Is Tonga's Mirab Economy Sustainable? A View From The Village And A View Without It, Mike Evans
Is Tonga's Mirab Economy Sustainable? A View From The Village And A View Without It, Mike Evans
Pacific Studies
The development implications of the now-classic MIRAB economic pattern for South Pacific microstates (with economies dominated by overseas remittances and foreign aid) have attracted considerable attention. Some scholars argue the MIRAB pattern is well entrenched and can be sustained with a minimum of undesirable social and economic outcomes. Others decry the acceptance of the dependency of South Pacific nations and argue for renewed effort toward the development of self-sustaining economies. I argue that the debate must directly address the underlying social relations that facilitate and shape migration and remittances. In Tonga, the movement of people from rural areas has wide-ranging …

Defining Virtual Interactions: A Taxonomy For Researchers And Practitioners, Glade G. Oxborrow
Defining Virtual Interactions: A Taxonomy For Researchers And Practitioners, Glade G. Oxborrow
Theses and Dissertations
Many uses for virtual technology are being identified by diverse organizational entities around the world. Before these technologies can be fully utilized, it is important to have a common definition and understanding of what is meant by the term virtual. It is also important to understand the structural configurations possible using virtual technology and the types of virtual interactions that may occur using these technologies. This thesis will define the basic premises, structures, and definitions applicable to vial interactions. It also defines various types of virtual interactions that may occur using virtual technology. These designations will help both practitioners and …
Site-Based Management And Student Achievement, Roxana Marie Hopkins
Site-Based Management And Student Achievement, Roxana Marie Hopkins
Dissertations
The question that this study seeks to answer is. Does site-based management increase student achievement? Researchers believe that when a school can function more like a closed system, involved in site-based decision making, the culture of the organization may be more conducive to higher student achievement. This study has attempted to determine if there is a basis for this belief.
Supporting the study are three organization theories. Bureaucracy Theory, Systems Theory, and Human Resource Development Theory. These three theories run like threads in a tapestry throughout the research and legislation upon which this research is developed.
Researchers, up to this …

A Comparative Gene Map Of The Horse (Equus Caballus), Alexandre R. Caetano, Yow-Ling Shiue, Leslie A. Lyons, Stephen J. O'Brien, Thomas F. Laughlin, Ann T. Bowling, James D. Murray
Biology Faculty Articles
A comparative gene map of the horse genome composed of 127 loci was assembled based on the new assignment of 68 equine type I loci and on data published previously. PCR primers based on consensus gene sequences conserved across mammalian species were used to amplify markers for assigning 68 equine type I loci to 27 horse synteny groups established previously with a horse-mouse somatic cell hybrid panel (SCHP, UC Davis). This increased the number of coding genes mapped to the horse genome by over 2-fold and allowed refinements of the comparative mapping data available for this species. In conjunction with …
The Role Of Brn-3.2 In Retinal Ganglion Cell Differentiation, Jerin Marie Wright
The Role Of Brn-3.2 In Retinal Ganglion Cell Differentiation, Jerin Marie Wright
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Within the retina, the POU domain of transcription factors brn-3.0, brn-3.1, and brn-3.2 are present only in retinal ganglion cells. These genes are believed to be involved in establishing neural cell lineages in mammals. In this study brn-3.2 was examined by comparing the number of ganglion cells present during postnatal development in normal mice (+/+), in mice homozygous (-/-) for the brn-3.2 gene, and in adult mice with a heterozygous gene deletion (+/-) for brn-3.2. Optic nerve cross sections were imaged by electron microscopy, and axon profiles counted systematically by hand. These counts were then related to the nerve cross …

A Preclinical Model Of Ionizing Radiation And Tnf-Alpha Gene Therapy For Cancer, Jun Li
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Long term control of high-grade brain tumors is rarely achieved with current therapeutic regimens. This study sought to determine if pretreatment with plasmid DNA expressing Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) could enhance the effect of ionizing radiation in an aggressive, rapidly growing glioma tumor (C6) model. Plasmid DNA is an attractive vector system for delivery of foreign genes into eukaryotic cells due to its advantages including low immunogenicity in vivo, lesser toxicity and relatively low cost. We have constructed a plasmid-based mammalian expression vector (pGL1-TNF) to secrete human TNF-α from cancer cells. Plasmid DNA was successfully transfected into C6 cells …
Family And Child Psychosocial Functioning Of Infant Heart Transplant Recipients, Kimberly R. Freeman
Family And Child Psychosocial Functioning Of Infant Heart Transplant Recipients, Kimberly R. Freeman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
With the advancement of medical procedures, heart transplantation has become a viable alternative for infants born with congenital or acquired heart disease. Although these children are thought to experience much improvement in their overall physical functioning post-transplantation, the long-term psychological functioning of these children and their families is currently unknown. This study examines the long-term family functioning and psychosocial development of infant heart transplant recipients in comparison to children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and non-clinical control children. Results indicate that infant heart transplant recipients and their families experience fewer overall problems as compared to the CHD group, and more …
Effect Of Pollution On Genetic Diversity In The Southern California Bight, Xiao Li Ma
Effect Of Pollution On Genetic Diversity In The Southern California Bight, Xiao Li Ma
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Two intertidal invertebrate species, M galloprovincialis and Balanus glandula, were collected from seven different bay sites along the Southern California coast to test if environmental contamination is associated with the decrease of genetic diversity at the population level. Collections were made at three relatively pristine "clean" sites and four "impacted" sites which were exposed to heavy industrial or boating activity and which had previously, been identified as having measurable levels of pollution. The "Comet" assay (Single Cell Gel electrophoresis) was performed to measure single-strand DNA breaks in mussels at several of the sites in order to confirm differing impacts …

Phylogeography Of The Night Lizard, Xantusia Henshawi, From Southern California, Robert Edward Lovich
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The granite night lizard, Xantusia henshawi, is a highly specialized crevice dwelling lizard found in the Peninsular Ranges of southern California, United States and northern Baja California, Mexico. Generally, little morphological variation is seen in this species over a variety of habitats throughout its range, from elevations near sea level to approximately 2000 meters, and from Mediterranean habitats near the Pacific coast to arid desert habitat in the Colorado Desert of California. One exception is the variation seen in the subspecies X h. gracilis, which differs from X h. henshawi in morphology, allozymes, ecology, and natural history.

The Effect Of Divalent Cations On The Prophenoloxidase Enzyme Cascade Activity In The Freshwater Crayfish Cambarus Latimanus, Hans Skailand Eikaas
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of divalent cations such as cadmium, calcium, copper, lead and magnesium upon the prophenoloxidase system (proPO) was studied in hemocytes of the crayfish Cambarus latimanus. It was demonstrated that cadmium, calcium, copper and lead increased proPO activity significantly, whereas magnesium had no statistically significant effect on the system. Also, the molecular weight of the proPO enzyme was estimated using SDS-PAGE and found to be approximately 76 kDa.

Jenifer Troxel v. Tommie Granville
On Writ Of Certiorari To The Supreme Court Of Washington
From the Summary of the Argument
The fundamental rights of parents to direct and control the upbringing of their children and the autonomy of the family have been recognized time and again by this Court. These rights and this autonomy are not creatures of positive law, but are grounded in the natural moral order. The family is the "building block" of civil society and has as its natural end, or telos, the nurturing and development of flourishing human persons and good citizens. …
A Comparative Analysis Of Text And Music And Gender And Audience In Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Andrea Fábry
A Comparative Analysis Of Text And Music And Gender And Audience In Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Andrea Fábry
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Andrea Fábry discusses in her article, "A Comparative Analysis of Text and Music and Gender and Audience in Duke Bluebeard's Castle," the image of Bluebeard as a metaphor for gender relations. Béla Bartók's opera and its libretto represent a prime example of the metaphor that in turn can be found in a range of text types, from fairy tales through novels to films. In the article, Fábry analyzes Bartók's contribution to the metaphor, namely with his opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle. She relates the opera to the text of the opera's libretto, written by film theoretician Béla Balázs, and places her …

Production Of The Subtropical Seagrass, Halodule Wrightii Aschers., In Lower Laguna Madre, Texas, Joseph L. Kowalski
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The autecology of shoal grass, Halodule wrightii Aschers., was studied at 1.2 m depth from June 1995 to February 1997 in Lower Laguna Madre (LLM), Texas. Halodule wrightii in LLM received about 47% surface irradiance, but otherwise displayed lower growth rates and biomass in nutrient-poor rhizosphere and water-column environments compared to H. wrightii populations in other Texas estuaries. High tissue N content and low C:N ratios belied low growth dynamics. Halodule wrightii in LLM is probably nutrient limited. A high nutrient demand by H. wrightii in a nutrient-poor environment may explain, in part, its gradual displacement by Thalassia testudinum and …
The Romantic Poetry Of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Tonya Maristine Scott
The Romantic Poetry Of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Tonya Maristine Scott
Theses (Pre-2016)
The challenge that present scholars have to face is constructing a literary history that includes the aesthetics of Dunbar, which is traceable to and predetermined by the experimental, Romantic tendencies of Longinus, Wordsworth and Coleridge. Therefore, application of the literary trends and techniques of the Romantic era, which emphasizes the Expressive theory, lends itself to the hypothesis of this study: Dunbar's nature lyrics, like those of the British Romantics, reflect experiments with language, tone and subject matter as prefigured by Longinus, Wordsworth and Coleridge. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the literary English works of Paul Laurence Dunbar …

Liberating Lawyers: Divergent Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson
Liberating Lawyers: Divergent Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson
Duke Law Journal
Professor Atkinson hopes William Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust will replace Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird as our favorite story of lawyerly virtue. In both stories, a white male lawyer and his protege try to free a black man falsely accused of a capital crime. But below these superficial similarities, Professor Atkinson finds fundamental differences. To Kill a Mockingbird, with its father-knows-best attorney, Atticus Pinch, celebrates lawyerly paternalism; Intruder in the Dust, through its aristocratic black hero, Lucas Beauchamp, and his lay allies, challenges the rule of lawyers, if not law itself The first urges us to serve others …

Wildlife-Caused Losses For Producers Of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus In 1996, Alice P. Wywialowski
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The National Agricultural Statistics Service surveyed by telephone and mail in January and February 1997 all known producers of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus to acquire current information about wildlife-caused losses in calendar year 1996. Many producers tried to prevent wildlife-caused losses of their catfish by shooting (57%), vehicle patrol (55%), or frightening (36%), at an estimated cost of >$5 million. Yet, 69% of catfish produces cited some wildlife-caused losses. Birds were most frequently cited as a cause of losses, and double-crested cormorants Phalacrocorax auritus was the species cited most frequently (53%). The next most frequently cited bids were herons Ardea …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Cysticercosis in a canine host (Canis jamiliaris) attributable to the taeniid cestode Taenia crassiceps is reported for the first time in North America. Numerous parent and daughter cysticerci occurred in a massive intrapleural and intraperitoneal infection in an apparently immunocompromised host. The largest cysticerci were ovoid to elongate. 5-9 mm in maximum length. and armed with 32-34 rostellar hooks in two rows; small hooks measured 114-143 μm long (avg. = 124 ± 8.2 μm). and large hooks were 156-180 μm (avg. = 163 ± 7.4 μm). Taenia crassiceps is widespread in boreal North America and, like a number …
