Church And State Relations In Seventh Century England: The Making Of A Christian State., Steven William King

When Pope Gregory the Great sent St. Augustine to England in 596, Christianity was formally reintroduced into England after nearly two hundred years of isolation due to the Anglo-Saxon invasions. The success or failure of the mission hinged on the ability of those sent to establish a relationship with the provincial rulers. As Christianity took hold throughout the seventh century, the inchoate relationship between the rulers and Church matured within the nucleus of two different world views. Hedge-To-Arrive Contracts: Jurisdictional Issues Under The Commodity Exchange Act, Jennifer Durham King, James J. Moylan

This article addresses the conflicting judicial and administrative agency interpretations of a recent innovation in agricultural merchandising known as Hedge-to-Arrive ("HTA") contracts. This article examines the first federal district court opinion upholding HTA contracts as forward contracts, exempt from the Commodity Exchange Act ("CEA") and regulation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission ("CFTC"). The article also examines the CFTC's approach to regulating HTA contracts in its administrative forum. The CFTC has taken the position that HTA contracts marketed to the general public are illegal futures contracts. A CFTC Administrative Law Judge recently took the position that HTA contracts are not …

The rise of antiquarianism in late Elizabethan/early Jacobean England posed a threat to the common and traditional notion of continuity through time of British institutions and culture, including the transmission of historical texts. This threat was a major preoccupation for the poet Michael Drayton, and his response to it can be examined in his depictions of bards and druids in Poly Olbion. Conservatives in the historiographical debate put forth these ancient British poet/priests as an explanation for how ancient British history could have been transmitted through the centuries. Analyzes the Halt Phase Strategy/Doctrine currently advocated by the Air Force. As a part of his analysis, the author traces the immediate origins of Report of the Quadrennial Defense Review. Dr. Tilford contends, however, that Halt's real origins are more closely identified with intrinsic Air Force strategic bombing doctrine, and are to be found in strategies associated with atomic and nuclear deterrence and warfighting. Thus, he concludes that Halt is really "new wine in old skins" being presented today more aggressively because of rapid technological advances.

David Montejano and others characterize early Hispanic-Anglo relations as operating under a "peace structure," during which the two groups developed strong alliances. However, they suggest that after 1848, "conflict and distrust" replaced it. These studies rely on anecdotal evidence. To date, no one has sought to verify them using actual patterns of social interaction.

This study addresses intermarriage between Hispanic, white non-Hispanic, Black and mixed heritage individuals in Hidalgo County. The quantitative data shows that the demographic characteristics of the area played a major role in defining the patterns of intermarriage. The hypothesis tested in this thesis was whether there has been an evident evolution in the democratic thought of those engaged in China's Democracy Movement in the post-Mao era. The activists of the Democracy Movement of 1978-79, following a long-standing tradition of remonstrance, were among those substantially influenced by the events of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. The activists initiated big character posters on Democracy Walls throughout China--but among the most influential was Beijing's. The convoy system, no matter how limited, has proven to be the most effective way of defending merchant shipping against attacks by submarines. Yet after the United States entered the Second World War, the United States Navy (USN) did not implement a comprehensive system of convoys for moving shipping along the East Coast of the United States until August 1942. Due to this lack of convoys during the first eight months of 1942, the losses of allied merchant ships to German submarines were among the highest experienced during the Second World War.

This article endeavors to serve as an extension (as well as a confirmation) of my research on the role of warrior clubs during the era of migrations, the so-called Völkerwanderung. In regard to the Völkerwanderung terminology I am relying in this study primarily on the ground-breaking work of the late Hans Georg Wackemagel, whose novel anthropological approach unearthed and analyzed a substantial body of pagan traditions surviving in medieval Helvetia.

The Embodiment Of Responsibility: “Confession” And “Compensation” In Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, Andrew Strathern, Pamela J. Stewart

Pacific Studies

We discuss two contexts of responsibility for action in Mount Hagen, confession and compensation. Verbal confessions of either wrongdoing or resentment against wrongdoing are important signs of the exercise of agency, but if they are not made, it is expected that sickness will result. “Substance” thus takes over where “agency” fails, and the two are intimately linked. Compensation payments can be seen as nonverbal equivalents of confession or the logical result of it, and if they are not paid, sickness or a failure of wounds to heal is thought to be likely as a result. In this Article, cast in the form of a letter to President William Jefferson Clinton, Professor Porter argues for the decolonization of federal Indian control law. After detailing the religious and colonialist roots of early Supreme Court decisions dealing with the Indian nations and giving an overview of the evolution of federal Indian policy, Professor Porter argues for the decolonization of federal Indian control law on several grounds: 1. the world community has rejected colonialism policies; 2. federal Indian control law denies basic human rights of self-determination; 3. colonization has partially succeeded in destroying the Indian nations; and 4. decolonization …
