West German Secondary School Education On The Holocaust, Martin Eric Vann Jan 1998

West German Secondary School Education On The Holocaust, Martin Eric Vann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

After World War II, Germany lay in ruins, both physically and morally. The Allies attempted denazification, but were unable to completely reform the educational system. Cold War exigencies dictated that lessons on the Nazi era, particularly the cruelties of the Holocaust, be soft-pedaled. While some German politicians urged greater openness, collective amnesia reigned for over a decade. Early texts showed Germans as mesmerized by Hitler, who, together with a few henchmen, was responsible for the mass murders. Gradually, as democracy took root in West Germany, educators responded to the changing political culture by teaching more of the true nature of …

A New Options Theory For Risk Multipliers Of Attorney's Fees In Federal Civil Rights Litigation, Peter H. Huang Jan 1998

A New Options Theory For Risk Multipliers Of Attorney's Fees In Federal Civil Rights Litigation, Peter H. Huang

Publications

Given the importance of private enforcement of federal civil rights laws, Congress and the courts have attempted to encourage plaintiffs' attorneys to accept meritorious civil rights cases through fee shifting and risk multipliers. Recently, however, the Supreme Court has essentially prohibited the use of risk multipliers, thus undercompensating attorneys for the risk of losing civil rights actions and discouraging the filing of such cases. In this Article, Professor Huang develops a new options-based theory of calculating attorney's fees. Professor Huang argues that a lawsuit consists of a sequence of options to continue with the case rather than a once-and-for-all irreversible …

Negotiation And Reorganization Of Peer Relationships During Adolescence: The Emergence Of Romantic Relationships And Quality Of Peer Relationships, Melanie Jo Zimmer-Gembeck Jan 1998

Negotiation And Reorganization Of Peer Relationships During Adolescence: The Emergence Of Romantic Relationships And Quality Of Peer Relationships, Melanie Jo Zimmer-Gembeck

Dissertations and Theses

Research suggests that, for adolescent females, the initiation of romantic relationships is a normative developmental task and a task associated with potential difficulties, including physical aggression. Most previous research treats progress in this task as a function of individual characteristics. This study assumes that when girls are negotiating romantic relationships, they have existing intimate friendships with other females, and these friendships are important to how this task is negotiated.

Females who recently graduated from high school provided retrospective and current information on the amount of leisure time spent with members of their social networks, qualities of relationships in later adolescence, …

Grade Retention: A History Of Failure, William A. Owings, Susan Magliaro Jan 1998

Grade Retention: A History Of Failure, William A. Owings, Susan Magliaro

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

Although almost 50 years of research has shown that grade-level retention affords no academic advantages to students, this practice is gaining increasing attention as schools face political pressure to be accountable for student achievement. The negative effect that retention has on children is ignored in favor of an overly simplistic view of it as a panacea for education woes. In an attempt to better meet student needs, educators historically have seen retention as a way to reduce skill variance in the classroom. However, this practice has not achieved its objective. An at-risk population is cognitively and affectively harmed by retention. …

"The Voyage Out": A Search For Interpersonal Relatedness And Self-Definition, Jennifer Starr Busto Jan 1998

"The Voyage Out": A Search For Interpersonal Relatedness And Self-Definition, Jennifer Starr Busto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In her first novel, The Voyage Out, Virginia Woolf captures the complexity of human relationships and the difficulty of establishing meaningful connections with people. Her main character, Rachel Vinrace, struggles with these issues as she embarks on a discovery of self. Rachel's journey begins with a disrupted childhood, moves through her battle to regain a sense of belonging, and ends with her eventual withdrawal from the human struggle, thereby recreating herself and transcending the limitations of society and relationships. Rachel's actions throughout the novel mirror an oscillation between the fundamental concerns of personality development. Her behavior reflects the typical ego …

"None Of Us Are Androgynous": Androgyny In William Faulkner's "The Wild Palms", Teresa Russell Dawsey Jan 1998

"None Of Us Are Androgynous": Androgyny In William Faulkner's "The Wild Palms", Teresa Russell Dawsey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Androgyny in literature is not a new topic. In William Faulkner's The Wild Palms, however, the significance of androgyny as theme has been largely overlooked. Androgyny is defined as the harmonious balance derived from accepting those individual aspects defined culturally and socially as masculine and feminine beyond the physical and biological. In this novel, Harry Wilbourne, a doctor and scientist, denies his androgyny while Charlotte Rittenmeyer, his lover and a sculptor, finds comfort and harmony in both her masculine and feminine traits. Harry faces a gender identity crisis when Charlotte, pregnant, decides to abort their child. Only after Charlotte dies …

Alice Walker: Redefining The Hero, Nicole. Campbell Jan 1998

Alice Walker: Redefining The Hero, Nicole. Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In Meridian, The Temple of My Familiar, and Possessing the Secret of Joy, Alice Walker places women in the traditionally male role of hero. As an artist, her goal is to provide stories with role models who will help women transcend the gender stereotyping inherent in patriarchal cultures and enable them to envision themselves as capable of completing the stages of the hero's journey. The novels are compared to the three stages of the hero's journey as it is defined by Joseph Campbell to demonstrate how the women successfully master the hero pattern. The simple act of replacing the mythical …

American Protestant Fundamentalism, 1875-1940: Its Evolution-Birth, Maturity, Near-Death, And Reincarnation, Alvin John Schilling Jan 1998

American Protestant Fundamentalism, 1875-1940: Its Evolution-Birth, Maturity, Near-Death, And Reincarnation, Alvin John Schilling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

What began as an intra-church religious struggle by conservative evangelicals to defend the inerrancy of the Bible and the establishment of prophetic doctrines, after initial great success, expanded into secular culture and confrontations with liberalism in many of its forms, such as the teaching of evolution in public schools and the use of alcohol in society. Fundamentalists, however, could not compete with the intellectual persuasiveness and political power of either prominent liberal theologians, or the secular advocates of modernism. As an act of survival, fundamentalists terminated their confrontations with secular liberalism and withdrew from mainstream Protestant denominations. They organized strong …

Anthony Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" And Michel Foucault's "Panopticism", Erika Dawn Brown Jan 1998

Anthony Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" And Michel Foucault's "Panopticism", Erika Dawn Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange offers a "disciplinary technology," the "Ludovico Technique," which resembles Michel Foucault's interpretation of Jeremy Bentham's architectural figure, the Panopticon. Burgess's novel functions analogously to Foucault's image of the panopticon by dehumanizing and controlling the criminal, Alex, by omniscient, omnipotent surveillance, and also by disciplining the reader to assimilate an ambiguous vernacular language: the reader is "trained" by panopticonic techniques to read and interpret the novel.

Assessing Organizational Effectiveness: The Impact Of Drug Court Processes On Offender Behavior Change, Scott Robert Senjo Jan 1998

Assessing Organizational Effectiveness: The Impact Of Drug Court Processes On Offender Behavior Change, Scott Robert Senjo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The issue of drugs and crime maintains a high rank among the complexities which confront the American system of criminal justice. The "treatment drug court" represents an innovative response by policymakers to address drug use and its relationship to criminal activity. Treatment drug court is a court-monitored drug treatment program for people arrested for felony use or possession of illegal drugs. Many defendants select the drug court option rather than probation because most drug courts will dismiss the original felony charges upon successful completion of the court's drug treatment program. This dissertation is a focus on the unique "collaborative support" …

Announcement-Specific Stock Market And Currency Market Overreaction And Under-Reaction, Stephen James Larson Jan 1998

Announcement-Specific Stock Market And Currency Market Overreaction And Under-Reaction, Stephen James Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study documents the nature of the underlying information that caused investor overreaction and under-reaction. While research has documented the existence of market overreaction and under-reaction, it has not comprehensively addressed the underlying information releases that caused the extreme price fluctuations. This study controls for the underlying announcements, and finds that the degrees of overreaction and under-reaction vary according to the underlying information releases. A primary contribution of this dissertation is the finding that undefined events are associated with higher degrees of overreaction than defined events. The Wall Street Journal Index was used to determine if each event had an …

Caring Behaviors Of Perioperative Nurses, Russell S. Coogan Jan 1998

Caring Behaviors Of Perioperative Nurses, Russell S. Coogan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this study was to describe the caring behaviors incorporated into the practice of perioperative nursing. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, this study provided 104 perioperative nurse participants who were members of the AORN with the Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI). Data collected in this study supported the use of the CBI as a reliable instrument for measuring caring behaviors as measured by a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of.9486. The top five caring behaviors that emerged were (1) showing respect; (2) treating patient information confidentially; (3) appreciating the patient as a human being; (4) showing concern; (5) and supporting the …

Dynamics Of Attitudes: Individual Beliefs To Cultural Norms, Helen C. Harton Jan 1998

Dynamics Of Attitudes: Individual Beliefs To Cultural Norms, Helen C. Harton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Dynamic social impact theory (DSIT; Latane, 1996a; 1996b), a macro-level theory of social influence, predicts that discussion will lead to a self-organization of public opinion through decreasing minority sizes, increasing spatial similarity, and emerging correlations. The catastrophe theory of attitudes (CTA; Latane & Nowak, 1994), a micro-level theory, suggests that attitudes are a joint function of issue involvement and information favorability. This paper describes the predictions leading from these theories separately and as integrated and meta-analytically combines analyses of almost 500 students discussing social and political issues over a computer network with twenty previous studies testing aspects of CTA. The …

Comparison Of Academic Success Variables Of Black Male High School Graduates With Other Racial And Gender Populations In The Broward County School District, Florida, Melvin D. Gillespie Jan 1998

Comparison Of Academic Success Variables Of Black Male High School Graduates With Other Racial And Gender Populations In The Broward County School District, Florida, Melvin D. Gillespie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Black males in the United States and Florida are falling behind other groups in almost every measurement of academic success. Inadequate preparation in high school often discourages them from seeking postsecondary education, and reduces their chances of obtaining gainful employment. This study compared the variables which can predict academic success (number of college preparation courses, high school GPA, class rank, and standardized test scores) of black males with that of other racial populations and gender. The sample was limited to seniors who graduated in 1994 from the Broward County public schools and attempted the Florida college entry-level placement test. The …

Effects Of Adaptation On The Perception Of Motion: The Influence Of Competing Mechanisms, Jessica K. Espinoza Jan 1998

Effects Of Adaptation On The Perception Of Motion: The Influence Of Competing Mechanisms, Jessica K. Espinoza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The effects of adaptation on motion were investigated using a modified apparent motion display. Unlike the classical apparent motion display, a BRLC (background relative luminance contrast) apparent motion display consists of two visible dots, each of a different luminance, which remain in the same position but exchange luminances on successive frames. This forms a bistable stimulus; stationarity-flicker or motion may be perceived, depending on the value of the BRLC. There was a significant interaction between condition (baseline or adaptation) and BRLC when testing motion perception following adaptation to a moving stimulus, a flickering stimulus and a static stimulus. Additionally, adaptation …

Effects Of Meditation On Global And Factor Scores On The Bsi: A Secondary Analysis, Rebecca Leigh Buti Jan 1998

Effects Of Meditation On Global And Factor Scores On The Bsi: A Secondary Analysis, Rebecca Leigh Buti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study was a secondary analysis or data collected by Freeman, E., Ruppenthal, B., and Flinders, R. entitled "Meditation on a Passage and Repetition of a Mantram to Enhance Self-Care of Persons with HIV Infection" (1992). Selected data were re-analyzed considering the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (Orem, 1995). Self-care consisted of daily repetition of an inspirational passage and mantra, which served as the interventions for the primary study. The primary researchers noted that Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) scores rose significantly after the intervention. Thus, secondary analysis focused on the relationships of the basic conditioning factors (BCF) to the global and …

Effects Of Teaching Mathematics To Learning Style Perceptual Preference On Academic Achievement Of Seventh-Grade Middle School Students, Rosemary Colarulli Jan 1998

Effects Of Teaching Mathematics To Learning Style Perceptual Preference On Academic Achievement Of Seventh-Grade Middle School Students, Rosemary Colarulli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Teaching methods that are effective with some students, fail with other students, because students perceive and process information differently. The personal preference by which one perceives and processes new material is called one's learning style. Using the Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Inventory assessment instrument, the learning style perceptual preference of 262 seventh grade students from a large, urban, middle school in southeast Florida were identified. This research investigated the effects of teaching mathematics to the preferred perceptual preference of these students in terms of academic achievement. Four teachers were trained in the Dunn and Dunn learning style teaching model …

Event Type And Individual Differences In Children's False-Memory Creation, Rhonda Douglas Brown Jan 1998

Event Type And Individual Differences In Children's False-Memory Creation, Rhonda Douglas Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This series of experiments was designed to address two major questions concerning children's false-memory creation: (1) Are events that involve physical harm content more difficult to implant than events that do not involve physical harm content? and (2) Are individuals with particular cognitive and personality attributes more likely to create false-memories than others? In Experiment 1, 27 first-graders were presented with descriptions of two fictitious events (1 physical harm, 1 no physical harm) and two true events (1 physical harm, 1 no physical harm). Furthermore, individual differences in image descriptions, inhibition, verbal intelligence, working memory capacity and teacher ratings of …

Variances In Meta-Analysis, Katherine L B Humphreys Jan 1998

Variances In Meta-Analysis, Katherine L B Humphreys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Meta-analysis is a statistical method of combining many individual analyses. This thesis reviews the need for meta-analysis; the many statistical consideration facing the meta-analyst; and some of Hedges' results concerning the combined estimate of effect size with unequal weights from his 1981 and 1982 papers. Unequal weights used to combine estimates of effect size in meta-analysis are derived using the variances given by the large sample, normal approximation of the distribution of Hedges' unbiased estimates of effect sizes. These variances depend on the effect size and the sample sizes of both experimental and control groups. This creates circular definitions and …

The Application Of Learning Organisation Theory To The Management Of Change : With Reference To The Engineering Sector, Penelope Ann Gardiner

Plymouth Business School Theses

Recent contributions to the literature on organisations have emphasised the need for constant adaptation to keep pace with the accelerating rate of environmental change. The learning organisation is proposed as one of the most effective means of achieving succesful adaptation through a central focus on learning. This thesis examines the development of the .ideas which have led to the concept of the learning organisation and the application of this concept to the management of change. A number of reasons are proposed for the current adoption of learning organisation theory, these include the restructuring and downsizing of organisations, new Human Resource …
