Interaction Between Winter Dominance And Territory Defense In Male Pronghorn Antelope, Antilocapra Americana, Charles William Gunnels Iv May 1999

Interaction Between Winter Dominance And Territory Defense In Male Pronghorn Antelope, Antilocapra Americana, Charles William Gunnels Iv

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In a territorial population of pronghorn from Antelope Island, UT, interaction between male dominance and territory defense was examined. High-ranking males were more likely to defend territories. Closely ranked animals engaged in more dominance interactions than distantly ranked individuals, and middle-ranked animals were involved in disproportionately more interactions than either high- or low-ranking animals. Large males possessed large horns and prongs as well as small cheek patches. Results from a factor analysis suggested that large males defended territories with a high density of sage. However, in this study, we did not observe pronghorn feed on sage during the territorial season. …

Commissural Interneurons In Rhythm Generation And Intersegmental Coupling In The Lamprey Spinal Cord, James T. Buchanan May 1999

Commissural Interneurons In Rhythm Generation And Intersegmental Coupling In The Lamprey Spinal Cord, James T. Buchanan

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Commissural interneurons in rhythm generation and intersegmental coupling in the lamprey spinal cord. To test the necessity of spinal commissural interneurons in the generation of the swim rhythm in lamprey, longitudinal midline cuts of the isolated spinal cord preparation were made. Fictive swimming was then induced by bath perfusion with an excitatory amino acid while recording ventral root activity. When the spinal cord preparation was cut completely along the midline into two lateral hemicords, the rhythmic activity of fictive swimming was lost, usually replaced with continuous ventral root spiking. The loss of the fictive swim rhythm was not due to …

John 6 And The Lord's Supper, Jon Bischof May 1999

John 6 And The Lord's Supper, Jon Bischof

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis ventures to reopen an old argument on ground which has been a "no man's land" for Lutherans for nearly 500 years. There is a tradition within Lutheranism of interpreting John 6:51-59 as having no reference whatsoever to the Eucharist. This tradition within Lutheranism can rightly claim the support of Luther who said, "it [the sixth chapter of John] does not refer to the sacrament in a single syllable". Naturally, no confessional Lutheran wants to find himself in disagreement with Luther. We would always rather defend his views when they are maligned. But Luther corrected his own views many …

A Study Of Factors Related To Children's Interest In Television Violence, Stacy Melinda Renfrow

Theses

Since television is so pervasive in our lives , many researchers have come to study the connection of television on children's development. Research to date strongly indicates associations between aggressive behavior and viewing violent material on television . The present study looked, from the parent's perspective , at the relationship of television on their child' s behavior at home. The study examined the amount of television programming children are watching, the kinds of programming children are watching , how they react to what they see , whether forbidding certain violent programming had an effect on children' s interest in a …

A Comparison Between The Level Of Carbon Tetrachloride And Total Trihalomethane Levels In Drinking Water Of Selected Regions Of Greater Houston And The National Primary Drinking Water Standards, Angela Lannetta Curry May 1999

A Comparison Between The Level Of Carbon Tetrachloride And Total Trihalomethane Levels In Drinking Water Of Selected Regions Of Greater Houston And The National Primary Drinking Water Standards, Angela Lannetta Curry

Theses (Pre-2016)

This study was carried out to measure carbon tetrachloride and total trihalomethane (TTHM) levels in Houston's drinking water and compare them to the National Primary Drinking Water Standards for total trihalomethanes. Samples were collected from the faucets of several homes in various geographic locations throughout the city. Total trihalomethanes analyzed were: bromoform, chloroform, dibromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane, in addition to volatile compounds. Compounds were identified using a Gas Chromatography/Electron Capture Detector (GC/ECD), and confirmed by use of a Gas ChromatographyiMass Spectrometer (GC/MS). The data from the GC/ECD showed that total trihalomethane levels were at, or below national standard levels for most of …

A Cultural View Of Music Therapy: Music And Beliefs Of Teton Sioux Shamans, With Reference To The Work Of Frances Densmore, Stephanie B. Thorne

Graduate Thesis Collection

At the end of World War II, doctors trained in the western bio-medical tradition integrated music into their practice as a means of helping soldiers recover, both mentally and physically, from the atrocities experienced while overseas. For many, music was a solace, opening up the peaceful memories of home and family and pushing aside the war-torn landscapes. By establishing interpersonal relationships between the therapist and the patient, as well as patient-to-patient in group settings, music enabled feelings and emotions to flow freely. The mind was given a structured pattern to bridge the gap of the psychological and physiological experience. It …

Social And Environmental Factors Contributing To Stereotypic Behavior In The Spectacled Bear, Dana Marie Varble May 1999

Social And Environmental Factors Contributing To Stereotypic Behavior In The Spectacled Bear, Dana Marie Varble

Honors Theses

Stereotypies have many causes and contributing factors. Often overlooked is the importance of social and environmental factors such as weather, pen design, social interaction, feeds and feeding schedule, and early childhood experiences. These factors are overlooked in favor of more concrete and testable factors such as size of the animal, pen size, age, sex, and health. This research revealed the importance of social and environmental factors in interpreting the causes of stereotypy in one captive spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) at the St. Louis Zoo. Observational data collection was employed to attempt to gather data supporting the influence of these factors. …

Inviting Critical And Creative Thinking Into The Classroom, Kelley A. Freeman May 1999

Inviting Critical And Creative Thinking Into The Classroom, Kelley A. Freeman

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In the field of education, there is much discussion around the subtleties of teaching critical and creative thinking. Surrounding the controversy are questions such as, are certain skills are subordinate to others, and can best practices be fully described. Amidst this continuing discussion, most students are not being taught the necessary, fundamental skills that will allow them to become good thinkers; nor is curriculum being aligned to explicitly and systematically include thinking skills. In the interim however, teachers can become aware of what is involved in critical and creative thinking and the dispositions, skills, strategies and environment that foster good …

The Physician/Patient Interaction: Patient Satisfaction, Communication Apprehension, And Health Locus Of Control, Darian Allicia Galyon May 1999

The Physician/Patient Interaction: Patient Satisfaction, Communication Apprehension, And Health Locus Of Control, Darian Allicia Galyon

Student Work

The purpose of this investigation was to discover the nature of the relationships between a patient’s communication apprehension with physicians and health locus of control and his/her satisfaction with the physician/patient interaction. No significant relationship was found between communication apprehension and a patient’s health locus of control. However, a positive correlation was found between communication apprehension and overall patient satisfaction and patient satisfaction with information. Possible explanations exist for this unexpected result within the uncertainty literature, and by considering that individuals with high communication apprehension may still communicate well despite their anxiety. Statistical analysis also showed that communication apprehension predicts …

Activation Of Caspases And P53 By Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Infection Results In Programmed Cell Death And Efficient Virus Release, Laxminarayana R. Devireddy, Clinton J. Jones May 1999

Activation Of Caspases And P53 By Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Infection Results In Programmed Cell Death And Efficient Virus Release, Laxminarayana R. Devireddy, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Programmed cell death (PCD), or apoptosis, is initiated in response to various stimuli, including virus infection. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) induces PCD in peripheral blood mononuclear cells at the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle (E. Hanon, S. Hoornaert, F. Dequiedt, A. Vanderplasschen, J. Lyaku, L. Willems, and P.-P. Pastoret, Virology 232:351–358, 1997). However, penetration of virus particles is not required for PCD (E. Hanon, G. Meyer, A. Vanderplasschen, C. Dessy-Doize, E. Thiry, and P. P. Pastoret, J. Virol. 72:7638–7641, 1998). The mechanism by which BHV-1 induces PCD in peripheral blood mononuclear cells is not understood, nor …

The Implementation Of Learning Strategies In The Design Of An On-Line Medical Course Supplement, Lee Ann Hill May 1999

The Implementation Of Learning Strategies In The Design Of An On-Line Medical Course Supplement, Lee Ann Hill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Given the charge of integrating technology in the medical school curriculum, faculty members are faced with the challenge of designing new materials for their courses. Often, these materials become on-line resources such as hypermedia and electronic communication. Strategies may assist students who are unfamiliar with on-line materials to use such materials more effectively. This study investigated the elaborative interrogation strategy used in conjunction with on-line materials to promote more efficient processing of difficult material. Twenty second-year medical students volunteered to participate in the study. The course in which they were enrolled required the use of an on-line lecture supplement. The …

Using Impedance Cardiography To Examine Changes In Hemodynamic Parameters During Heart Rate Biofeedback, Jeffrey Louis Goodie May 1999

Using Impedance Cardiography To Examine Changes In Hemodynamic Parameters During Heart Rate Biofeedback, Jeffrey Louis Goodie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Reducing cardiovascular responses to stressors may help to reduce one's risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The present study examined the underlying hemodynamic changes that accompany heart rate (HR) response reduction to a stressor following HR feedback training. Twenty-five healthy college males were assigned to either a HR feedback training group (FB+) or a control group (FB--) and were presented with a videogame and mental arithmetic challenge, as HR, blood pressure, and impedance cardiography-derived measures were recorded. During the training sessions, the FB+ group received HR feedback and the FB-- group was not provided with HR feedback while playing the videogame. …

Subversive Thoughts On Freedom And The Common Good, Larry Alexander, Maimon Schwarzschild May 1999

Subversive Thoughts On Freedom And The Common Good, Larry Alexander, Maimon Schwarzschild

Michigan Law Review

Richard Epstein is a rare and forceful voice against the conventional academic wisdom of our time. Legal scholarship of the past few decades overwhelmingly supports more government regulation and more power for the courts, partly in order to control businesses for environmental and other reasons, but more broadly in hopes of achieving egalitarian outcomes along the famous lines of race, gender, and class. Epstein is deeply skeptical that any of this is the shining path to a better world. Epstein's moral criterion for evaluating social policy is to look at how fully it allows individual human beings to satisfy their …
