Impact Of Snowfall On The Utah Preventive Aerial Hunting Program, Kimberly K . Wagner, Michael R. Conover Jan 1999

Impact Of Snowfall On The Utah Preventive Aerial Hunting Program, Kimberly K . Wagner, Michael R. Conover

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Aerial hunting is one of the tools used by wildlife managers to reduce predation by coyotes (Canis latrans) on livestock and wildlife (Guthery and Beasom 1977, Sterner and Schumake 1978, Stout 1982. Smith et al. 1986). In research conducted by Wagner and Conover (1999), areas with preventive aerial hunting had fewer confirmed and estimated lamb losses to coyote predation and required significantly fewer hours of additional corrective predation management than areas without aerial hunting. Aerial hunting is perceived to be especially valuable for large areas and areas with rough terrain and limited access (United States Department of the …

Use Of Netted Cage Traps For Capturing White-Tailed Deer, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Jeff Beringer, Scott E. Hygnstrom Jan 1999

Use Of Netted Cage Traps For Capturing White-Tailed Deer, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Jeff Beringer, Scott E. Hygnstrom

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The safe and humane live capture of deer may be an important component of management and research projects. Growing populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in both urban and agricultural settings often conflict with local human interests and present challenges to natural resource managers. Netted cage traps can be an important tool when managing deer populations where traditional control methods may not be appropriate or acceptable. Netted cage traps can also be used by researchers to acquire deer for marking, measurements, or other non-lethal purposes. We discuss the design of netted cage traps, trapping techniques, and the handling …

Book Review: Places Of Quiet Beauty: Parks, Preserves, And Environmentalism, Cornelia F. Mutel

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Places of Quiet Beauty: Parks, Preserves, and Environmentalism. Rebecca Conard. 1997. University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, Iowa. XV + 382 pages. ISBN 0-87745-558-9.

Well administered, parks become much more than havens for birds and flowers, much more than game-preserves, a refuge for life of every sort; even more than a play-ground for all the people ... [The well administered park] shall show us real democracy.

So began one of Iowa's preeminent natural historians, Thomas Macbride, in an early-20th-century (1922) address on the status of Iowa's parks. And so Rebecca Conard begins her late-20th-century analysis of the development of Iowa's …

The Marriage Mirage: The Personal And Social Indentity Implications Of Same-Gendered Matrimony, Linda S. Eckols Jan 1999

The Marriage Mirage: The Personal And Social Indentity Implications Of Same-Gendered Matrimony, Linda S. Eckols

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article will examine why so much is at stake in the political, social, and legal debate over same-gender marriage. It will not address the constitutional questions of whether there is a fundamental right to marry, although persuasive arguments have been advanced from both sides of the debate." This Article will focus on a more introspective view of the potential effects of legalizing same-gender marriage on the identities of gay men and lesbians in committed relationships and on the interaction between same-gender couples and society. Marriage would provide the integration sought by gay men and lesbians, but at the expense …

The Freedom To Marry For Same-Sex Couples: The Opening Appellate Brief Of Plaintiffs Stan Baker Et Al. In Baker Et Al. V. State Of Vermont, Mary Bonauto, Susan M. Murray, Beth Robinson

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

As the first state to prohibit slavery by constitution, and one of the few states which, from its inception, extended the vote to male citizens who did not own land, the State of Vermont has long been at the forefront of this nation's march toward full equality for all of its citizens. In July 1997, three same-sex couples challenged Vermont to act as a leader yet again, this time in affording full civil rights to the State's gay and lesbian citizens. Stan Baker and Peter Harrigan, Nina Beck and Stacy Jolles, and Holly Puterbaugh and Lois Farnham were denied marriage …

Evolution Of Pycnogonid Life History Traits, Eric Carl Lovely Jan 1999

Evolution Of Pycnogonid Life History Traits, Eric Carl Lovely

Doctoral Dissertations

The Pycnogonida is a class of arthropods with interesting life histories. Pycnogonids prey on hydroids and some invade hydranths while larvae. Males brood the eggs and larvae hatch as protonymphons. Questions relating to the evolution of life history characteristics were addressed. Evolutionary relationships were poorly understood. It was necessary to determine the relationships within the Pycnogonida and compared to other arthropods.

Twenty-four morphological characters were coded for twenty-three pycnogonid genera and one fossil ancestor, Palaeoisopus problematicus. A branch and bound analysis resulted in fifteen most parsimonious trees. The Nymphonidae were found to be basal. The Ammotheidae were paraphyletic and led …

Effects Of Intralaminar Thalamic Nuclei, Prefrontal Cortical, And Hippocampal Lesions On A Seven-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task, Joshua Alan Burk Jan 1999

Effects Of Intralaminar Thalamic Nuclei, Prefrontal Cortical, And Hippocampal Lesions On A Seven-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task, Joshua Alan Burk

Doctoral Dissertations

Slow response speed has been associated with several neuropsychological disorders including Korsakoff's disease. The ability to respond to brief stimuli can be tested to assess whether slow response speed is due to slow stimulus processing. A seven choice serial reaction time task was developed to test the ability to respond to brief stimuli. Distractibility and stimulus discriminability were manipulated to challenge performance and cues were presented to enhance performance. In Experiment 1, six unlesioned rats were tested on this task. As expected, significant deficits were found when (1) stimulus duration was decreased, (2) bright distractor light was briefly presented, (3) …

A Comparison Of The Maximal Torque Production Of The Quadriceps Muscle During Morning And Afternoon Strength Assessment, Shawn Mccoul Jan 1999

A Comparison Of The Maximal Torque Production Of The Quadriceps Muscle During Morning And Afternoon Strength Assessment, Shawn Mccoul

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this study was to compare maximal quadriceps torque production in early morning hours to afternoon hours. Thirty male subjects volunteered to participate in this study and were randomly assigned to an AM or PM testing session. At least one week after the first test, the subjects completed a similar test in the opposite time slot. Each subject was positioned on the Kin-Com (Chattecx Corp., Chattanooga, 'IN) dynamometer and performed six maximal concentric isokinetic repetitions of knee extension at 600/s between the ROM of 10° and 80° of knee flexion. The AM/PM ratios indicated no significant difference between …

Diet And Exercise-Induced Menstrual Dysfunction In The Female Athlete, Roberta Welp Jan 1999

Diet And Exercise-Induced Menstrual Dysfunction In The Female Athlete, Roberta Welp

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

In recent years there has been an overwhelming increase in the number of females participating in athletic activities. As members of the sports medicine team, physical therapists must be able to recognize afflictions unique to the female athlete. A cluster of increasingly common disorders has been titled the "female athlete triad." By definition, it is the inter-relatedness of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Clinically, it may include other factors such as excessive exercise, various degrees and forms of menstrual dysfunction, and additional issues such as fractures, scoliosis, and general musculoskeletal injury.

The purpose of this study is to provide information …
