Breeding And Genetics 5: Survival Analysis/Threshold Models, Applications In Survival Analysis, Stephen D. Kachman Jan 1999

Breeding And Genetics 5: Survival Analysis/Threshold Models, Applications In Survival Analysis, Stephen D. Kachman

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Survival or failure time traits such as herd life and days open are both important economically and pose a number of challenges to an analysis based on linear mixed models. The main features of a survival trait are that it is the time until some event occurs, and some of the observations are censored. Survival models and the associated estimation procedures provide a flexible means of modeling survival traits. In this paper I will discuss the application of survival analysis based on the Weibull distribution. The components that make up a survival model will be presented along with their interpretation. …

Visualizing Ah Q : An Allegory's Resistance To Representation, Harry H. Kuoshu Jan 1999

Visualizing Ah Q : An Allegory's Resistance To Representation, Harry H. Kuoshu

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

Ah Q, Lu Xun's portraiture of Chinese national character figured in a rural rogue, has been an enigma in its representations. Lu Xun's text presents an interesting allegorical irony: while the experience of Ah Q reveals a mentality which makes his otherwise trivial anecdotes interesting, he, as Leo Ou- fan Lee observes, "is a body without an interior self, a face in the crowd, and the crowd’s summary mirror-image”. From the visual sense, we may illustrate this irony by taking Ah Q as both a voyeur and a spectacle - by constantly visualizing spectacles which he may victimize, Ah Q …

Pharmacokinetics Of Trazodone And Its Major Metabolite M-Chlorophenylpiperazine In Plasma And Brain Of Rats, C. Lindsay Devane, David W. Boulton, Lisa F. Miller, Ronald L. Miller Jan 1999

Pharmacokinetics Of Trazodone And Its Major Metabolite M-Chlorophenylpiperazine In Plasma And Brain Of Rats, C. Lindsay Devane, David W. Boulton, Lisa F. Miller, Ronald L. Miller

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Sprague–Dawley rats were used as models for single trazodone administration (males), continuous administration and dose proportionality experiments (males, females, pregnant females). Plasma and brain tissue were analysed for trazodone and its active metabolite, m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP). Fetal exposure to trazodone and m-CPP was assessed and differences in their steady-state plasma concentration were sought between adult males and females. Both trazodone and m-CPP rapidly appeared in plasma and brain tissue following a single intraperitoneal trazodone dose with brain concentrations exceeding those in plasma. Plasma concentrations of m-CPP were lower than those of trazodone but exceeded them in brain tissue. Chronic administration using …

See Dick Run: Developing Literacy In Kindergarten, Rachel Moss

The Corinthian

Literacy has become an issue of great importance in our country. Many children have reached middle and high school without the ability to read fluently. Educators have therefore earnestly sought the best method of teaching literacy. Children in younger grades are now being taught beginning language arts skills. Standardized tests have been developed to measure the extent of these skills. Parents are also inquiring about the most effective means of preparing their children for school.

Lamb Growth Efficiency And Optimum Finished Weight, Jeff Held Jan 1999

Lamb Growth Efficiency And Optimum Finished Weight, Jeff Held

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999

In the sheep enterprise, lamb sales account for more than 90 percent of gross revenue. Most analyses indicate profitable sheep production is dependent on market prices, pounds of lamb weaned or sold per ewe exposed and the unit cost of production. Producers have little control annually over selling price for their lambs, but they do control production efficiency. Ewe productivity and ewe/lamb feed cost containment are important parameters for all types of flock management systems whether a feeder lamb or finished lamb production emphasis. It is important to excel in each area independent of the type of operation . The …

A Comparison Of Fall Vs Spring Lambing Performance Of Hampshire And Columbia Ewes (Progress Report), A. L. Slyter, Chad Miller, Rud Wasson

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1999

Seasonality of lamb production continues to be a major hurdle for the sheep industry. The lack of a continuous supply of fresh lamb impacts both the processing and retail segments of the industry. The seasonal fluctuation in supply and quality results in sporadic buying patterns by consumers and ultimately less shelf space and therefore less product in the meat case. Often lamb cuts are not available in retail outlets or only on a seasonal basis making sustained consumption levels difficult. In many cases seasonal production also results in inefficient use of facilities, labor and management for the producer. This study …

Attitudes And Perceptions About Ecological Resources And Hazards Of People Living Around The Savannah River Site, Joanna Burger, Jessica Sanchez, J. Whitfield Gibbons, Jeanine Ondrof, Robert Ramos, Michael J. Mcmahon, Karen F. Gaines, Christine Lord, Marie Fullmer, Michael Gochfeld

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Although considerable attention is devoted to environmental monitoring and assessment with respect to both pollutants and the status of particular plant or animal populations, less attention is devoted to assessing people's attitudes about the relative importance of ecological resources. In this paper we examine the attitudes and perceptions about ecological resources of people living around the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), in South Carolina. Our overall hypothesis is that people who are directly affected by the possible outcomes and consequences of a particular hazard (i.e., those people employed at SRS) will undervalue the risks and overvalue the potential …

Urbanization And Related Socio-Economic Problems In Ibadan Area, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Occasional Papers

This paper traces the evolution of urbanization in Ibadan area to political, institutional, economic and social factors. It broadly classifies the socio-economic problems of urbanization in Ibadan area into environmental crisis, crime/violence and urban poverty. Relying on secondary data and published materials, it identifies the major environmental problems as solid waste, flooding and water pollution, with the sanitation and eating habits of the people playing a great role in all of them. Dispossession-related crimes, particularly stealing and theft, are considered the most prominent of all the recorded crimes while violent crimes (mostly assaults) are found to be relatively few. The Effects Of Toxic Aluminium And Low Ph On Gill Development Of Rainbow Trout ( Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Walbaum) Larvae., Meti̇n Çalta

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the gill development of rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) larvae exposed to toxic aluminium (200 ?g/L), those exposed low pH (4.5) alone and those exposed to both for 30 days were investigated under scanning electron microscopy. General appearance of gills, filament and lamella lengths and the number of lamellae per filament were determined in order to evaluate the effects of these toxicants on gill development. In addition, the death rates and general conditions of larvae were observed. In larvae exposed to low pH alone and in those exposed to aluminium alone, a slight thickness in the …

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki Jan 1999

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Mathematics, as an academic discipline, has stood for many years as the last bastion against a growing tide of intellectual relativism that has become all but ubiquitous. More recently, however, efforts have been made to "humanize" mathematics by advocating a social-constructivist approach to the philosophy of mathematics, both in practice and education. This paper is intended to serve as a critical response to one advocate of this approach, Reuben Hersh (What Is Mathematics, Really?, 1997), and in the process a defense of Platonism.
