These Are The People In Your Neighborhood, Elliot Regenstein
These Are The People In Your Neighborhood, Elliot Regenstein
Michigan Law Review
The 1997 St. Louis Rams media guide contains a glowing description of the team's star rookie from the prior season. The guide highlights his brilliant college career, describes his solid first professional season, and mentions that he grew up in Los Angeles. In a gray box above his football statistics, it notes that he frequently visits the Emergency Children's Home (ECHO) for troubled youth, where he talks to kids and plays basketball with them. The description would all look pretty normal if it wasn't a portrait of Lawrence Phillips. Almost every other sporting publication has written of Phillips not as …

Analysis Of Intraguild Predation With A Consideration Of Adaptive Foraging, Toshinori Okuyama
Analysis Of Intraguild Predation With A Consideration Of Adaptive Foraging, Toshinori Okuyama
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Identification of interactive units in food webs is particularly important in population and community ecology. Intraguild predation has gained much attention recently with the recognition of its prevalence in the field, although its significance has not been fully studied. Nature contains much more complex interactions than a simple food chain. Yet, much theory still focuses on the trophic levels connected in a single linear chain. In this thesis, I study intraguild predation including the consideration of animal behavior whose importance is also often neglected in population and community ecology.
First, the concepts of intraguild predation and animal behavior are introduced. …

Uptake And Transformation Of Trichloroethylene By Hybrid Poplar: Laboratory Studies, Julie K. Chard
Uptake And Transformation Of Trichloroethylene By Hybrid Poplar: Laboratory Studies, Julie K. Chard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Trichloroethylene (TCE) was widely used as an industrial solvent and degreasing agent for most of the twentieth century. It is now a widespread groundwater contaminant. Phytoremediation may be a cost-effective cleanup method for TCE-contaminated soils and groundwater. Studies of environmental TCE fate are complicated by its volatility. The literature reports both significant and insignificant plant uptake of TCE. Conflicting findings may be due to differences in exposure level, conditions, and duration of the studies, or to experimental artifacts from laboratory systems.
This research quantified plant uptake and volatilization of TCE using a unique laboratory system. Hybrid poplar trees were exposed …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
This multiple case study examined American Indian Program Branch Head Start directors' perceptions of the role their particular Head Start program plays preserving cultural integrity in tribal communities. Of specific research interest were the unique aspects of the tribal customs of child rearing and early childhood educational practices within each community. Another area of research focused on exploring each director's vision of how the Head Start experience contributes to the future of the children. Ten tribal Head Start directors from the Great Plains region were interviewed. The grand tour question addressed how participants described their perception of the role of …
Prevalence And Possible Causes Of Vitamin B-6 Deficiency Among Women In The Philippines, Siew Sun Wong
Prevalence And Possible Causes Of Vitamin B-6 Deficiency Among Women In The Philippines, Siew Sun Wong
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Recently maternal intake of multivitamins has been associated with a reduced risk of orofacial clefts (OFC) in human epidemiologic studies. In the Philippines, vitamin B-6 deficiency was found to be associated with increased risk of OFCs. The birth prevalence of OFCs in the Philippines is among the highest known, but Filipino emigrants in the United States have lower rates, indicating that environmental factors may play an important role in causing OFCs in the Philippines.
The prevalence and possible causes of vitamin B-6 deficiency were investigated through dietary and biochemical assessments in case-control study in Negros Occidental, Philippines. Mothers with OFC …

The Erie Doctrine Revisited: How A Conflicts Perspective Can Aid The Analysis, Joseph P. Bauer
The Erie Doctrine Revisited: How A Conflicts Perspective Can Aid The Analysis, Joseph P. Bauer
Journal Articles
I have taught Civil Procedure for the past twenty-five years. Having returned to teaching Conflict of Laws last year, after not having taught that course since the mid-1980s, I was interested in re-examining the Erie doctrine from the vantage point of both of these subject areas. My goal was to see whether a combination of learning from these two related disciplines would introduce additional coherence into the analysis of this topic.
In one sense, the Erie doctrine and traditional choice of law determinations present analogous questions, since they both involve making a selection between competing legal rules. Choice of law …
Regulation Of Glucose -6 -Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Cultured Rat Hepatocytes, Laura Petrosky Stabile
Regulation Of Glucose -6 -Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Cultured Rat Hepatocytes, Laura Petrosky Stabile
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanism(s) by which polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit gene expression of the lipogenic enzymes. The model enzyme which we are using to study this phenomenon is liver glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). In order to determine if regulation of G6PD occurred at a transcriptional or a posttranscriptional step in rat hepatocytes, enzyme activity, mRNA accumulation and transcriptional activity of the G6PD gene were measured in the presence and absence of a polyunsaturated fatty acid, arachidonic acid. Insulin and glucose stimulated a 5- to 7-fold increase in G6PD activity and mRNA. This increase was …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Subjects were exposed to different concentrations of CFC-113 for variable duration while conducting 30-minute exercise regiments. End-exhaled breath samples were collected 25, 30 and 35 minutes after the exercise regiment and quantified using gas chromatography. Three comparative studies were conducted.;A short duration administration delivered at the beginning or at the end of the regiment was compared to a long duration administration delivered at the beginning or at the end of the exercise regiment. The second study compared breath samples when 500 ppm of CFC-113 was administered at the beginning or end six minutes of the regiment. The third compared continuous …
Theory Of Mind Development And Executive Functioning In Elementary School Children, Dana Lee Futoran
Theory Of Mind Development And Executive Functioning In Elementary School Children, Dana Lee Futoran
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The following study explored the role of verbal ability and executive functioning in theory of mind understanding in elementary school children. Scores on measures of language comprehension, verbal ability (sentence memory, and forward digit span), matrix completion, executive functioning (backward digit span), and second-order theory of mind tasks were obtained. Partial correlations of the measures controlling for age revealed verbal ability to be significantly correlated with theory of mind comprehension. A regression analysis demonstrated that auditory language comprehension was the only variable, in addition to age, that explained unique variance in performance on a recursive thinking task. Possible explanations are …

Survey And Home Range Analyses Of Wintering Shorebirds Using The Lanark Reef Shorebird Complex, Franklin Co., Florida, Christine Marie Gunnels
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Radio telemetry was used to document spatial variation in use by wintering shorebirds at a series of sites believed to form the Lanark Reef Shorebird Complex in Franklin County. Fifty and 95% convex polygon home range estimate for Willets (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus) averaged 0.52 km 2 and 14.85 km2, respectively. Fifty and 95% convex polygon home range estimate for the Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) averaged <0.01 km2 and 0.10 km 2, respectively. Fifty and 95% convex polygon for the Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) and Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus ) was 0.32 km2, and 6.72 km2, and 0.36 km2 and 24.41 km2, respectively. Black-bellied Plovers appeared to have the smallest distance between locations followed by Willets, Long-billed Curlews and Marbled Godwits.;Replicate shorebird surveys were conducted on the reef and count data were regressed against four environmental variables (wind speed, tide height, cloud cover, and temperature). Regression results (R2 adj) accounted for 45% and 66% of the variance in total shorebird counts on the Reef for 1996 and 1997, respectively. Shorebird total counts were positively correlated with tide height for 1996 and 1997 (P < 0.01).

Tropisetron Inhibits Neurogenic (Stress-Induced) Hypertension But Not Genetic Hypertension, Deanna L. Sockwell
Tropisetron Inhibits Neurogenic (Stress-Induced) Hypertension But Not Genetic Hypertension, Deanna L. Sockwell
Theses (Pre-2016)
Synaptic plasticity in the form of long-term potentiation (LTP) exists in sympathetic ganglia. This project examines the possibility that in sympathetic ganglia which regulate and control blood pressure, LTP may be involved in the expression of some forms of hypertension. Long lasting enhancement of the basal tone of ganglionic transmission ( as with LTP) results in sustained constriction of blood vessels which leads to elevated blood pressure. Results from this laboratory presented compelling evidence that LTP in the superior cervical ganglion is dependent on activation of serotonin 5-HT3 receptors. Long lasting (hours) LTP in sympathetic ganglia is induced by subjecting …
The Role Of Cyclic Nucleotides In The Expression Of Ganglionic Long-Term Potentiation (Ltp ), Crystal A. St. Julien
The Role Of Cyclic Nucleotides In The Expression Of Ganglionic Long-Term Potentiation (Ltp ), Crystal A. St. Julien
Theses (Pre-2016)
Long-term potentiation is an activity dependent phenomenon that results from the repeated activation of presynaptic elements. Evidence suggests it is a memory-related phenomenon. Long-term potentiation has been mostly studied in hippocampus area of brain. Several investigators have also been demonstrated LTP in rats superior cervical ganglia. The cellular mechanisms involve in the development of LTP in SCG of rat is need of further investigation. From the results of preliminary data, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide appear to be responsible for changes in cellular mechanisms involving various pathways (e.g. cAMP, cGMP,protein kinases.etc). This project was designed to investigate some of these …
Being And Becoming In Eden: A Phenomenological Approach To Toni Morrison’S Paradise, Michon Anita Benson
Being And Becoming In Eden: A Phenomenological Approach To Toni Morrison’S Paradise, Michon Anita Benson
Theses (Pre-2016)
Resisting the negative stereotypes society has forced upon the minds and spirits of African-American women, post-modem novelist, Toni Morrison, has assumed the responsibility of demystifying those characteristics which have shaped her so-called "black experience" in this country. Morrison's primary preoccupation, however, unlike many of those authors who precede her, lies in the ways in which philosophy facilitates her purpose. Creating and recreating the contextual and conceptual frameworks within which her theses exist and countering those images with the antithetical perspectives of subsequent texts and characters has enabled the author to formulate viable, often metaphysical, syntheses to the political, spiritual, communal, …

Poetic Sensibility In Leopold Sedar Senghor’S Chants D’Ombre And Nocturnes: A Dichotomous View Of Negritude And Romanticism, Fatima Kane Kandji
Theses (Pre-2016)
Leopold Sedar Senghor is undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed African writers using the French language as means of expression. As such, he is obviously influenced by the masters of the French tradition. However, there are underlying Romantic tendencies in his lyric poetry. In fact, two of his collections that reflect his early and middle poetic developments, respectively, hants d'Ombre and Nocturnes, adhere to the Romantic tradition set by the masters of the English Romantic Verse. Therefore, this present study purports to establish that the concept of Negritude co-exists with Romanticism in the introspective and nostalgic verse of Leopold Sedar …

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
A typical large scale simulation modeling project spans many months and encompasses activities such as problem definition, data collection, model development, experimentation, and scenario analysis. During the life cycle of a simulation project, numerous presentations are made to many different types of audiences. The purpose of these presentations will vary from seeking project approval, requesting information, discussing simulation model features, verifying the model, validating the model, presenting the experimental results, and offering model conclusions. This paper will discuss presentation techniques we used during a year-long simulation-modeling project. We will highlight techniques used for defining the purpose of each presentation, identifying …
Ecologically Sound Biological Control For Invasive Species?: Review Of Pedro Barbosa, Ed., Conservation Biological Control, Svata M. Louda
Ecologically Sound Biological Control For Invasive Species?: Review Of Pedro Barbosa, Ed., Conservation Biological Control, Svata M. Louda
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The timeliness of Conservation biological control, edited by Pedro Barbosa, is striking. Invasive exotic species often represent an economic cost for agriculture and sometimes an environmental threat to the integrity of native vegetation in national forests, parks, and reserves. Problems caused by the most obvious noxious species are bringing more public awareness of invasives. As a consequence, on 3 February 1999, President Clinton issued an executive order to coordinate and stimulate research and management of invasive exotic species. ... The suggested alternative approach to biological-based management of invasive species is exciting in its ecological justification and its sustainability. Environmental …
Genetic Consequences Of Mammalian Social Structure, Jay F. Storz
Genetic Consequences Of Mammalian Social Structure, Jay F. Storz
Jay F. Storz Publications
Populations of social mammals are characterized by several demographic features that may increase the magnitude of genetic drift relative to other evolutionary forces. In particular, polygynous mating and socially mediated constraints on gene flow have been proposed to foster random genetic differentiation among social groups, thereby accelerating rates of evolutionary change. To evaluate this hypothesized link between sociality and genetic sub- division, I examined results of published studies of mammalian populations in which genetic structuring was assessed at the level of social groups. Population genetic data from a taxonomically diverse array of social mammals revealed low to moderately high levels …
Adaptive Strategies That Reduce Predation On Caribbean Spiny Lobster Postlarvae During Onshore Transport, Charles A. Acosta, Mark J. Butler Iv
Adaptive Strategies That Reduce Predation On Caribbean Spiny Lobster Postlarvae During Onshore Transport, Charles A. Acosta, Mark J. Butler Iv
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Like many marine species with meroplanktonic larvae, the Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) has a postlarval stage that moves from the oceanic plankton to inshore nurseries only under specific environmental conditions (i.e., at night, in the surface water layer, on the flood tide, and during new moon), presumably to avoid predation or to enhance onshore transport. Using held and mesocosm experiments, we compared predation on planktonic postlarvae swimming at night near the surface and bottom over coastal habitats along typical offshore-inshore transport paths and determined whether predation rates differed between lunar periods (new moon vs, full moon) and with prey …

Partisan Politics On Talk Radio: A Critical Analysis, Monica L. Olsen
Partisan Politics On Talk Radio: A Critical Analysis, Monica L. Olsen
Student Work
Talk radio has become a very popular medium for political discourse. Using a perspective adapted from Burke’s Cluster Criticism, the rhetoric of a liberal and a conservative talk radio host was examined. Results of this study show that Alan Colmes and Rush Limbaugh present a political reality based on the values of their own ideology. However, it was also discovered that both hosts use similar techniques to communicate their ideology. The “rhetoric of talk radio ideology” is examined.
