The Timing And Pattern Of Myogenesis In Hymenochirus Boettgeri, Matthew T. Smetanick, Rafael O. De Sá, Gary P. Radice Jun 1999

The Timing And Pattern Of Myogenesis In Hymenochirus Boettgeri, Matthew T. Smetanick, Rafael O. De Sá, Gary P. Radice

Biology Faculty Publications

Differences in the relative timing of homologous developmental events among closely related species, known as heterochronies, may provide valuable clues in understanding evolutionary relationships (McKinney, 1988; McNamara, 1995). Examining the timing of myogenic events is a relatively easy and effective method for finding heterochronic events. For example, whether muscle proteins and myofibrils appear before or after multinucleation can be determined through histological techniciques (Kielbowna, 1981). Simple observations of live specimens can pinpoint functional landmarks such as first twitch (spontaneous or due to external stimuli) and first heartbeat.

Swiss Sasha Dolls Visit The United States, Leo Schelbert Jun 1999

Swiss Sasha Dolls Visit The United States, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Dolls - : Their impact on children, their being a mirror image of a given society's values and sense of beauty, - few would dispute their importance. Are they not a kind of secular counterpart of the Holy Child, of the seasonally clothed and beautifully sculpted Madonna or Saint in shrines of pilgrimage, are they not shadows of deeply engraven archetypes in the depth of the human psyche? One of the great doll makers is Sasha Morgenthaler (1893-1975), born von Sinner, who grew up in Bern, worked in Zurich, and counted among her life-long friends and promoters Paul Klee (1879-1940), …

PCI Publications and Projects

Adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) mutations are present in >70% of colon cancers. The APC protein binds to beta-catenin (beta-cat), a protein first identified because of its role in E-cadherin (E-cad) cell adhesion. In some colon cancers lacking APC defects, mutations in presumptive glycogen synthase kinase 3beta phosphorylation sites near the beta-cat NH2 terminus appear to render beta-cat resistant to regulation by APC and glycogen synthase kinase 3beta. In cells with APC or beta-cat defects, beta-cat is stabilized and, in turn, binds to and activates T-cell factor (Tcf)/lymphoid enhancer factor (Lef) transcription factors. To further explore the role of APC, beta-cat, …

Engineering Secreted Proteins For Gene Transfer And Dna Vaccination, Jingxue Liu Jun 1999

Engineering Secreted Proteins For Gene Transfer And Dna Vaccination, Jingxue Liu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In recent years gene therapy has become a promising way of alleviating incurable human ailments, its concept emerging as the ultimate therapy for many infectious and genetic diseases. Two important aspects of the development of successful gene therapy protocols are the ability to monitor gene transfer readily, and the establishment of new protocols for treating specific diseases. In this work, Renilla luciferase and human glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) 65 were engineered for secretion to address some aspects of these issues.

Secreted reporter proteins are promising tools to study gene transfer and expression in a non-destructive manner, and bioluminescent proteins are …

Area Of Expertise Teams: The Michigan Approach To Applied Research And Extension, Arlen Leholm, Larry Hamm, Murari Suvedi, Ian Gray

Journal of Extension

Michigan State University's Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station have restructured their educational delivery system through implementation of area of expertise (AOE) teams. The AOE teams are different from most Extension teams in that they are more permanent in their life span; more self-directed in their operation; more tightly linked with public leaders and groups; more integrative of research demonstration, education design, delivery and evaluation; more dedicated to enhancing their knowledge skills and capacity; and more empowered with resources. This article describes how the adoption of AOE team approach and related system changes have created the seamless interface between Extension …

Food Safety Instructor Training Using Distance Education Jun 1999

Food Safety Instructor Training Using Distance Education

Journal of Extension

An instructor training program was designed to provide state mandated food safety updates for certified Food Protection Management (FPM) instructors using the Trans-Texas Videoconferencing Network (TTVN). The distance education train-the-trainer program featured innovative, interactive, computer-based instructional components including multimedia class materials and activities. A telephone survey of 89 participants indicated that videoconferencing was just as effective as face-to-face instruction and that there was a substantial increase in self-reported knowledge of food safety content after the training program.

Cadmium, Chromium And Lead In Environmental Samples : Speciation And Determination, Hsing-Hui Yu May 1999

Cadmium, Chromium And Lead In Environmental Samples : Speciation And Determination, Hsing-Hui Yu

Dissertations

Heavy metals are important contaminants in many environmental media. This work focuses on the improvement of current methods for water and sediment analysis for three metals, cadmium, chromium and lead. Batch ion exchange was used for water speciation and a microwave assisted sequential extraction scheme was developed for sediment characterization. The developed methods were applied to a group of environmental samples.

The exchangeable species of these metals in water were preconcentrated on ion exchange resins. These include the bioavailable free ions and weakly complexed ions. Metals sorbed on particles and strongly complexed ions, less bioavailable, were eliminated. The method was …

Automatic Document Classification And Extraction System (Adoces), Xuhong Li May 1999

Automatic Document Classification And Extraction System (Adoces), Xuhong Li

Dissertations

Document processing is a critical element of office automation. Document image processing begins from the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) phase with complex processing for document classification and extraction. Document classification is a process that classifies an incoming document into a particular predefined document type. Document extraction is a process that extracts information pertinent to the users from the content of a document and assigns the information as the values of the “logical structure” of the document type. Therefore, after document classification and extraction, a paper document will be represented in its digital form instead of its original image file format, …

A New-Generation Class Of Parallel Architectures And Their Performance Evaluation, Qian Wang May 1999

A New-Generation Class Of Parallel Architectures And Their Performance Evaluation, Qian Wang

Dissertations

The development of computers with hundreds or thousands of processors and capability for very high performance is absolutely essential for many computation problems, such as weather modeling, fluid dynamics, and aerodynamics. Several interconnection networks have been proposed for parallel computers. Nevertheless, the majority of them are plagued by rather poor topological properties that result in large memory latencies for DSM (Distributed Shared-Memory) computers. On the other hand, scalable networks with very good topological properties are often impossible to build because of their prohibitively high VLSI (e.g., wiring) complexity. Such a network is the generalized hypercube (GH). The GH supports full-connectivity …

Has Technology In The Elementary Classroom Caused Instruction To Improve?, Denise Mcdermott May 1999

Has Technology In The Elementary Classroom Caused Instruction To Improve?, Denise Mcdermott

Theses and Dissertations

This study described and evaluated the extent to which technology has improved instruction, and thus improved student learning, in elementary schools in Deptford Township, a K-12 district. The study included all K-6 grade teachers. A 31-item survey was completed by 85% of elementary school teachers. Percentages of answers were mathematically calculated and lists of software programs and student systems for computer use were compiled. The majority of elementary teachers described their level of expertise regarding technology as "able to manage as long as everything runs correctly". The results reveal a high dissatisfaction with the type and amount of technology training …

An Examination Of The Self-Perceptions Of The Physical Environment And Psychological Health Of Latina Women Living In The St. Columbia Neighborhood Of Newark, New Jersey, Veronica Maria Maya May 1999

An Examination Of The Self-Perceptions Of The Physical Environment And Psychological Health Of Latina Women Living In The St. Columbia Neighborhood Of Newark, New Jersey, Veronica Maria Maya

Theses

A correlation between perceptions of environmental quality and psychological health has been established in a sample of Latina women. Three psychological scales exist to measure psychological constructs such as learned helplessness, hopelessness, and selfesteem. These three scales have been used in conjunction with an environmental survey designed to capture the perceptions of the sample to their physical environment.

The mean of scores for each psychological construct in the Latina sample were compared to the mean of scores for these constructs in independent samples of oncology, hemodialysis, and spinal cord injured patients being treated for depression. This comparison yields the following …

Study Of Reactive Media For Chromium Removal From Groundwater By Permeable Barriers, Hemant S. Desai May 1999

Study Of Reactive Media For Chromium Removal From Groundwater By Permeable Barriers, Hemant S. Desai

Theses

The purpose of the study was to select reduction media for application in permeable barriers for removing chromate ions from groundwater emanating from chromium refining sites in New Jersey. The high pH condition of groundwater in such sites is expected to pose limitations on the use of metallic iron (Fe0) as the sole reductive medium.

Reasonable reduction kinetics was achieved using iron at pH < 9.2. Several pH lowering media were investigated and were found to have either very slow or very fast dissolution kinetics, which rendered them impractical for use in passive permeable barriers. Two other media, namely: pyrite and siderite minerals have shown promising results, but fell short of achieving the required performance. Detailed investigation of interfacial processes in a batch reactor have shown that the addition of a small amount of a neutral salt can significantly improve chromate reduction kinetics, even at high pH conditions around 10.9.

The formation of passivating layers, which can slowdown the reaction significantly, was found to be important at high pH conditions. It is recommended that an injection system be used with the reactive barrier to …

History Of Oxygenated Gasoline Use In New Jersey 1992-1998, Jean Niebuhr Borne May 1999

History Of Oxygenated Gasoline Use In New Jersey 1992-1998, Jean Niebuhr Borne

Theses

New Jersey has been required to use oxygenated gasoline from November 1 to March 30 since 1992 in order to reduce carbon monoxide from vehicles. This requirement was part of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. For the past six winters, New Jersey has utilized gasoline with methyl butyl tertiary ether, MTBE, as the oxygenate. In New Jersey, and in many states across the country, health complaints were reported after oxygenated fuel started flowing from gas pumps.

Oxybusters is a grassroots organization dedicated to the removal of oxygenated gasoline off the market. The group has pressured Governor Whitman to …

In Situ Aortic Root In Vitro Testing Of The Stented And Stenless Porcine Aortic Heart Valves, Sean Parker May 1999

In Situ Aortic Root In Vitro Testing Of The Stented And Stenless Porcine Aortic Heart Valves, Sean Parker

Theses

Background - The stent, Delrin® support frame, for porcine heart valves has been blamed for reduced durability of these valves due to the additional stress caused by the relative stiffness of the stent. There is a tendency among surgeons to do away with the stent in the aortic position and use porcine stentless valves which are sewn directly in the aortic position after removing diseased valve. These stentless valves are extremely difficult to test and no appropriate holder has been designed for this purpose. New approach for in vitro testing of these valves has been developed at Sheihigh, Inc., Millburn …

Development Of A Context-Specific Search Engine, An Executive Information System, And A Novel Www Ready External Cost Model, Amit V. Revankar May 1999

Development Of A Context-Specific Search Engine, An Executive Information System, And A Novel Www Ready External Cost Model, Amit V. Revankar

Theses

NJPIES is associated with Information Ecology and Sustainability, a holistic approach to environmental data collection, compilation, integration and provision that puts people, not technology, at the center of the environmental information world.

The first main goal of this project was to develop an algorithm and associated computer-based tool that could perform a lifecycle cost analysis for a model system. The application developed solved the primary problem associated with the lifecycle cost analysis of a product: it accounted for all costs (e.g., environmental costs such as ecological costs and health costs associated with emissions) of the activity. A lifecycle cost analysis …

Computer Simulation Of Cerebrovascular Responses During Induced Hypotension, John A. Schalago May 1999

Computer Simulation Of Cerebrovascular Responses During Induced Hypotension, John A. Schalago

Theses

The purpose of this project was to develop a computer model of cerebrovascular hemodynamics interacting with a pharmacodynamic drug model to examine the effects of three commonly used anti-hypertensive drugs upon intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow. The model is used to predict cerebrovascular response during the administration of commonly used anti-hypertensive agents.

The mathematical model of intracranial hemodynamics is a seven compartment constant volume system. A series of resistances relate blood and cerebrospinal fluxes to pressure gradients between compartments. Arterial, venous and tissues compliance are included. Autoregulation is modeled by transmural pressure-dependent arterial-arteriolar resistance. The effects of three drugs …

Recasting Cohn's Many Sorted Logic Into A Constrained Logic, Christopher Brendan Koelbl May 1999

Recasting Cohn's Many Sorted Logic Into A Constrained Logic, Christopher Brendan Koelbl

Theses

The use of a many sorted logic for theorem proving carries many advantages over a traditional unsorted logic. By placing restrictions on the search space, a many sorted logic can significantly reduce the amount steps in the resolution process. However, as a logic becomes more efficient, it increases in complexity.

One of these efficient log ics is Cohn's Many Sorted Logic, LLAMA. It uses complex data structures such as the sort lattice and sort arrays to maintain information about the sorts. Recasting LLAMA into Bürckert's constrained logic will keep the functionality of LLAMA while using a format that reduces the …

Graphical User Interface For The Dsp : Using Texas Instruments Tms320c31 And Labview, Tahir Nazir May 1999

Graphical User Interface For The Dsp : Using Texas Instruments Tms320c31 And Labview, Tahir Nazir

Theses

Digital Signal Processors (DSP's) have become very popular due to their ease of operation, economic value, adaptability and availability. However, the development environments for the DSP are still the archaic Assembly and C language programming. It is tedious, error prone and time consuming to develop and use DSP applications using these compared to Graphical User Interface development tools if available. In the modern age programming is very heavily done in object oriented graphical languages like the Visual C++ and Visual Basic. Windows also gives a good graphical user interface.

LAB VIEW with its readily available ensemble of good analysis, programming …

O Come Our Wisdom From On High- An Introduction Into Wisdom Christology, Ralph Shorey May 1999

O Come Our Wisdom From On High- An Introduction Into Wisdom Christology, Ralph Shorey

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The purpose of this paper is not to tackle directly all the varying presuppositions held by Feminists in connection with Sophia Christology. Paul Wenz, in the Thanksgiving, 1994 issue of Concordia Student Journal has written an excellent article concerning this point.' Instead, this paper will deal with the following: (1) The general meaning of "wisdom" as it is commonly understood in Scripture, (2) an analytical study of Proverbs 8:22-35 in order to see how Scripture has appropriated the name of Wisdom to Christ, and (3) a brief survey of Early Church History up to the Nicene Creed of 325 A.D. …
