Hurley, T.S. Ahmad, H.R. Webster

Pre-2000

A macroscopically visible scar was present at birth in three infants with a history of injury during amniocentesis at 16–20 weeks’ gestation. In several neonates born between 21 and 31 weeks’ gestation, chemical injury to the skin caused by extravasation of calcium gluconate healed by formation of a large scar. In the infant born at 21 weeks, biopsy of the injured area showed infiltration by large numbers of neutrophils and macrophages. It appears that a very immature neonate can mount a prominent inflammatory reaction and that both a midtrimester foetus and a very immature neonate heal injuries to the skin …

The Outer Limits Of Human Genetic Engineering: A Constitutional Examination Of Parents' Procreative Liberty To Genetically Enchance Their Offspring, Thomas Stuart Patterson

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The biotechnological field of genetic engineering is advancing so rapidly that some scientists predict that within the next decade, technology will be available that will enable people to genetically engineer their offspring. This ability could be used for purposes as diverse as curing a genetic disease or selecting certain "favorable" characteristics for one's progeny.

While there seem to be some potential benefits to such technology, there are specific dangers as well. Throughout the short history of genetic engineering, scientists have found that there are sometimes unanticipated negative effects that arise with genetic manipulation. Because of this fact, some scientists are …

Animals & Society Courses: A Growing Trend In Post-Secondary Education, Jonathan Balcombe

Education Collection

A survey of college courses addressing nonhuman animal ethics and welfare issues indicates that the presence of such courses has increased greatly since a prior survey was done in 1983. This paper provides titles and affiliations of 67 of 89 courses from the current Survey. These courses represent 15 academic fields, and a majority are entirely devoted to animal issues. The fields of animal science and philosophy are proportionally well represented compared with biology and wildlife-related fields. An estimated 5000 or more North American students are now receiving instruction in these issues each year. While the availability of courses in …

A Municipal Inventory And Evaluation Of Natural Areas: History And Methodology, William R. Norris, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

An inventory of natural areas in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa was conducted (1990-1994) in response to conflicts arising when significant natural areas were encountered on lands approved for development by the City of Ames (Iowa) Planning Office. Methods for objective evaluation of woodland and prairie quality were developed for use during the inventory. The woodland method is based on four components: I) Diversity of expected species, H) Structure of canopy and understory layers, III) Fidelity of species to the habitat and IV) absence of Introduced Species. Rules are explicitly stated for the scoring of each component for both the …
