Literacy, Technology, And Change: The Gates Of Hell, Janice R. Walker Aug 1999

Literacy, Technology, And Change: The Gates Of Hell, Janice R. Walker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I first briefly examine the history of technology as it impacts on literacy practices, and especially the history of resistance to technological developments in the humanities. In so doing, I also briefly examine some of the possible ideological underpinnings of this resistance, including looking at some of the arguments proposed to counter it. More specifically, I consider how literacy practices, pedagogical practices, and assessment and gatekeeping practices in the field of composition studies impact on and are impacted by the intersection of computer technologies and our field. Finally, I offer some suggestions for ways in which our …

An Evaluation Of An Agricultural Innovation: Justification For Participatory Assistance, Robert N. King, Timothy J. Rollins Aug 1999

An Evaluation Of An Agricultural Innovation: Justification For Participatory Assistance, Robert N. King, Timothy J. Rollins

Journal of Extension

This article describes and assesses the adoption of a nitrogen testing innovation as a result of an Extension education program. Focus groups and a mail survey provided feedback concerning factors, variables and technology transfer strategies associated with the adoption of this innovation. Farmers indicated that economic factors and information sources impacted their adoption decisions. Results indicated that a more holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to and understanding of the decision-making processes of farmers may have improved the outcome of the educational program. Adoption of this innovation may have been improved if farmers had participated in the research, development and introduction of this …

Ag Science Fairs: The Next Wave In Agricultural Literacy, Demaris A. Blackburn Aug 1999

Ag Science Fairs: The Next Wave In Agricultural Literacy, Demaris A. Blackburn

Journal of Extension

The majority of the U.S. population can be classified as ignorant about agriculture. Ag Science Fairs are a way to combat agricultural illiteracy. Ag Science Fairs give children the opportunity to learn about agriculture outside of the classroom, while allowing the community to teach what agriculture has to offer. Ag Science Fairs are one-time experiential learning events that show case many aspects of agriculture using specially designed curriculum.

A Mesoamerican System Of Weights And Measures? Did The Ancient Peoples Of Mesoamerica Use A System Of Weights And Scales In Measuring Goods And Their Values?, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Ancient Mesoamericans used some systems of weights and measures; items in the market, though, were usually sold by volume. The Mesoamerican weights and measures may coincide with the weights and measures described in Alma 11 of the Book of Mormon, but more research is necessary in order to make conclusive claims.

B. H. Roberts And Book Of Mormon Scholarship, Davis Bitton Jul 1999

B. H. Roberts And Book Of Mormon Scholarship, Davis Bitton

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Brigham Henry Roberts, a Book of Mormon scholar in the early twentieth century, was a pioneer in his field. He conducted research regarding the culture and the geography of the Book of Mormon peoples in an attempt to determine the setting of the Book of Mormon. His extensive work in this area has significantly influenced the progress of Book of Mormon research. Roberts also enthusiastically defended the book when others criticized it. He was able to do so effectively because of his study of and familiarity with the Book of Mormon. Roberts did, however, have a few limitations, the most …

Two-Metal-Ion Catalysis In Adenylyl Cyclase, John J.G. Tesmer, Roger K. Sunahara, Roger A. Johnson, Gilles Gosselin, Alfred G. Gilman, Stephen R. Sprang Jul 1999

Two-Metal-Ion Catalysis In Adenylyl Cyclase, John J.G. Tesmer, Roger K. Sunahara, Roger A. Johnson, Gilles Gosselin, Alfred G. Gilman, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Adenylyl cyclase (AC) converts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic adenosine monophosphate, a ubiquitous second messenger that regulates many cellular functions. Recent structural studies have revealed much about the structure and function of mammalian AC but have not fully defined its active site or catalytic mechanism. Four crystal structures were determined of the catalytic domains of AC in complex with two different ATP analogs and various divalent metal ions. These structures provide a model for the enzyme- substrate complex and conclusively demonstrate that two metal ions bind in the active site. The similarity of the active site of AC to those …

Deaf Children, Self-Esteem, And Parents' Communication Patterns, Lynn Marie Bloom Jul 1999

Deaf Children, Self-Esteem, And Parents' Communication Patterns, Lynn Marie Bloom

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to analyze the responses from high school students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing regarding self-esteem, and communication methods used in the family. The quantitative design examines how the parents' communication methods affect the Deaf child's level of self-esteem. Several studies have reported there is a relationship between the family's communication method and the deaf child's level of self-esteem. Parents whose sign language skills were more proficient had children whose self-esteem scores were higher than those of parents who were less skilled in sign language. Also, parents have an important role to play in preparing …

"Runaways": Designing An Alternative Game For Teens: Runaways, Marsha Kinder Jul 1999

"Runaways": Designing An Alternative Game For Teens: Runaways, Marsha Kinder

SWITCH

The article reveals how control can mitigate the boredom in traditional linear media consumed in days' past, how new interactive media can grant children more agency, and in turn make them feel more empowered. It discusses how childrens' media culture, specifically the trope of "instantaneous physical transformation,'' encourages viewers to have fluid identities and asks if this power can provide a platform for social change. With the help of the "The Changelings Project," a research initiative at the Annenberg Center for Communication at the University of Southern California, Kinder was able to combine these two ideas of agency and fluid …

The Good Morrow., Jane Varley Jul 1999

The Good Morrow., Jane Varley

Theses and Dissertations

“The Good Morrow” is a collection of original poetry that explores the idea of place. The poetry cites various landscapes across a large map of geography and imagination, beginning with poems, in section one, that make reference to conventional homes we grow up in and often move away from. The second and third sections involve a psychological exploration of home, investigating movement among domestic space, cities, and natural landscapes. The speakers in the poems might be thought of as “sea-discoverers,” as John Donne wrote, who explore the world and in the process make discoveries about the worlds inside themselves. I …

Non-Metal Detection For Supercritical Fluid Extraction Using An Infrared And An Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer., Shijiang Liang Jul 1999

Non-Metal Detection For Supercritical Fluid Extraction Using An Infrared And An Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer., Shijiang Liang

Theses and Dissertations

Soil contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons is a very serious environmental problem. In conventional methods such as Soxhlet and Sonication, toxic halogenated solvents such as Freon-113 or CH3Cl are used for the extraction of these pollutants and GC-FID or GC-MS for detection. This dissertation will focus on both the development of non-toxic alternatives to conventional solvents for the extraction and new detection methods. Method 1. On-line dynamic CO2 SFE-IR spectrometry using a fiber optic filter photometer. The research will involve the construction of an IR cell, CO2 SFE coupling with an IR photometer, determination of detection limit and the determinations of …
