Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1999

Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

L’Education sentimentale may be construed as an historical novel at least insofar as it addresses questions of social change and enduring value as they are related to those of history and individual memory. As in Balzac and later in Proust, what is true for the individual applies to society. There is an especially Flaubertian understanding of movement in society and movement across time that remains tied more to demands of diegetic coherence than to laws of historical necessity, however. Singulative narration as it appears in the novel is a kind of smoke screen hiding a more pervasive iteration whereby the …

Univercity News (1999-09-27) Sep 1999

Univercity News (1999-09-27)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Tissue Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And A Digestive Phospholipase A 3 In The Primary Screwworm, Cochliomyia Hominivorax, A.R. Nor Aliza, R.L. Rana, Steven R. Skoda, Dennis R. Berkebile, David W. Stanley Sep 1999

Tissue Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And A Digestive Phospholipase A 3 In The Primary Screwworm, Cochliomyia Hominivorax, A.R. Nor Aliza, R.L. Rana, Steven R. Skoda, Dennis R. Berkebile, David W. Stanley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

We report on the presence of arachidonic acid in larval and adult tissues of the primary screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax and of the secondary screwworm, C. macellaria. Arachidonic acid is present in the phospholipids of whole animal extracts of both species. This fatty acid appears to be accumulated during the larval stages, because proportions of arachidonic acid were higher in adults than in larvae. These insects probably obtain the arachidonic acid from dietary phospholipids. We also report on a phospholipase A2 activity in midgut preparations from third instars of the primary screwworm. Phospholipase A2 is responsible for hydrolyzing fatty acids …
